With laundry, I generally aim at 3 rinses, 4 for big loads of towels and bedding.
Now, with the Bauknecht (Whirlpool), I always have to hit the extra rinse button. If it for some reason decides to cut washing time, it only carrys out 2 rinses. Which, really, just isn't enough with low water levels. With extra rinse I get 4 high rinses on a full load of cottons on Cottons 40°, and 4 mid level rinses on Cottons 60°.
The AEG defaults to 3 rinses with any load bigger then half full. However, if I load to max capacity or wash bedding, I hit extra rinse. This however adds 2 rinses. But given that it leaves out the spin between main wash and 1st rinse then (and its rinsing system of ultra low level with really good spins), I get 4ish rinses then.
On short and Easy Care cycles, extra rinse is default for me.
But, I probably would be rinsing less if water wasn't that absurdley hard around here. I need about 100-120ml of detergent for 4 pairs of jeans and some other items to get decent jobs done. But thats with 42gpg\°dH water hardness.
With dishwashers: I find 1 interim rinse (so 2 rinses total) for daily loads plenty enough. I wouldn't like less, but except for special occasions, more is just not needed in my view. I mean, the water exchange rate on dishes is probably north of 90% in a typical DW, given only a fine film will stay on the dishes between rinses and cup bottoms won't hold an ocean either.
