I was reading some detergent reviews on various consumer sites and it seems that of the P&G detergents on sale here, Bold seems to get absolute rave reviews and extreme brand loyalty.

Just wondering how other people like / dislike it?

I find it quite pleasant, generally prefer it to Ariel. I really find the new Ariel smell very unpleasant, it's like cheap car air freshner.

Unilever's Persil seem to have done something funny to their smell too. I find clothes come out smelling less plesant than they used to. The Persil with Comfort is good though.

Just an American's two cents...

Over here, we had Bold for years, and they discontinued it.

The name brand "Gain" seems to have supplanted "Bold".

They brought out a liquid and powdered version of "Gain with Softness", although not with the appealing fragrances you guys have with your Bold.

Anyhoo, they haven't sold well here, and most stores are discontinuing it...to top it off, the powdered version scored dead last in the most recent ratings in CU!

After watching launderers in action here in North America and in the UK/IRL/EU over the last several years, I believe many folks over the pond are more likely to want a "one-box" solution to doing laundry. Whether this is economically based or just convenience, I do not know.

Over here, we seem to be more attached to our additives, like bleaches, seperate softeners, etc. I don't think having just one product has as much appeal here.

Just my $.02.....

I used to like Bold when it came in the one variety - a blue box and I think it was called Bold 3. As soon as they started with the different flavours and then changed the fragrances, I stopped using it altogether. I recently bought a box of the 'Ocean Breeze' flavour as I thought the smell was quite close to the original. I am totally unconvinced at 2 in 1 softening properties so used Surcare softener so as not to mask the nice fragrance. I found it very suitable on coloured loads but stain removal on whites was very poor so I have gone off it again. My Mum used it for a few years when I was a teenager in her twin tub and the smell around the house on washday was wonderful. She was pleased with the results too and that was a result in itself as she is not easily impressed!!

I am quite a loyal Ariel fan but I have to agree that the fragrance is not too good at the moment. I find the colour variant much better on the nose than the white and would suggest they should use it on both. Whatever happened to the wonderful fragrance on Persil Colour liquid? I miss that too.

oxydolfan -

I strongly suspect that it's convienience rather than economy. Laundry detergents in Europe tend to be aimed at the people who like to "set and forget". In general we've no interest in fussing over adding various things to the machine.

I also suspect that's why tablet and gel/liquid pouches are so popular.

You throw the gel pouch into the machine then "set and forget".
The pouch disolves releasing the liquid into the wash.

Same goes for those powder tablets, people can't even be bothered measuring.
You just put 1 or 2 tablets into the dispensor drawer and turn the machine on. They react with the water and fizz apart as the machine fills.
(In the case of Persil tabs, you put them into a net (like a tiny laundry bag) and throw them into the back of the drum)

Actually full ingredients disclosure seems only to apply to

This site gives you access to the full list of ingredients present in P&G (Procter & Gamble) laundry and cleaning products that are currently on sale in Europe. This information is part of the requirements of the new EU Regulation of The European Parliament and of The Council of 31 March 2004 on detergents.

Interesting that the ingredients are so similar although the results, in my experience are so different. Some years ago, I was on a long tube journey from Heathrow to Piccadilly and read the Standard cover to cover. Amongst the articles was a test on detergents that rated Sainsbury's Novon colour detergent better than the new formula Ariel (whatever it was called then) at everything, including whites washes. I always used Novon in those days as it came in very handy concentrated formula and good size boxes with a neat little scoup. Plus, you could buy refill bags for the boxes. Shame they rebranded/packaged it all

Ah, Novon.

I worked for Sainsburys at the time and Novon was indeed a fantastic detergent, made by NOVONORDISK (I think in Sweden) a leader in the field of enzyme technology. My uncle (personnel director for Sainsburys) told me that they made a loss on Novon, they sold it for less than they bought it.

Sainsburys own label products are generally really good, the Perform detergent now is Henkel as we know......and plus, their ginger wine is £2-59, Stones Ginger Wine is £5-79 in Thresher, and they both make a lovely Whiskey Mac for a winter's eve.....

wow i've heard of that detergent "ariel" its extremely popular from my homeland in puerto rico thats what my grandmother uses and from looking and learning in this website i had no idea it was popular in england,uk etc.
Also in pr the have a tide version called "ace" its expensive and i swear its exactly like tide anybody know anything about this? it looks identical with th orange bottle or box with the same bold letters powder or liquid and same scent!

thanks oxydolfan1

omg how did you find that? thanks for posting it i feel like at pr now lol with my grandma shopping. another thing home come there bleach comes in a all blue bottle or purple or orange and here they dont do that? is it different packaging companies? anyways thanks agian i enjoyed that lol! ;)

No problem, the Clorox down there is actually made on the island, and I believe it is the purple bottle that is a product we don't have here, a pourable degreaser for drains.

They have Wisk, Snuggle, all, etc. but their products are like the ones we have up here (see link)...

They still have "Peach Vel", a dish detergent that Palmolive made years ago here...

As far as I know, they don't have Gain.

If you want "Tide with Bleach", you have to buy "Ace Con Blanqeador" (yes, I know, I slaughtered that, lol!)

Mrx...thanks for that "science in the box" site!

Maybe there are additional stringencies for the UK market that don't apply to Ireland as well, since a larger part of the latter's boundaries are on the Atlantic?

I believe I may have been considered a bit odd in Ireland, as I was constantly peeking into closets and cabinets looking to see what people washed and cleaned with!

hoovermatic and Nick,

I’m really glad you have both mentioned Novon. :-) If, for any reason, we couldn’t get Persil, we used to use Novon. I loved the packaging, and it never over powered me perfume-wise either. I quite miss it – I was the only detergent apart from Persil that ‘agreed’ with us.

I always remember the list of ingredients on Novon and Persil were very comprehensive and easy to follow.

Memories… :-)

Haven’t tried the ‘new’ ones at Sainsbury’s. :-) It’s funny because I was thinking about them today. :-)

Regards,

Carl :-)

For nickuk :-)

Nick! :-)

We know someone who worked in our local Sainsbury’s for many years and was very knowledgeable. I know you would expect her to push things for Sainsbury’s, but she was brutally honest, and we trust her and knew her before she came to Sainsbury’s, and I remember her telling us how good Novon actually was.

In fact, from experience, we have found Sainsbury’s to stock some pretty good own-brand cleaners over the years. I guess not all are good, but I have got on well with some hand pump soaps that are ideal for the kitchen (not too drying and no strong perfume, although kitchens really need perfume-free soaps, really, I guess), etc.

Persil non-bio tablets are our daily driver, but I do like to occasionally try something else if I can manage the perfume! hehe ;-) Mum does, too – she likes the odd change as long as the perfume is not too strong and as long as it all rinses out OK. :-) Mum usually changes the detergent she uses for hand washing between Woolite and Persil Silk and Wool.

Regards,

Carl :-)
