I am deeply offended by what that disgraced impeached former judge & all around scumbag Alcee Hastings said.

"If Sarah Palin isn’t enough of a reason for you to get over whatever your problem is with Barack Obama, then you damn well had better pay attention,” Rep. Alcee Hastings of Florida said at a panel about the shared agenda of Jewish and African-American Democrats Wednesday. Hastings, who is African-American, was explaining what he intended to tell his Jewish constituents about the presidential race. “Anybody toting guns and stripping moose don’t care too much about what they do with Jews and blacks. So, you just think this through.”

So a hunter and legal gun owner will kill & gut blacks & Jews? Imagine if a white Republican politician would have said this. There would be hell to pay. They would have to resign immediately in disgrace. It doesn't matter to me if he was a dem or rep, that is just plain and simple arrogant & offensive. I am all for free speech and all, so he can say anything he wants. It doesn't mean we have to tolerate it. He's such a neat and upstanding guy.

I seem to recall . . .

that Representative Hastings has a history of making comments of questionable merit, and this is surely one of them. He may be an adequate politician in some respects - I just don't know enough to make a judgement - but this comment was unnecessarily devisive. I find many reasons to dislike the thought of Gov. Palin as Vice President, including a colossal lack of experience and her history of supporting large earmarks for her state, but her hunting prowess isn't one of them.

It's unfortunate that Hasting's remarks are now being used as some sort of "proof" of discrimination against white Republicans. Making ugly and devisive remarks isn't good, and neither is claiming victimhood. Politicians say all sorts of stupid things, and that's not restricted to either party or any one race.

As a librarian, I want to make sure the facts are they stand before commenting. They are. I found this on the web.

Although I am tending to stay away from politics on the AW website, but I need chime in here. As a proud American and an equally proud card-carrying member of the NRA, I deeply object to this statement. How DARE anyone make such a statement. Is this not different than saying all <of an ethnic race or population, etc.> are <the ones who will commit crimes, are lazy, etc.> That type of comment is unacceptable, but the statement Rep. Hastings said ... is?

As Runematic said, to which I whole heatedly agree with, "It doesn't matter to me if he was a dem or rep"

deleted text.

Sorry, I used angle brackets and that info got deleted. Here is what I said originally:

Is this not different than saying all [people of an ethnic group, race or population] are [thieves, lazy, committers of a certain crime]. That type of comment is unacceptable, but the statement Rep. Hastings said ... is?

there is no question...

that those on the left seriously discriminate against the perceived folks on the right. Namely, if you are caucasian, male, and a firearms owner, you are instantly suspect.

And the democrats wonder why they have trouble attracting the votes of white men.

Ironically enough, the "D" party really DOES have more to offer to the middle class than the "R" party - but unfortunately, they have allowed their party to be co-opted by the looney lefty fringe. They also work continuously to tell people they are disenfranchised and powerless - and to "trust them with everything."

Ha.

I trust the left only SLIGHTLY less than I trust the right.

As one of my favorite authors wrote, decades ago: "The greatest guilt today is that of people who accept collectivism by moral default; the people who seek protection from the necessity of taking a stand, by refusing to admit to themselves the nature of that which they are accepting; the people who support plans specifically designed to achieve serfdom, but hide behind the empty assertion that they are lovers of freedom, with no concrete meaning attached to the word; the people who believe that the content of ideas need not be examined, that principles need not be defined, and that facts can be eliminated by keeping one's eyes shut. They expect, when they find themselves in a world of bloody ruins and concentration camps, to escape moral responsibility by wailing: ``But I didn't mean this!'' "

Note that by 'collectivism' I don't mean 'the democratic party' - the nationalization of the US economy that has been happening in recent weeks is a (supposedly) rightist thing. BOTH parties are enemies of freedom and liberty. As I have said in this forum before, the words differ - the right may call them 'camps' and the left 'special resettlement zones' - but they amount to the same thing.

It is, but...

It is, but this was actually in the introduction to Anthem, in some (30 year?) memorial re-issue.

Now, if you want to see the current economic times and political times, read Atlas Shrugged.

those on the left seriously discriminate

OK, I'm white, male, and a gun owner, and I don't feel in the least bit discriminated against on the basis of those attributes.

Now, my bad manners or my acid tongue might elicit some opposition, but that can't be helped.

Lately I have been quiet on the political forums-but at this point as a gunowner will speak up-You need to think twice before voting for Obama and his democaratic freinds--They are a SERIOUS threat to YOUR Constitutional right to Keep firearms. At this point have NO intentions on voting for him.I am going for the other guy. Some of things Obama has said or LIED about turns me off on him.On the radio the other day a gun owning voter asked him about "taking HER" guns away-he would not give her a pat answer-don't trust someone that "sugercoats" everything as Obama does. Also I would urge any Applianceville gunowner members to join the National Rifle Association-they try to defend your gun rights like a pit bull. Please see my link for further details on Obamas "Change" for gunowners and potential gunowners.I am a proud member of NRA.

Hastings comment is really pretty stupid considering how many Jewish Americans own guns (myself included) and I would think most Blacks do as well------especially in a city I am most familiar with------ Atlanta.

It is interesting to hear the discussion about which party appears to be the biggest threat to our Constitutional rights. So far the Republican's "ring the bell" for destroying it. The very party that boasted about how they would stay out of our lives,(and don't forget "fiscal responsibility") has in fact, invaded our privacy and civil rights, in unprecidented ways.
Bubba sure got hoodwinked by the Bush administration. No thanks----I would'nt trust 'em if they were the last party left in this country to vote for.

