I received an e/mail tonight from an old friend with a link to this

Additionally I found another link to Brookstone. It appears that RCA is redoing the Philco Predicta televisions. Thought it would be a fun addition to a den or guest room. And here I was about ready to get my first flat screen TV for our guest room!

I have this "thing" about the quality of replicas that bugs me...I don't like these TV's; would rather have a vintage Predicta instead.

This right here is basically the same as putting a "plastic" GE washer mechanism into a 1951 GE AW5B6 cabinet, IMHO. YUK!

I thought it was cool looking...

as the page downloaded and I saw the top part. Then I saw the base with those phony chrome embellishments. Yuk! It's not very tasteful at all. Instead of striving to be sleak, it comes off as corny. Its trying too hard to be something that it cannot be IMHO

Don't like it either-Predictas Weren't COLOR were they?thought they were monochrome.the base doesn't look right to me as well-looks rediculous. And the screen is limited to a 10 degree swivel-couldn't the orig Predictas screens be swivelled futher than that? And I miss the tubes-the glow of the tubes in the cabinet added to the fun.

Phooy to Reproductions of any kind

This tv doesn't even come close to looking like a predicta. Philco Predictas were never made in color, they were always B&W televisions. I'm with you Austin, I too cannot stand any sort of reproduction, its the lazy persons way of a having something vintage. There is nothing more satisfying in the entire world than doing a load of laundry in a 45 year old washer that I found and restored, then coming upstairs and watching a vintage tv show on a 50 year old television set that I brought back to life with my own two hands.

Why pay $500 for that RCA when you can get a FULLY RESTORED Philco Princess Predicta for $275 (although auction continues for 7 days...)

And look, the screen is 4 inches bigger!

Predicta repro

Yeah, It's discusting looking. The nerve to pass this thing off as a Predicta. Good news though, faithfull reproductions are made by Telstar electronics. They look just like the real thing! If you don't mind that it is a color tv and has cable, vcr and dvd hookup capability and a higher price tag than the RCA then this is the unit for you. Go to www.predicta.com and marvel over these beauties. We must realize that the original Predictas had their own glitches. They were more form than function and they constantly broke down. Restorers have found solutions to these problems but be careful when investing in one of these things. If you plan on restoring one, you must have some knowledge and know-how of tv electronics.
