Ball Point Pen Ink in Dryer

A friend of mine put a load of clothes in the dryer with a ballpoint pen and it leaked staining the drum of the dryer.

Does anyone have any suggestions on how she can clean the drum of the dryer? Cleaning solutions etc... I know that one would have to be carefull in what type of solution, being that there is combustion involved.

Any help would be appreciated.

little yellow bottle

There is a product in the grocery store called CARBONA. It's in a little yellow bottle. They have one for blood, ball point ink, grass, mud, etc. Get a bottle of that, and use as directed. The stain will disappear right before your very eyes! Mark

Easy fix

Ball point pen is most easily removed with rubbing alcohol (Isopropyl 70%)or a nice alcoholic hairspray. Spray the areas and blot ( You can actually see it start to run and dissipate)Then wash as usual. As for the dryer drum, it is fine to use this as well. Alcohol evaporates really quickly and loses all of it's flamability as it evaporates.. Hope this helps

I did this very same thing!

It was when my dryer was new. White drum Maytag.

I was heartsick. I mean, it was NEW. Got it September '97, and this was Thanksgiving weekend '97.

I tried 70% isopropyl alcohol, and it was sloooow going. 90% isopropyl from the drug store worked much faster.

Tell your friend to avoid contacting the moisture sensor, and to wipe the drum well, and to run a load of rags or other inconsequential cloth before running valuable clothes.

I now check my pockets thoroughly!

My dryer is gas, but has a sparker, not a standing pilot. I let it air out before running it with the burner.

Granny ran a lipstick through the DE04 couple weeks ago. She and mom cleaned it up best they could, I don't know with what. A few light smudges were left when I looked, didn't appear serious.

I would imagine that the type of drum would make a different. Ink may be harder to get off a painted drum, easier from a porcelain or powder-coated drum, and easiest off a stainless drum. In my experience the plastic vanes can be a bit tenacious when it comes to ink stains.

If you're going to use alcohol or Carbona, it's a good idea to have a window open near the dryer, and a fan blowing in the laundry room door such that the breeze blows gently into the dryer drum. This will provide air turnover and prevent any fume buildups that could be an explosion hazard or a health hazard.