I also tend to agree the left is just as corrupt.
As an old friend of mine once put it:
"NONE of these politicians got where they got to--- by living at the foot of the cross".

Never mind Hastings comments-----what I find TRULY offensive is that both the Libertarian and Independent Parties were purposly EXCLUDED from the debate the other night! Yet, there has been no outcry! Unbelieveable! Shame on the media especially----- as they are trying as hard as they can to support the failed and corrupt two-party system of Democrats and Republicans.

Makes me glad I do own guns. Thanks to the current administration I will never trust the government (ANY government) again as long as I live.

On President Bush can agree-the Homeland Security act and Patriot act have certainly been the biggest threats to Americans rights to Liberty and Privacy. These acts should have had "sunset" provisions in them.Good point on no response from the media on other polictal parties participating in the debates. That is also why I Have NO confidence in our medias-esp the 4 networks-ABC,CBS,CNN,NBC.Maybe what this country needs is a good INDEPENDENT party president.Just hope we'll get to keep those guns--if Obama gets in-we may not.At this point the US has the WORST media in the world as far as news goes.

Oh, I'll keep my guns no matter what and a hell of a lot of other American citizens (especially those who currently live in "war zones" such as Atlanta's south side, as I once did) will as well. It will take a few more generations of "sheeple" before the Feds can take most of them away.

IMO it is impossible to get a grasp of what is really happening by listening to the evening news----they are all so biased because they have become forms of entertainment----not sources of news. I agree with Gansky that the only way to gather enough information to formulate a realistic opinion is to read four or five sources. I read everything from the London Daily Tory--ooops---Telegraph to the Jerusalem Post,BBC, N.Y.Times, Washington Post, etc. Oh, and lets not forget the most important one of all (speaking of entertainment): "The Onion".
All of them are "online" and are "free" for the taking. So why not?

Rex,

While I respect your posts on technical matters, I can't agree with you about Obama. As a gun owner I don't see any need for any citizen to have a right to possess weapons such as automatic assault rifles, extremely large calibre guns, rocket launchers, surface to air missiles, etc... I also think that Saturday night specials and unregulated gun shows need to be banned.

The argument that fully arming the population will somehow reduce crime rings a bit hollow in light of various events. Most recently Finland - where something like 33% of the population owns guns - saw a terrible tragedy when a gun collector went in and slaughtered 10 people at a school. Finland has about the least restrictive gun laws in the world. Personally I wouldn't want to send my child to a school where all the adults are armed. The chance of an accidental shooting - or a fire-fight - are too great.

I am against banning non-automatic handguns and hunting rifles, but I haven't seen any reason to believe that Obama/Biden would try to ban these things. I do think we have a problem in this nation with uneven gun control legislation. So called "gun free" zones are unenforceable when they are surrounded by a sea of gun shops. There needs to be consistent gun control legislation across local and state borders, and that legislation needs to be enforced rigorously.

Rich: I don't agree on the matter on the guns--We need definitions here-and the politicians and gunmakers cannot come up with any.so banning one class of weapons over another becomes IMPOSSIBLE to define-Its already illegal for you to own rocket launchers,SAMS,etc.under present BATF regulations an assault rifle is defined as a weapon with a 3 position safety-safety on,Semi auto, and full auto or burst. These weapons are under what is called "class 3 weapons" under the BATF you can own or purchase them if you obtain a Federal,State, and County permit. This can take a year to do.I know 2 gun collectors that have such permits.the "assault" weapons that one can bougt on the market are semi auto.-two position safety.Safety on,or fire. And amongst the class 3 collectors in this country-there is NO record of any of their guns involved in a crime. The problem ones are what the drug dealers and smugglers bring into the US.What are "Saturday Night" Specials--no one has a definition. What are the "Large caliber" guns?I have fired some of these and find them invigurating. They have NO crime value.Too big and heavy for most criminals. They have no interest in "large caliber guns"The large caliber guns I have shot are African hunting rifles.Whats an "Unregulated" gun show-again no definition.I attend the gun shows out here regularly.so far no criminals there or people shooting up the place.Just everyday folks and hunters looking for guns and outdoor sports equipment-these items are commonly sold at "gun shows"including ATV's.
Seriously--Obama is opposed to citizens keepiong guns in their homes.this alarms me.And that means ANY type of gun.--including yours and mine.
In North Carolina and Virginia-these are "Concealed Carry" states. You can carry a handgun legally if you pass a qualification test and a test on rules and regs.I know several people that conceal carry-and even while they are driving and to work.so far no crime problems there--Conceal carry helps REDUCE crime since criminals don't know who has a gun and who doesn't.I just don't like that gun control turns us into sheep lead to the slaughter-your means of protection is taken away yet the criminals have and freely use their guns against us.And the rediculous gun law in downtown Wash DC turned that city into a crime mecca. At one point 500 people per year were being killed-and even 30 per night during bad gangfights-Gun control sure worked there didn't it!That is the biggest reason I fled that area-was just getting too dangerous.Out where I am now in NC the gunshots I hear in the morning are deer or dove hunters. In downtown DC was drug deals gone bad.To sum up Americans are saddled with TOO MANY gun laws that accomplish NOTHING.
