Anyone Checked Their eBay and PayPal Accounts Lately?

The SSN

Is NOT mandatory. However, once you reach $20,000+ in eBay or PayPal powered transactions, you will be asked for additional information, or you account will be Frozen, and rightfully so.

I have nothing to hide. And, most people shouldn't have a problem with this. It's to help prevent the funding of terrorist cells, like ISIS & Al-Queda. The IRS only receives a 1099 (report of transactions) when you reach $20,001 in PayPal Transactions. And most of the time, the information is not even reviewed over.

I know people who have sold over $40,000+ and haven't bothered to file it on their taxes. And... not a single word has ever been said to them,  shockingly.

And No. I do not condone or encourage Tax Fraud. It's my personal believe that anyone who does, belongs in a Federal Prison. Simple as that. If your a Tax Cheat, you do belong in Prison.

For what it's worth.....

Chase & JP-Morgan, requires it's banking clients, to keep up to date contact information on file at all times, to receive alerts & important communications regarding accounts.

If you don't and your account is compromised, the Bank at it's sole discretion can hold the customer liable for fraudulent activity on the account.

Interesting, isn't it?

WOW! I've managed to miss ALL of this! Actually, it's not really a surprise (but that's another thread).

Several months ago I signed up for True Caller (it got good reviews compared to its competition). When you get a call, True Caller flashes whatever name (or non-name) the number is listed as. They claim to have access to ALL publicly listed numbers in the U.S. That seems to be a bit of exaggeration, but True Caller identifies far more numbers than my phone service's caller ID. You then have the option to block or block and report as spam the number so you don't get any more calls. There are other options I haven't explored yet.

On the other side of the pond

We have not had quite the same issue however, I was somewhat perturbed by something else they sneaked through.

From time to time I ship vacuums to a collector in Canada and he pays me for shipping by paypal. As noted above PP takes a cut when you transfer funds back to your bank account. This is normally no big deal as I buy stuff quite regularly on ebay and usually try to time a specific large purchase with the receipt of funds so that they go out pretty much as soon as they go in and I don't need to transfer funds back to my account.

Recently I received quite a large payment from my friend and was merrily buying away on ebay on the expectation of using up these funds. Recently PP changed from immediately taking the money from your account when you hit the "Confirm" button to several days later. What I did not realise for a few days is that, upon receiving emails saying that my payment had been scheduled that, unless you change from the default when making the transaction, they still charge your bank account rather than using the funds already in your PP account first, and then charging your account the balance if there were not funds in the PP account to cover the deal.

So they get the benefit of funds on their account for longer. I don't doubt that this was notified at some point during a change to the terms and conditions of the account, but really, how often do we read those? And I am sure many people do even understand the legal jargon sometimes used.

More Fresh Hell

Apparently personal PayPal accounts can no longer accept credit card payments.

Sold a few things on eBay and when buyer paid via credit card got this message:

"You have received a pending credit card payment. However, to reduce credit card processing costs for accounts that do not pay fees, the ability to receive credit card payments is limited to Premier and Business accounts.

If you upgrade to a Premier or Business account, all of your pending credit card payments will be completed. With your upgraded account, you will receive a range of premium features, including the ability to accept unlimited credit card payments. You must pay fees for accepting money with a Premeir or Business account. The fees on incoming payments are low -- just 2.9% + $0.30 USD to receive payments. For more details, go to:
http://www.paypal.com/us/cgi-bin/?cmd=_display-fees-outside

If you would like to keep your Personal account, you may log in and deny this payment. Personal accounts may still accept payments funded with a bank account or PayPal balance at no charge."

How long as this been going on?

How long as this been going on?

IIRC maybe 7-8 years or more. I think they used to limit it to something like $500 a month at one point, then stopped allowing them completely.

Received this message from PayPal

So guess they did walk things back a bit:

"We value our relationship with you and work hard to communicate clearly. Recently, however, we did not live up to our own standards.

Earlier this year, we sent you an email about updates that we planned to make to our User Agreement on July 1, 2015. The User Agreement is a document we share to help you understand your relationship with PayPal and the obligations we both have.

Unfortunately, some of the language in this update caused confusion and concern with some of our customers about how we may contact you.

To clear up any confusion, we have modified the terms of Section 1.10 of our User Agreement. The new language is intended to make it clear that PayPal primarily uses autodialed or prerecorded calls and texts to:

* Help detect, investigate and protect our customers from fraud
* Provide notices to our customers regarding their accounts or account activity
* Collect a debt owed to us

In addition, the new Section 1.10(a) and 1.10(b) makes it clear that:

* We will not use autodialed or prerecorded calls or texts to contact our customers for marketing purposes without prior express written consent.
* Customers can continue to enjoy our products and services without needing to consent to receive autodialed or prerecorded calls or texts.
* We respect our customers' communications preferences and recognize that their consent is required for certain autodialed and prerecorded calls and texts. Customers may revoke consent to receive these communications by contacting PayPal customer support and informing us of their preferences.

If you are interested, you can read this updated section of the User Agreement below and by clicking on the links at the bottom of this message.

We apologize for any confusion we may have caused. Should you have any additional questions, please don't hesitate to reach out to our customer service team.

Sincerely,

Louise Pentland
Senior Vice President, General Counsel and Company Secretary PayPal

Here is the new language of Section 1.10(a) and 1.10(b) in our User Agreement:

1.10(a) Contacting You. In order to contact you more efficiently, we may at times contact you using autodialed or prerecorded message calls or text messages at the telephone number(s) you have provided us. We may place such calls or texts to (i) provide notices regarding your Account or Account activity, (ii) investigate or prevent fraud, or (iii) collect a debt owed to us. You agree that we and our service providers may contact you using autodialed or prerecorded message calls and text messages to carry out the purposes we have identified above. We may share your phone number(s) with service providers with whom we contract to assist us in pursuing these interests, but will not share your phone number(s) with third parties for their own purposes without your consent. Standard telephone minute and text charges may apply. We and our service providers will not use autodialed or prerecorded message calls or texts to contact you for marketing purposes at the telephone number(s) you designate unless we receive your prior express written consent.

1.10(b) Your Choices. You do not have to consent to receive autodialed or prerecorded message calls or texts in order to use and enjoy PayPal's products and services. Where PayPal is required to obtain your consent for such communications, you may choose to revoke your consent by contacting customer support at 1-844-629-9108 and informing us of your preferences.

You also can review the new Section 1.10(a) and 1.10(b) in our User Agreement
