Again, people....

I happen to be a renter.

Some of us cook, some of us even give dinner parties.

Not all of us trash our apartments.

I don't call my landlord about really small stuff like fluorescent tubes, or loose screws in a hinge....

I do not, have never expected TOL appliances, far from it. However some of us know decent appliances.

Some of you have sounded almost adversarial here in this thread.

I lived under the landlord, who was an old man. He was gettingn "forgetful". One day it was raining out of the bathroom lighting fixture that was in the middle of the ceiling. I rang the ladlord's bell. He was most appreciative that I notified him right quick.

He came down to see the damage. Didn't day "BOO" about the "illegal" washer, dryer and DW. He actually said: "Wow, it's so clan and beautiful." He sent his family over to see the ceiling fans and decor.

Of course, I said I'd paint the mess myself. I didn't call the landlord EVER under ordinary circumstances.

Tenants like us Lawrence are very much appreciated. But bad ones are BAD!
 
I bought a Magic Chef

stainless steel gas stove around 2000, that was really made and designed by Maytag, not a Maytag-badged Amana,and it is a DREAM. But it cost close to $900, and obviously wasn't a stove for a rental unit. If I ever sell this house, the stove is coming with me.

Don't know about Magic Chefs today in the rental apartment price range, but I suspect they'd be better than the Hotpoint.

I recently cooked dinner on a friend's bottom-of-the-line Hotpoint gas stove, and it was a piece of shit. Especially the oven. The Maytag/Magic Chef oven floors have deflectors that send the heat up the side walls of the oven, where it convects back down off the oven roof. It bakes softly, evenly and beautifully. Other brands of gas ovens simply have open vents in the sides of the oven floor without any deflectors, so the heat isn't as even, and anything around the open vents overcooks.

Just my 2 cents.
 
I rent out the condo I used to live in....

I replaced all the 70's gold appliances that were originally in the unit with new GE's when I moved out. I'm now on my 2nd tenant, and still no complaints whatsoever. The place still looks as nice as it did when I left it. I've had gentle caring tenants, I suppose. Then again, it's a nice condo, in a very upscale hi rise. They pay quite a lot to live there. And maybe I'm cautious, I hold 2 months rent in addition to the deposit. I've never had a phone call about a problem, nor has anyone left a mess.
 
If you pay

If you pay alot for a rental you will care for it 98% of the time..But if it's a company paid for rental, it's another story..
 
All of my landlords have adored me (save one horrible Brooklyn slumlord, who makes the Village Voice's annual slumlord list year after year)....

My home and furnishings may be humble, but I love them.

There is order, and everything is clean and cared for.

And I've never had the five-oh darkening my doorstep....

THAT'S what a landlord worries about. Their building, turning into a house full of savages.
 
Perhaps a "Bad tenant?

Based on rent not paid, not necessarily on houskeeping ability. Super made a colleciton attempt while I gained access.

The three things that bother me about this picture:

Grime on "clean" corning Ware dish in cup-board.
Flammables on a gas sotove that has pilot-lights
"Clean" water surrounded by dirty "dishes"

The upper shot was a young guy.
This lower shot was the place of an older man who could barely walk.

AT least me doesn't see ciggerette any place..But then again..

Bless the old man... AT least he's trying to keep the place clean and nice...

My best friend is like the young man above..He couldn't wasah a dish if he tried... I guess thats why he has me to make sure if he house sits that the dishes get done and the place stays clean.. Fourtunatly, we both house sit one lady and her place aint very clean in the first place... I actually come over and clean and she's very happy to know that her house will be cleaner than when she left...

But what gets me is that boy too damnd lazy to throw the empty bottles away???? How much effort does it take to toss them in a plastic bag and throw them away wherever you enw yorkers throw trash (in the hall chute or in the hudson river is what some one told me)

Honestly it takes effort to be that dirty. One wet paper-towel over the stove and it would get rid of that dust that has becme mud.

