I have been sick all week.  I normally hate to get up in the morning, but yesterday I was woken up by the combo shipper!  I pulled myself together and met him outside.  Since I didn't have advance notice, the poor combo is in the garage.  It looks to be in very nice shape.

I will clear out some space in the house and get it inside very soon.  What I am curious about the most is why did Maytag recall them?

Travis, I am happy the combo got "home".   Storming like crazy here, then the cold is coming.

WOW!!

Love that for sure ... I know someone who is gonna be reallllllllyyyyyy jealous of that, but happy for you too!

Congratulations On Your NEW MT Combo

MT did not exactly recall these machines, they offered customers a pair of TOL MTs if they had too many service problems or were otherwise very disappointed with their MT Combo, during the first 10 years they had it. I suspect that the majority of MTCs were returned and destroyed by MT dealers, but do keep in mind that not very many MTCs were sold in the first place, so they are understandably rare to begin with.

Every MT appliance Maytag ever introduced had LOTS OF PROBLEMS when first introduced [ from 1949-2006 ], to MTs credit they systematically would work through the problems and eventually end up with a fairly decent appliance, sales of the Combo were so disappointing that almost NO IMPROVEMENTS were ever implemented and MT pulled the plug after about six years of production.

Thanks to Greg N, I now have two MTCs in our collection, and the only one known in color, a lovely Yellow Y340W, hope you get your combo going Travis.

John thanks...

I have followed along over the years. I thought you had the combo that Ben had gotten. I had no idea that Greg had passed that gourgeous yellow combo to you. I'll have plenty of questions once it comes inside.

Finally inside

I am much happier now. The boot seems to be fine. I even found that the feet are on the machine, just screwed in all the way. I'll try and open it up this weekend.

Thanks to Ben for a pdf of the manual. I made a bound copy.

CONGRATULATIONS!!!

very nice!!! it looks so grand & BEAUTIFUL!!!

i have a couple of questions for you;
1. does the control panel light up??
2. does the control panel have the same shape as the "new generation" maytag washers?? it looks like the chrome trimming has the same "kick-out" at the bottom of the control panel as the "new generation" maytags??
3. is that "wood grain" on the lower 1/3 of the control panel??

very interesting....

:o)

Christina,

Yes, the control panel lights up.  The buttons for the light are on the top rear of the console.  The console has the same shape as the newer Maytags.  Yes. that's fake wood grain.  I tend to shudder at plastic wood grain, but am making an exception this time.

Best of luck with fixing her up!

Personally, I'm curious as to why full-size combos never became popular here in the U.S. From what I understand the main reasons were poor reliability and long drying times caused by slow spin seeds. Did I read/hear 200 r.p.m. somewhere, at a wash-in maybe?

If so, why were those issues never addressed either before or after introduction to the public?

Why Full Sized Combos Never Becamr Pouplar In The US.

Great question Jim, but actually we only had Full Sized combos in the US, LOL, but you are correct as they never obtained more than 3-6% of the market at their peak sales period around the late 50s.

There are many many reasons why they did not succeed even though the concept is completely sound. When we have another big washer convention, I will [ hopefully with the help of Tom and others ] give a talk about the rise and fall of combos in the US market, but is much too long a topic to cover here.

In the case of MTs Combo, it just did not sell well so MT did not invest the usual money and effort that MT invested in everything they ever built to improve the reliability and pulled the plug at about the same time they switched over the the much improved 06 series of washers and dryers, MT also killed off the cool water dryers about the same time.

The MT combo actually did work pretty well and like MTs TL washers more economical to operate than many other brands of combos, this combo spun at 300 RPMs, but also like their TL washers it was not as good at cleaning as several other brands of combos.

I had a 1965 MT Combo in about 1975 in my home for a couple of years and used it quite a bit and it worked pretty well [ not as well as the 1966 29" LKM combo that I have had in my laundry room for over 35 years however ], stupidly I got tired of problems with the MT and recycled it. I never realized that I would be collecting appliances to the degree that I am now and wished I had kept the MT Combo that I had.

Cool. I'd enjoy hearing about that.

300rpm seems awfully low. Wouldn't that have made for long drying times? TL's of that time spun at about 500rpm, no?

Is there a website that gives an "Intro 101" to combos of that period? That way I could avoid boring people with such basic questions, lol.

Jim

Partially naked combo

I know have a better understanding of the poor engineering for service. I only removed the rear covers. I assume if I remove the front lower cover and the top, I will gain access to more.

This little combo got some use. The base plate is brown with dried oil residue. I guess I need to read the service manual and learn what I am looking at.

The good news is that no critters have lived in there.
