Anyone Checked Their eBay and PayPal Accounts Lately?

There is a whole lot of changes happening.

Many items will now require an product identifier code.

Ebay and Paypal have updated their TOS agreements in light of their soon to be separate companies (again). One or both will now require a valid telephone number and you *MUST* agree to receiving telephone messages of any or sundry. Should you choose to opt out, fine just close your account.

Great that I just signed up for nomorobo.com! If eBay continues to make PayPal a required payment service in order to list on eBay, I'll have to accept since we depend on eBay sales where they're a global option with a low commission percentage. Meanwhile, I'll research other options.

Looks like my eBay-foraging days are over--wound down the PayPal account tonight.  So sad that companies demonstrate this parabolic graph that leads from inception, to awesomeness, to inevitable evil.  Sigh.

Funnily enough, I never altered the phone number on PayPal when we moved from our old house... So if they try ringing anyone, the number is defunct anyway. LOL

Otherwise, I'll try blocking the numbers.

Good to see though they decided to take the higher moral ground in the end.

I scanned around the PayPal site, looking for a screen that allows you to opt-out of receiving this crap. Best I could find is a link to their page for general contact to PayPal, by email or phone. So, I sent them an email. There seems to be no check-the-box way to opt-out.

I also changed my phone number to a fictitious number.

Another incredible thing--on your PayPal accounts page, there is actually a request to enter your Social Security number! Who in their right mind would do that?

Rite Aid Drugstore Discount Card

So I went to use my discount card at the Rite Aid and was told it was being replaced by something called Plenti. I got the discount, but Plenti sent me an email to finish my registration. It is for many different stores, Macy's included (which shows how low Macy's has sunk) and they want all of this information including your birthday. That is when I stopped. They have name, address, phone number, email and they want your birthday. With the way stuff is getting hacked, I decided not to play. Quite frankly, I am not interested in their announced plans to send promotional materials either.

99% of the time I use my Paypal account for ebay and I don't purchase stuff there all that much. I hadnt received any emails from Paypal informing me of the change. I wouldn't have known this was taking place if I hadn't read it here.

While I hate (HATE!!) soliciting phone calls, somehow the specter of maybe receiving such a call wouldn't make me drop either eBay or PayPal.

My experience with both has been as good as most any other Internet experience over 15 years now.

I do wish I could get rid of the 2 to 5 calls I receive EVERY day at work from "Google" trying to update my business listing. It would be grand if I could do that!!

<span style="font-family: verdana,geneva;">PayPal and eBay - I buy and sell alot on eBay.  Unfortunately, so many sellers only accept PayPal as their payment.  I will be eager to see if/how that changes.  I have used both for years and never really had an issue.  As a matter of fact my PayPal Debit Card was stolen/lost one time.  They charged $600 before I realized it was gone.  PayPal refunded it immediately and said they would review what happened.  A couple days later they sent me a note saying I would not be responsible for the charge and it was permanently removed from my account.</span>

When I first saw Launderess initial post, I went directly to paypal to close my account.   One thing I noticed is they had my cell phone number (listed as home) and I don't remember giving them my number.   I also noticed they have a spot one can add there social security number, WTF?!?!?!   I know there are a lot of people out there who don't know any better, but I protect my SSN as if my life depends on it!   Granted my "quality of life" does, if it gets into the wrong hands (but that's another thread).

 

I followed the links within the PP webpage and clicked "close account".   There was some sort of problem as the little "wheel" kept spinning and spinning.  After 30 seconds I was bounced back to my account page.  Hmmm....   I'll have to try it again.

 

I have never really liked paypal, especially how the were tied directly to ebay and took there cut twice for each transaction.  Once with their fees for a sale on ebay, then the transaction fee for moving the $$$ via paypal.   I flat out REFUSED to give them my bank account info... but eventually (somewhat) gave in and linked a credit card to the account.  

 

Yes paypal is very convenient, but I will be happy as soon as I'm rid of it.

Unfortunately, the calls for this come from many different numbers; sort of like a subcontracting operation. So, if you do successfully block one number, that in no way prevents future calls.

Apparently, the federal and state do-no-call lists are useless.

SSN# Became Mandatory

Well pretty much so after Congress passed laws to "crack down" on unreported income.

All providers of merchant type credit card accounts and similar services are required to report transactions to the IRS. Cannot recall the trigger amount but you are safe on say PayPal if you remain below a certain amount per year/month. You can look it up on their website.

The same legislation greatly expanded the dreaded 1099 form so now almost everyone who is self-employed/contractor or whatever is getting one.

Consider me the odd man out, but this seems very much a 3rd World problem. Don't want to give them your phone number? Just use a fake or an old number like I've been doing the last several years. PayPal can be handy with eBay but I find it much more useful for wheeling and dealing in the hobby when the days lost sending a check and waiting for the other party to verify it can make the difference between scoring a deal or missing out.

While there are lots of PayPal scams I'd imagine the odds of simply using Google search would expose one to greater dangers and then there are those credit card breaches that seem to be even more common.

The Phone Number, they want...

Is for your protection, not their benefit.

When someone logs in from a unfamiliar location, and triggers a suspicious activity report, eBay & PayPal both will call you and ask for a 6 Digit code, to continue making changes or listing a auction on your account.

Something, most criminals would have a very hard time, obtaining, hence preventing fraud.

<span style="text-decoration: underline;">Citi Bank & Chase, both now ask for a one-time security code, when suspicious activity is detected.</span> Bank of America is also in the process of revising policy's & procedures to protect their customers.

The SSN

Is NOT mandatory. However, once you reach $20,000+ in eBay or PayPal powered transactions, you will be asked for additional information, or you account will be Frozen, and rightfully so. 

 

I have nothing to hide. And, most people shouldn't have a problem with this. It's to help prevent the funding of terrorist cells, like ISIS & Al-Queda. The IRS only receives a 1099 (report of transactions) when you reach $20,001 in PayPal Transactions. And most of the time, the information is not even reviewed over. 

 

I know people who have sold over $40,000+ and haven't bothered to file it on their taxes. And... not a single word has ever been said to them,  shockingly. 

 

And No. I do not condone or encourage Tax Fraud. It's my personal believe that anyone who does, belongs in a Federal Prison. Simple as that. If your a Tax Cheat, you do belong in Prison.
