I found this unusual food processor at one of the thrift stores I've started frequenting in St-Hyacinthe. I vaguely remember seeing these on the pages of the old Consumers Distributing catalogs; I think it had to be in the mid to late 70s. I know that GE had a more compact model, one that had the low profile with the motor at the rear of the unit like their 60s blenders because I owned one then and still own one now! But this one had to be Canadian General Electric's answer to the Cuisinart. It's a model PR300A and was made in Japan. Can't really figure by who, though...

It kinda looks like a Cuisinart, with the square base and spring-loaded switch. The bilingual controls are kinda neat too.

Shades of 'Versa-Disc'! This model seemed to have a choice of two reversible discs for regular or fine slicing and shredding, thick slicing, and cutting french fries.

The drive post for the disc is a convoluted contraption, though!

And it gets more complicated... I haven't tried it yet, but I am guessing that the solid plate is meant to be used for continuous feeding. Notice the 'drawbridge' to direct the food being sliced or shredded into the processor bowl or an external one. Nice feature, but that cover looks like it's gonna be a pain to clean... Not sure if the bowl would be dishwasher-safe - the low-profile processors were and the bowl does look like genuine GE Lexan. BUT, I've messed up three vintage processor bowls due to dishwasher washing (including my first 'real' 1974 Cuisinart) so I'm reluctant to try. I must do some cooking this week to test-drive it!

Those were sold here as sunbeam. I used mine for years until the bowl cracked and started leaking everywhere. Ours were made here in country.

It's a very versatile machine, but I have to say I love my Magimix even more :)

Think the plastic disc was used as a "slinger" to throw the sliced or grated food out of the chute in the lid to a bowel or pan.It would go under the slicer or shredder blade disc.Neat processor-never seen one like that. Was used to the rear motor BD GE models.

Nice find. Will need to dig out an old CD catalog lost in the mess here and see if it's in there. The hassle with those things to me was all the fiddly bits you have to keep track of that no matter how careful you are one always seems to disappear, like a sock.

What happened to the original Cuisinart bowl?

Paul,

I assume by the original you mean the first one that didn't even have a switch? You turned and locked the cover to start the machine? That was my first one. I have been putting them in the dishwasher since this one and never had an issue with them. They all seem to cloud a bit here and there but it always seemed to be a result of what I was processing with the machine and not how I was cleaning it.

Ralph, that's the bowl I had alright! But it started to leak at what I guessed to be a seam at the base of the bowl. Same darn thing happened to a Moulinex I had, too. I thought I'd melted the seal in both cases. I've got the Cuisinart with the spring-operated cover switch now, but I'm still too chicken to put it in the dishwasher (even the Roto-Rack...LOL)

Interesting..

I never had that issue with mine. I now have an older one with the spring operated lock and I run it through all the time. Top and bottom rack wherever I have room.

Last year I bought one of the newer Cuisinart monster 14 cup machines with the three bowls and I HATE it!!! It's too big (out of the gutter boys) and find it's too much trouble for doing a few things. I have it put away and just use the smaller older one. I will likely sell it and go back to my smaller one permanently. When I am doing a smaller batch of dough for something I don't need all that mess with moving bowls, getting out parts, etc. The smaller one sits on the counter and I'm in and out in no time. I also have one of those little choppers but it's only good for a few cloves of garlic or a small onion or something. I suspect yours will be fine in the dishwasher and a heck of a lot easier to clean than by hand.
