Hi there. I rebuilt my 61 Kenmore set about 10 years ago. I had new center post, and bearings installed. I was shocked how eaten up the old center post was! Anyways, 10 years later, should I pop open the top seal and add more oil? Isn't the top bearing the one that goes bad first? Just thinking of preventative maintenance since I'm 60 yrs old now and a little more arthritis. A rebuild be tough. Could I use a needle oiler to inject past the present seal? Just putting ideas out there, bad or good! Thanks all!!!

Hi, you certainly could take the agitator out and the wash basket and inspect that area. If it looks like the seal is wearing through the plating on the spin tube then some corrective measures would be in order such as replacing the upper seal and the spin tube again.

The reason the original bearings failed was because the seal failed and water got in there. It had nothing to do with a lack of oil as long as water doesn’t get in there the bearings will never need additional oil.
