Automatic Washer - The world's coolest Washing Machines, Dryers and Dishwashers

Help Support :

My great-aunt had that machine- here in the USA. It was nearly exactly the same. Brand name was "Comb-O-Matic". Made in Italy. No heater for the wash, 110v of course, and same wattage dry elemeent (Read: slow).

Hers had two vent openings in the rear covered by a rectangular (course) filter, not a standard 4 inch (100 +/- mm) exhaust connection.

FABULOUS CATCH!

Actually, I stand corrected. IIRC,there were two buttons in place of the "D" and "800" buttons."Hot" and "Cold". Both were derpessed for warm. Machine, as all do here, had a hot and cold fill.

When I used this machine, I had inadvertently mixed-up the bleach and softener dispensers (#$^&* PICTOGRAMS!). Needless to say the blech had gone into the load during the last rinse and was not properrly rinsed away/neutralized. I was an itchy mess!

lovely

Hello Rob

That is lovely looking machine, and the levers, i presume drop the under carriage for moving it around a great idea.

Well done

Gary

Ronhic,

The modern ones are just as bad over here. Where do you start with anything from the house of Indesit?

Toggles, This version only has 3 compartments in the dispenser for Prewash, Main wash and softener,
Did your Aunts have 4 compartments or was prewash replaced with a bleach dispenser?

The programming dial must of been linked to the powder drawer differently so the bleach washed into he first rinse I assume?

Robliverpool yes it does do a fab wash. Quite energetic and nice short cycles. The wash heater also gives quite a roar and got the water heated unbelievably quickly.

YOu guys are right about the dryer venting arrangement with the lint filteralthough thankfully the lady who owned this seems to have not used the dryer as the lint filter and vent pipes were totally lint free and very very clean.

The dryer does seem to be a little on the slow side. THe machine does have one fault in that you can open the door anytime you wish in the cycle, it should actually lock but we are not too bothered about it.

May get it fixed if the need arises but it did mean we could see how strong the fan was blowing and how quick it got hot.

Warmed up superbly but the airflow only hits what is passing the dryer opening at the precise point, and its not that strong compared to other washer dryers especially the Hotpoints of the 80's.

Gary yes those are the lowering levers. A very nice touch and they actually work, Made our life a hell of a lot easier.
Another bit of chrome to keep polished though lol.

Fantastic machine, well built and what styling, cant beat white. Nice and squire machine with lots of shiny chrome, much better looking then most modern machines on the market with rounded and slanted fronts.

Seeing that this was 25+ years ago, the memory has faded. I don't recall 4 compartments.

But I want to say that the contents of the bleach dispenser were released into the first rinse. IIRC it was to the far right with the softener dispenser towards the middle. This is probbly why I confused the two.... .the dispemsers were not in "time" order.

Interesting to see in the pictures the two round dryer vent openings (fed by the "rubber" tubes) as well as the rectangular filter, all previouly mentioned.

I have owned one of those machines. They were sold here badged as Indesit and badged as Lemair. Both were called model WD800.

I have also had a couple of South African private imports, badged as Indesit.

They are great machines.

A bit of belt noise is pretty normal. The expanding pulley doesn't fit the belt profile very accurately, and at this age the plastic pulley surface is likely to be a bit worn and grooved. These machines are hard on their belts, so keep a spare belt handy.

Chris.

I dont know much on Colston History!

We are really pleased to be custodians of this machine. Something just that little bit different and in great condition too.

Scrubbed up really well, once we got rid of all the external tobacco/grease staining which had yellowed all the white enamel of the machine. We have still to clean the bodysides, but if you catch a glance at the first picture of the machine with its door open you will see the difference between the bright white front of the machine and the yellowed rim round the door gasket, usually hidden by the door, which retains its 'lovely' yellow hue. We have left it like this on purpose.

Bit of an enquiry now.
Obviously a development of the Colston Commodore, where was this machine made?
States made in Italy (Ariston) on the front, but has the standard Colston ratings plate on the back showing High Wycombe.
Were all Coslton machines (Commodores and Consorts) made in Italy and imported?
Were they manufactured in the UK?
Was the 950XD made in Italy (production exported after the Ariston takeover of Colston)?
Or was it actually made in the UK, but badged as Italian made?

Below is the crossover machine - the dual branded Ariston-Colston 850XD, which our 950XD replaced...

induction motor

for sure this is made-in-italy ... its ratings plate is written in italian.

Find so strange some of these machines were even Indesit badged, cause Merloni (Vittorio/Ariston, not Antonio/Servis) bought Indesit later (in 1985) and in mid 80s here we had the Ariston Margherita series.

Maybe they kept older moulds/design and produced for foreign markets
