Unfortunately, there are many rural areas that are not served by DSL, etc. and their only choice is to use dial-up.
My mother still has a landline, via fiber optic. The independent teleco in her town sells Internet service via fiber optic, which they're expanding into limited areas of my town (an adjacent county). What was the cable TV service (and a cable-based ISP) in the surrounding counties eliminated cable/coax-based TV service in 2023, now offers only a streaming package. There are also wireless ISP choices, including the electric cooperatives (line-of-site to their towers) and cell providers.I know. Our landlines are gone anyway. ISP providers are cable tv companies.
