We were a Buick family...

My mom ALWAYS had Electra 225's a new one every 3-4 years. My dad drove a variety, Rivera, Wildcat, LeSabre, and Regal were all his.
Maybe thats where my thing for huge cars comes from??

My dad converted in 1990, to Fords! Currently my parents have a 1997 Lincoln Town car, and a 2005 Mercury Sable.

Whats a carpet eating Dyson Rob?? You mean there's one that actually works??
 
My grand parents whent from Oldsmobile and Pontiac to Ford in 1990, with the exception of a 1975 Toyota Corolla (had as a 3rd car until 1980ish), 1979 Mercury COugar (didn't last long, grams thought it was too big)and a 1981 Mercury Zepher (which she LOVED and wish shed kept)

I thought I just HAD to a Dyson DC21. It ruined my dining room rug. It fuzzed the nap and pulled a thread out the entire lengh of the rug. The power nozzel has very stiff plastic brushes. I took it back to the store. Dyson's suggestion was to purchase a straight suction nozzle to use on delicate rugs. Funny I have never had this problem with my Electrolux,Hoover or Kirbys! It was a big disapointment. They do have good suction but a very short cord. This was damage you could see after only using the machine 2-3 times. I am glad I didn't use it on my new carpeting.

I have to tell you all.....Jeff did a GREAT job driving this beast!!! He handled it very well......I think the more he drives them the better he gets. He takes my Mini Cooper without me and I don't worry. He does VERY well in the Mini!! The only thing that I thought he might have trouble with in the T.A. is the Hurst shifter...it can be a bitch to shift sometimes if you aren't use to it. It has been a dream of mine since I was 15 years old!!! and Jeff has been my dream since birth!!!!

someone said something about a burnout...i would have let him do it....I do!! LOL He doesn't know how to do that yet but I'm not done teaching him....he'll get there.

this car never sees rain or snow.....however it has been to the track !!! The fastest quarter mile I've been able to get out of it is 12.6 STOCK!!!! it certainly will have the back of your head plastered to the headrest!

My very first car was a 1956 Buick Special Station Wagon
I had a 1958 Limited for a while in the early 70's
and currently as a fun mobile a 73 Electra 225 Custom
with some issues but, it is still a fab auto.
Buick is a beauty too!/Wouldn't you really rather have a Buick?
 
LOL Jeff so many similarities...my folks went to Ford in 1990 as well, purchasing a Mercury Sable. They had that almost 10 years and now they've had a couple of Toyota Camrys.
 
1976 Buick..

If you asked me hich car was my favorite when I was growing up, I would say the 1974 Electra 225 Limited we had. I loved the look of that car! (I'm looking frantically for a picture of it!)
Well the 74 was traded in for a 1978 Electra, which at the time was not all that exciting. I learned to drive on the '78, and grew to really love that car! My parents offered me the '78 a couple of times, but what I really wanted was a '74 -'76. I cruised car dealers and the classifieds looking for a '76(this would have been summer-fall of 1982--I was 18) and found nothing. There were '74-'76 Electras out there, but most of them were well used. I finally found my '76 in January of 1983, at the Oldsbobile dealer in Schaumburg. The car had 40,334 miles on it when I first drove it, and it was love at first sight! I paid $2800 for it, seemed like alot at the time, and they even gave me the name of the original owner who'd traded it in for a new 1983 Delta 88 Royal Brougham!
I loved that '76! A year after I bought it I took it to a local body shop and had all little rust spots fixed, and the whole car painted and a new vinyl top put on. It looked beautiful!
I kept the '76 until 1988. I still don't know why I sold it, I didn't need to really, but I did. I bought my first NEW Buick in May of 1988(An Electra Estate Wagon), and my dad was grumbling about all the cars around, so I sold the '76. I got $1500 for it!
I'll never forget though, I remember my dad coming home from work one evening shortly after the '76 was sold and he commented to me about how strange it was to come home and NOT the that "big old Buick" sitting in the driveway.
I still regret selling that car!
 
A couple of blocks from us there is I'm guessing a 73-76, not sure which, Olds 98 coupe that has been sitting in the driveway since long before we moved here. Never moves, dirty with tree and bird schmutz, basically just slowly rusting away I guess. I keep wondering if I should knock on their door and ask them about it. What stops me is I guess if they were wanting to sell it they would have a sign out. That and then if they did sell it to me reasonably I'd probably be forking out a ton o money to get it cleaned up, licenced/insured etc etc...me thinks I'll stay away. Plus I never thought the Olds 98 was quite as nice looking as the Electra,, sort of like the frumpy sister.

count on no one else! Isn't the "Oldsmobile" history now?
That in and of it self makes it worthy of preservation!

Tom A. from North Canton(Myhooverco) has a very nice 1972 Olds 98 that he takes to car shows and such all the time. Its a beautiful car, but I have to agree, the Buicks were better looking!
 
Well...I of course disagree. I always thought that the Oldsmobile was a good looking car. I think that some years maybe one looked better than the other, but overall they were both good looking cars and essentially the same. In the 1970's the Electa and the 98 were more the same than ever. I have a 1971 Olds 98 Luxury Sedan that I bought from the original family. It is a top of the line car with everything you could want. Since it rides on the big C body along with the Cadillac, the ride is very smooth. They made fewer of the Olds models so that makes them much more rare than the Buick or Caddy version. My family seemed to prefer Olds for some reason so that is what I grew up with.

Yes...it is sad that the Oldsmobile marque is gone. I know that was the straw with me and General Motors. I am not going to put up with crappy construction and minimal resale of its new cars...that is one thing, but now that Olds is gone and my '03 Alero is a pancake, what should I buy? So I have abandoned GM probably for good and bought a Honda Accord. I have never owned a better car. Here is a close up of the '71 Olds built in the good old days!

Not to worry, hoover1060...the Firebird had a Ram Air (air induction) system during most of its production life...

...and it's more tasteful than something I've seen on more than a few Dodge trucks lately: "If you can't DODGE it...RAM it."

Something new...

Well I am definitely broadening my horizons! I like driving the TA, lots of fun, and the manual tranny is something I need to master.
I love the Mini-Cooper! Thats one sweet little car!

With regards to the Grand Marquis, this will be my last rear drive V8 sedan, I don't dislike the large car, just want something more NIMBLE, and maybe a little better on gas. I can't go too small, one of us has to have a car that both dogs can ride in together!
