At the same sale Rocketwarrior found the Kenmore Ironer, I found this beauty! New In Box -- T-20c for only $12. I also bought a beautiful rolling pin and a NIB WaterPik for my son's braces. Good sale!

It never ceases to amaze me at what people DON'T use!

That is one beautiful toaster Greg, It never ceases to amaze me what you find there. Omaha has to be one of the best places for estate sales along with Minneapolis. I went to 2 estate sales and 5 garage sales on Friday, what did I come home with? A 25 cent can to put cookies in....

OMG!

Terry put it best; Greg, you have the best estate sale luck.

BTW, I got your message and was going to call, but figured it was too late. I'm still up if you want to chat.

Wow!
Great Toaster!
I was lucky to find on in a thrift store just like yours about 2 months ago. It was NIB also, never opened! I thought for sure I would open it and find a plastic GE or something.
I love it, best toaster I have ever used.

Colour me GREEN with envy

Wow! That is one beautiful piece of chrome! Congratulations on your find and have fun with your purchase (if you DARE to use it that is!!)

OMG Squared

Greg,

Amazing. That is an excellent toaster. They never die and make the most incredible toast. I love the self lowering mechanism ... very subtle appliance drama. You know, it's all about the entertainment factor.

I have got to go to more estate and rummage sales. I think I'll ask Tania to go since she seems to have that great karma as you, Fred N., Fred S. and the list goes on.

Enjoy!!

Pat

We have my in-laws Sunbeam toaster that they bought new in 1956. It toasts faster and more even than the new Toastmaster 4 slice toaster we got for Christmas 3yrs. ago.

Sunbeam made some wonderful appliances back in the day. The quality on most all vintage smalls was really good back then, but Sunbeam really ruled. I have this same model, but mine is far from n.i.b. Mine was $7.00 from a basement of an antique store and it is more like v.u.o.b. (very used without box) <:

Great catch Greg!

The Quality of Older Appliances

I have my grandmothers toaster which is approximately 65 years old. It works like a champ. The only reason we quit using it was because the slots were too narrow for bagels. I don't even like bagels all that much. I'm more of an english muffin guy.

It works soo much better than the Kitchenaid toaster we spent $100 on about a year ago. Just shows that spending more doesn't mean you get more. Oh well, another life lesson.

There's even a website devoted to them!

From the site:

"From the late 1940's to 1997, the upscale toaster market was dominated by this classic from Sunbeam. Its sophisticated lines, art deco styling, and consistent toasting quality made it a pleasure both to the eyes and the palate."

This is another one of those products I can't understand them discontinuing.

There is a market for upscale toasters...I see Dualit toasters in stores like Williams and Sonoma. Surely there is a market for them!

If I'm not mistaken, Sunbeam is no longer Sunbeam...but, still, you'd think they'd realize these types of models would represent their brand name better than the $20 plastic jobs, over the long term...

I've never understood the corporate world, and I guess I never will.

1949-1997

I found Toaster.org the other day while poking around, they have a whole section on the evolution of the T-20. I found it shocking that in 1949 CU said:

"Most [toasters] have efficiently engineered external parts ... with appropriate and expressive shapes which are entirely able to stand on their own merits; but most have taken the next deplorable step in adding tasteless decoration on otherwise clean forms. These bits of ornament are usually incised lines in the toaster's side, and range from psuedo-monograms through floral curlicues to quill-penmanship exercises and modernistic patterns of the worst sort", and of the T-20 the editorialist likes that its forms are "firm rather than soft, but it is guilty of bad decoration on the sides."

Ms. Glinda's Shopping List...

Yes, Greg, this message is directed at you... :)

I hope you're keeping a shopping list as we discussed. Will you please add a Sunbeam T-20 toaster to the list, NIB, Mint of course.

Like Pat, I have not had good luck with toasters. I have also spent a small fortune on toasters--most recently a KitchenAid. It's not bad, but I'd like something more sturdy without having to fork out--pun intended--a fortune on a Dualit. And, I'm not sure that they're even worth the money. They look great, but I don't think I'm willing to spend over $200 on an all chrome toaster...

I swear, you Midwesterners have the best estate sales... Robert, I'm also green with envy over your NIB Sunbeam waffle iron.

I'm going to get that Sunbeam T-20 and the little waffle iron too... (If you think I look bad now you should see me first thing in the morning...)

don't get me started on toasters...

I'm on my 3rd one in 10 years, although I will say my current one(Hamilton Beach) has been around for 5 years now, and still works ok.
My mom has a 4 slice Toastmaster Hostess, vintage 1970. It still works perfectly too. Made well and not like the cheap crap today.
Alicia, Minx just bought a Kitchenaid toaster, seems to work ok, but the price was kinda high...

Congrats on the beautiful Sunbeam Greg!

I had 6 of those Sunbeam toasters in our store. One was in an unopened box. I found that automaticbeyondbelief website and offered the toasters for sale. I was paid $300 for the unopened toaster, plus another $50 for the rest of them. I gladly shipped them to whoever (I forgot the name; somewhere in Iowa, I think). I must say, it was one of my better sales.

More Beamers

I grabbed my Sunbeams for this photo. I prefer ToastMasters and Kenmores. The problem is that when you try to make a Sunbeam into something else, the stainless of the case pops into three parts while the Toastmasters and Kenmores hang together (and make better trailers).