This guy is the type that has an electric air-cleaner in the hopes of masking filth.

Remeber I mentioned a morbid fear of water and lowering oneself to clean something? VOILA!
 
Thats how the yocals here would spell that... I have seen it spelled wrong (like that) sooo often... It's too funny!

BTW, I am still chuckling...That was good!
 
OH, HOW REVOLTING....a hipster's kitchen..."vitamin water" and Palmolive Antibacterial...if an original thought popped into his mind, it would have to leave the neighborhood, lest it die of its own common loneliness....

In other words, that boy needs a good paddling....
 
My only suggestion for gentleman number two is that there's nothing like an old toothbrush (reserved specifically for this purpose) and a few good hits of Dawn Power Dissolver to work wonders on the oven trim, knobs, etc.

I'd also recommend a hanging dish rack over the sink to facilitate use of the sink's limited space.

Otherwise, good show (this is how normal human beings USED to live...)

Will send under separate cover a pic of his bed. I believe he is already getting plenty of that.

The bed looked like some kind of traction device or adult toy. It was not pretty in there.
 
On HGTV, I saw a number of italian apartments in this one segment/show that was focused on that country, where there is a cabinet over the sink that has a dish-rack (open wire-grid) bottom.

Wet and washed dishes are put in that. The doors are closed and the dishes drain into the sink and air-dry. FABULOUS, practical, not an eye-sore!
 
I saw those dish racks when we where buying our cabniets...If we didn't have a window (which i wanted to elimiate, but no one ever removed, insted they just replaced it)..I was going to get one..Although it didn't have doors
 
Not seeing the dirt....

Oh, I know....my grandmother of blessed memory and now my mother would be horrified to know they missed a spot, but they did, and do, which is why my self-appointed job is to quietly re-clean it the minute they step out of the room...

That's why when I used to clean for older folks, it was harder, because they were around, and because they're like, "but I already cleaned that!", and it's important to spare their feelings....God knows, most of their kids don't care...

Come to think of it, a real estate appraiser must see a lot of interesting "props", especially because they frequently belong to those who an everyday person wouldn't associate with the scene...
 
I try to get mom to put as much as possible through the DW to de-grease the item. She means well but is starting to miss more than a few spots.......

Of course now that her hands have pain she is willing to do just that.
 
I know

I know from selling houses on a part time basis, i have seen some weird things:

There was a nice house in the Biltmore Forest area that was listed around the $600K mark... The parents where out of town and we scheduled a showing the following morning (Sunday) a showing at 10:30 am... The kids where dead asleep (all 50 of them) and there where beer cans, ciggerettes and every thing else imanginable there... The clients walked around (and over) everything and everyone... The people who where looking at it where just as shocked as I.....The kids never knew we had come and gone... I did call and tell the realtor what had happened but who knows if she told the parents

I have seen alot of dirty houses, esp. cloths all over (how would ones undergarments wind up in the kitchen or living room/family room?), dishes un washed, dog poo every wear, houses that reak of pot, one of my co workers found a meth lab a few months ago, Clients of my gramps found a blow up doll and toys in an attic they bough, i was showing an apartment once and the people where still naked in bed asleep (again never knew that we where there)...

But most of the time, people keep there places up and nice enough to show at least... Unless its a forclosure or death or something like that... Than thats another story

At one time when I was selling a home during a transfer to another location-I worked the mid shift then-so my home could only be "shown" while I was asleep.the Realter agent made up a little sign for me to hang on my bedroom door while I was sleeping.That worked out well.whenever she showed the house-she left a card in the kitchen-She also asked the cleints to be quiet-and this worked-I could sleep and the home was sold.I managed to keep it clean enough at that time.Laundry put away-dirty dishes put away-etc.No-didn't leave any blow up dolls,dog poo,etc.I wonder if the clients liked my small vacuum cleaner-appliance collection?
 
Probably got quite a conversation going...

I find it rather amusing that some people prefer not to clean up there mess and rather leave it behind..
