I'll be needing a new washer and dryer pretty soon. I've narrowed it down for a washer, but I'd like to find a good, reliable dryer with no bells and whistles. I'd prefer not too large due to a small laundry room, and would also prefer a flat top, but I'd consider back controls. Any suggestions? Thanks in advance for any help you can offer!

I think any basic Whirlpool-sourced dryer would be a safe bet.

Get any BOL Whirlpool, Maytag, Roper or Amana dryer. They are simple, efficient, dry fast and do just exactly what they are supposed to do at a fair price. The design is tried and true.
I have a Maytag BOL electric dryer that’s 3 years old. It does and excellent job, and the lint filter is the bomb. A couple of times I’ve missed a Kleenex in a pocket, and when I took the load out of the washer it was all covered in Kleenex, once it was even a load of dark colors. I thought, well, what the hell, rather than rewash everything lets see if it comes off in the dryer, and by cracky it did, both times! Now to me thats a very fine lint filter.
And the Auto Dry works perfectly too, only once in a blue moon will I find something still damp when the load has finished.

The other and heavier built choice is Speed Queen. These are for sure heavy duty commercially proven dryers. Not a lot of features but fast drying and by far the best quality on the market.

I would dearly LOVE to get a Speed Queen front load washer, and any good plain dryer, but my husband has nixed that idea since the washer alone would be $1900 locally.

(I'm trying to dry the clothes, not keep them damp with steam.)

We had a 2008 Electrolux-sourced Frigidaire Affinity FL washer and dryer set until we moved a year and a half ago. I liked that dryer, but I'm not sure if the manufacturer is the same now. I don't know if one company owns the other or what anymore.

If you're truly shopping on a budget, and want no bells/whistles, simply something that dries your clothes and does a good job at it, I say the BOL Roper/Amana 6.5 cu ft. This dryer can regularly be found under $400.00 and the design hasn't changed in many years.

That would be my choice if the Kenmo dies. Matter of fact it's a dead ringer replacement for what I bought 8 years ago.

really have NOT changed. I can attest to this because I just got one. I'm not talking about the matching FL pairs......but the dryers that pair with the TL washers. I know things have gotten cheaper over the years but I really can't tell much difference in this new whirlpool dryer I just got vs one I had from 2002 OR the one we had in 1997 in a rental OR the one my grandma had (LOL)

I agree with all the comments about Whirlpool based dryers (Estate, Amana, some Kenmore, Whirlpool)
You mentioned something compact and flat top.
That would be a 24" compact dryer..... made by Whirlpool. I wouldn't call this inexpensive, but if it's limited space you're dealing with...
Maybe used?
You can even hang this one the wall above the washer to conserve space.
I second the Whirlpool dryer assuming it being a top lint filter model.
Also the best electric dryers are the ones that have a gas burner in them, hopefully that is an option for you.

My current dryer is a Kenmore. I think it was made by Frigidaire. It's 27 inches wide, so that width is fine for my space, so I don't need the ones they classify as "compact". I just can't go much bigger.
On Friday my husband wants to go to a local store that has Speed Queen, Electrolux, and I'm sure Whirlpool as well. I can't believe it, but he is actually a little interested in the Speed Queen because of the 10-year warranty!!! I don't care about matching brands, and the SQ dryer is more than 1300 bucks. We still have the original dryer that we bought when we bought this house 21 years ago. Dryers seem to last a lot longer and with less trouble than washers, so I think I would be content with a cheaper one. Whirlpool sounds great to me.
We have used electric only, so I imagine we will stick with that. I don't care one way or the other. Most clothing I only dry for 5 minutes, then hang to dry. I fully dry towels, sheets, rugs, etc. Hey, that's probably why my dryer has lasted so long. It doesn't get nearly the workout my washer does.

The first three digits of Kenmore model numbers (syntax of NNN.nnnnnnnnn) is a code for the source manufacturer. You can cite it here for a translation or search online for "sears manufacturing codes."
