Bathroom break

Our "powder room" was somewhat lacking in Pizzazz, so we set out to do something about that.

A trip to a store called "Second Use", which deals in used building materials, found this cool sink and medicine cabinet. The fixtures on the cabinet are missing their glass shades, so we faked it with some stuff from Home Depot. The sink is a vintage Crane, which is gorgeous, but has a bit of an issue with the cold water, which we are working on. A coat of paint finished the whole thing off, all for less than $100 bucks!

Love the bathroom and the rubber duck........gives it that final touch!

Very cool bathroom Dan, looks right out of the 50's! Judging by the tank I see you already have a high-flushing toilet in place! That sink is just awesome...I LOVE those recessed-spout models!

Have you checked out any vintage high-flow showerheads?

Then there's the tub....

The tub came with two press-on flower-shaped non-slip appliques. We tried soaking them, we tried scrubbing them, and we still had two press-on flower-shaped non-slip appliques.

So I figured if you can't beat 'em, join 'em, and dragged out this package of pink press-on flower-shaped non-slip appliques that I have been toting around for the last 15 years. The result is this...

Finish it all off with some towel racks.....

Even my mom (who, although married in 1952 is not a fan of the Mid-Century look), loves these towel racks.

Austin, the "commode" is original to the house. But it has a really tacky seat right now, so I didn't include it in the pics ;-) That's the last thing I need to do to really complete the room.

You might consider changing out those "Decora" switches....I don't remember seeing them until the '70s.

I'm not touching my switches! ;-)

I know they're not "period", but I think they're in the spirit of the era. I don't like the standard toggle switches (Except for our Toggleswitch, of course ;-) and the house is too new for the round button switches, like my Grandmother had in her house.

Our neighbor back home had very glamourous switches. They hard to describe, but they were a single round switch that portruded slightly. You hit them to turn the light on, and you hit them again to turn the light off. Those were fun.

No offense taken. I just take wild liberties with my interpretation of "modern". If it LOOKS like something that you might have seen in the post-war era, I'm all over it. ;-)

Great sink - I've always loved those ball-knob faucet handles, you did a great job on the room!

When you do want to take the sticky flowers off the tub, use an old iron and a rag to heat them up a bit. They should peel right up leaving the glue behind which you can remove with lemon oil or Goo Gone. We had them in our tub when we moved in but they were cracked and dirty so I took them out right away.

The ironing trick also works great for contact paper in cabinets.

Dan, fabulous sink. It might be far older than you think. I saw one in a friend's house that was built in the 30s. The beautiful bathroom was supposedly original and that sink was green like the rest of the bath. I love the fact that the spout is part of the sink. That is a beautiful shade of blue on the wall.

Tom, the sink is from the "Drexel" line by Crane, and was available in the post-war years, but the design may date from pre WWII. I only know that because my mom's house, which was built in 1948, had a Drexel sink until they decided to "modernize" in the 90's (GRRRRRRRRR) I have some friends in West Lafeyette, Indiana who have a beautiful home built in the 30's that has similar fixtures. Maybe the just re-introduced them to meet the pent-up demand after the war.

Greg, thanks for the tip - I should have asked that before. But since we *never* take baths, the non-slip stuff will hopefully come in handy. But the day will undoubtely come where I will be tired of those silly pink flowers, so I'll keep that in mind ;-)
