ASEA Cylinda 1400

Hey guys, I was at a friends house last night in a trendy very upscale Orange County beach city. When I peeked into the kitchen I noticed the dishwasher was open and all stainless steel inside. The right rack tines made me think Miele. Later when it was closed, it was white, (to match the kitchen), and noticed from the console, (whcih was rather thin vertically,it was an ASEA Cylinda 1400. In small print on the lower left of the console it said, "Made in Sweden." I've never heard of this brand. Though I thought Miele when it was open, the wash arm didn't look like a Miele. What do you guys know about this machine?

Cylinder i think is part of the meloni brand? and as asko?
fredrik should know this more than i do but they are good machines.

Asea is the old name for Asko. Nowadays Cylinda is also used as a brand name in Scandinavia for the same appliances.

Asea was the name (in many countrys) before they were bought by Merloni though they did badege machines that we received in Australia as ASKO-ASEA for a while in the early 90's.

Many would argue that the quality suffered with the name change.

My first front loader, a Malber was by Merloni, but inside the drain cover, the label read "made in Sweden".

This dishwasher was made in Sweden and was sold with the same name here. The 1400 model was the cheapest ones of the 1400 series. The 1405 model being the most advanced one.

They were made in 1991- 1992. A very good and reliable dishwasher. The 1405 model had some problems with the electronic, but otherwise these were tip-top of the line.

Only Miele was better.

Sad thing that Cylinda these days are really bad. Some weeks ago here in sweden there was an warning in the paper about 5 Cylinda dishwashers that could catch fire. Not good at all.

It was a 1462 model too It was most truly the best timer version. Think it was from ca 1991-1993. And then you had the 1500 series. Love those dishers...

Asea Cylinda 1400 Dishwasher

I have the Asea Cylinda 1400 dishwasher discussed in this post. It is probably the best washing dishwasher I have ever used (and I have had many dishwashers, including top of the range Miele models). Even if I over fill the machine everything comes out gleaming. The motor on this dishwasher is huge and extremely powerful. It uses 28 litres on the normal wash cycle (cycle 2 - pre-rinse, main wash and 3 rinses). The temperature dial allows you to select wash temperature 55 or 65 degrees, pots wash (pre-rinse heats to 65 degrees) and with or without heated drying. I wash on 55 degrees without heated drying and everything is dried perfectly. The wash cycle is finished in just over an hour. There is a nifty air vent on the front of the dishwasher that pops open during drying cycle to let the condensed air out, which achieves perfect drying results. This vent closes when you open the door at the end of the wash cycle.

I also love the updated 1402 model, which is essentially the same dishwasher, but reduces rinses from 3 to 2 and comes with a rapid wash cycle. Even with the reduced rinses, the 1402 washes just as well as the 1400. These models are a good representation of when Asko was king of the dishwasher world. If only ABB would buy back Asko from its Chinese owners and bring the company back to it’s original venerable position. I am currently renovating and have purchased two Miele G6925 dishwashers, but I will be very sorry to see this dishwasher go.

Just one question. If this dishwasher performs so well why do you hang a deodoriser in there? Does your machine smell?

That's a lovely dishwasher! I always loved the Asko design, but they were very expensive here, so I never bought one. Yours is very well kept! How old is it now? Have you considered keeping it?

Asea Cylinda 1400 dishwasher

Hi there, to answer your questions. Rapunzel, no the dishwasher doesn’t smell. I probably buy these lemon deodoriser thingies for sentimental reasons as my parents used to buy these when I was young.

Foraloysius, at the moment I have a fairly big garage, so am able to store random items such as multiple dishwashers. But this will be short lived as we are doing a big reno and the garage will go. Plus, while I love old appliances, they can be temperamental due to their age and spare parts can be difficult to find. Currently sitting in the garage is a Asko 1402 dishwasher, which needs a new circulation pump (hence why I replaced it with the Asea 1400). Then I bought a brand new, unused Miele G562 dishwasher because I thought how often does that happen, but the control panel didn’t work. I managed to find a replacement part, but haven’t had Miele out again due to COVID and because I have been so happy with the Asea.

In terms of age, it was launched in 1986 so it would be around 35 years old. I have attached the link to a commercial and Cylinda advertisement. There was also until recently an Asea 1400 Australian commercial, but it has been taken down.

28l, if it was connected to hot water, it would probably be done in 30 mins or thereabouts. But the washing performance is just nuts.

Asea cylinda 1400 parts in the US

Hi, I have an ASEA Cylinda 1400, no idea how old it is as it was in the house when I bought it. Just today I see it is leaking from the bottom of the door, above the bottom panel. When I looked inside I saw a tear in the gasket material on the bottom left corner. Can this be causing a leak?

Any idea if the gasket material is available anywhere? I live in the US but, since I have no desire to replace the machine, I'd consider parts from Europe if they are available. I can post a photo if that helps.

gasket tear is about an inch long. Can this be the cause of the leak?
