While in tumbling mode I measured the drum speed with the tachometer. 59.0 rpm

Strange see the back of the drum whizzing past though the soap hole, the water seems to stick to the outside very odd..

I let the machine run till the first drain and interim spin, nothing leaking out of the bearings.

Measured the spin speed 406.9 rpm

The hot valve opened partly only allowing a small flow of water and then stuck in that position and would not stop.

I tried the cold valve but this one is completely closed and nothing flowed.

The signs of very hard water is present in both valves and the two original hoses.

So this is the next step, strip down the valves and clean out the scale.

Hi Mike

Is the water solenoids in you stash complete valves (brass fittings ) or just the electrical coils which are mounted on top of the brass fittings.

Thanks Lee

Better than soap on TV

Lee this is just brilliant mate step by step you are getting there, who cares if you mums Niagara falls water feature doesn't work any more! great thinking on using the pipe.

Those valves should come through but if Mikes are complete yeah why not change them, I am loving this thread it is along time since we had such an interesting restoration going on.

Great stuff

thanks

Hi Mike

It’s nice to now that the top electrical part came separately as a spare part, I’m sure both coils are working and will strip the unit down when I find time I’m sure it’s the scale jamming them up and maybe the rubber parts have all perished, I’m also working an a Bush consol TV from the same vintage year of 1957 which is coming along well too.

Congratulation lee on the continued good work. For hoses it might be worth try car heater hose which you can buy by the metre in Halfords. I have used this successfully on a HM 3334. Its a bit more flexible than garden hose so if its a bit tight soaking the end in hot water may make it a bot more flexible. You might also find lubricating whatever you might be putting it into with a little bit of washing up liquid too.

good luck

Al

The cold fill

Hi lee you probably know this but are you sure the cold fill valve is faulty. It will only kick in in warm wash when enough hot water had been used to kick the thermostat in. Also rinses are likely to be warm and the same will apply there. That's how the lt works so it may be the same it might be worth trying hot water to see if cold water one works at same time.

I could be wrong though as only going on what I know about my bendix. My model d is still sitting in garage

Excellent thread Lee. Lovely machine and really interesting to see the progress with its restoration. Nowt wrong with finding modern ways around getting the machine water tight and seeing how you get around problems is great.

2nd bout of exclamation for today now ....

MY GOD, MIKE! That is one hell of a spares find. Lovely to see all the parts with their individual boxes - each one a little piece of art. Much akin to having a matchbox car still in its original box.
To think that 'pieces' like that have been chucked out of shops over the last 30 years, straight into landfill.

How’s it going chaps?

Richard you right with the cold valve, as I see it on the hot wash setting only the hot valve is energized, while on a warm wash the stats play a part, filling starts with hot only when the temperature triggers the contacts the cold valve becomes energized for mixed fill.

I think its mixed fill on rinsing but until she’s running properly I can’t say for definite.

Onto today’s tinkering.

Firstly some oil for the drive unit, I tried to remove the drain plug from the bottom but couldn’t shift it at all.

I then tried the smaller one to the left, again it would not shift and the square top part started twisting so no chance of removing that one.

How much to put in then, I added about 200ml if I have over filled it will most likely spill out of the filling spout.

Result, the drive is noticeably quieter when running and has made no difference to speed. Which starts off fast and slows down with in a few seconds.

Hopefully the oil I have chosen will do no harm.

Hot valve disassembled what a pig the get apart, components laid out.

On the right we have the retaining nut.

Brass bell ended tub which houses the piston.

Centre of the photo is the piston.

To the left the housing with a rubber washer inside, which I can’t get at.

Last on the left the float switch tube rinsing spout.

The moving parts are encrusted in lime scale.

Having a bath in scale remover, came out all shine and smooth.

Hot valve rebuilt, give it a shack and you can here the piston moving up and down, remember it’s the water pressure pushing the piston down that seals the water flow off and the electric coil pulling the piston up to allow water flow.

Same treatment for the cold valve.

Photo of the unit lay out on the table notice it’s different, the piston is shorter and another bullet shaped piston inside the housing, this bullet piston was stuck and enclosed in muck which had hardened to a crust.

Photo after de-scaling

Back in it’s rightful place, opps forgot to fit the electric coils on the top.

You can just see the piston of the cold valve in this photo.

Testing time, the hose was lashed up and power applied, one off the biggest failures I have ever had.

Hot valve just continues to dribble with or with out the coil energized.

Cold valve just a tiny dribble when energized.

To be total honest I thought I would have cracked it but maybe the valves have too much wear in them to function properly.

So do I make a plate and mount two single, modern valves in place of the originals

Or

Mount them at the bottom of the chasses and route pipes up to the top and leave the original valves in place till some vintage substitutes come along.

Answers on a post card please…..
