We'll be leaving our Duet HT pair behind when we move. I saw Bosch "Nexxt" machines in 500 and 800 series yesterday and really liked them, particularly their open-flat and self-closing doors, but they may be too deep for the laundry room where we're going. We might be looking at Frigidaire Affinity as our only option.

If anyone has testimonials to share on either of these makes, please have at it below!

Thanks,

Ralph

I've had good luck with Electrolux/Frigidaire front load washers. I've had the 2940 for two years without a hitch, and I handed down an 8 year old FrigGEmore set to my son that has never had any issues.

If you are not getting the Affinity with the heater, I'd recommend considering the 2940 (Gallery?) over the Affinity - more options and CR says better cleaning. I think the 2940 uses a little more water...someone said that somewhere, not sure if true.

For a tight spot, you can't beat the Frigidaires. Almost every other front load set has a bigger footprint.

F R I G I D A I R E ! ! !

They are made in Agusta,GA. in the same plant as the Wascomat commercial machines. That means that the FRIGIDAIRES have to pass the same high standards as the Wascomat commercial models! Best frequency of repair record for front loading washers too.get the 8,000's the washer and dryer have stainless steel tubs and an interior light!!!!

parts availability

The FRIGIDAIRE models also have parts readily available. The problem with the other brands is the time needed to wait for foreign parts to be shipped.I waited 5 months for a new pump for an 8 month old L.G compact washer dryer! They(L.G.)extended my warranty 6 months but had I not had my "Colapso"I'd have been waring real dirty clothes!

Gallery

I have searched for "Gallery" models and can't find them in stores or on line--even on Frigidaire's site. Everything is "Affinity." Has "Gallery" been discontinued or is it just a trim level? Do "Gallery" models have larger capacity? I'm not thrilled with the 3.5 cu ft size of the Frigidaire dryers but I may not have a choice.

The Frigidaire washers have the 3.5 cu ft capacity. The dryers are 5.8/5.9 cu. ft, which I found to be on the small side when I had my Gallery pair. The dryer sometimes had a hard time drying a load the washer had no trouble holding, especially jeans and towels.

Bosch

In the US is way overpriced. Go with the Frigidaire.
In Europe, Bosch is a very nice, mid-range company...sort of like an Oldsmobile was here.
But not at all what they are marketed as over here.

I bought my mom a Frigemore back in 2000, no repairs, used 2-3 times a day. The problems they have are well known and pretty much all under control, but if you do have trouble, parts are readily available and everything can be done by a moderately competent person...which you are, or you wouldn't be a fan, no?

If you can do so, get a standard US designed dryer. The difference is only .5cu ft or so, but boy is it a difference (talking about the smaller US ones). The matching dryers from Electrolux are very quiet, but they are on the small side.

Yes, the dryer capacity is my main concern. If I wash a king-sized mattress pad or comforter I know a Frigidaire dryer is likely going to have a hard time with it compared to my current Duet.

As for washer repairs, it would depend on how much is involved. I'm not a tear-down kind of fix-it guy and bearings, should they still be an issue, would be left to a pro. I'd likely opt for an extended warranty.

Also, do the Frigidaires have an on-board heater? I would like the "sanitary" cycle option like my current Duet has. Again, I haven't found any such information on line.

The top of the line Affinity washer has a water heater.

The dryers are on the smaller side, compared to other US models, but that is because they have a smaller footprint. They do a great job and have been chosen as Best Buys by CR for their performance. I've been pleased. If I wash a large load of jeans....like eight pairs, then I will split the load into two dryer loads. No big deal since I very seldom wash that many jeans at once. There are only two of us in the household now so the capacity of both machines suits us fine.

Other US dyers will be at least 4-6 inches deeper, and many taller too. Just depends on how much room you have in your laundry room. I had to go with the Frigidiare dryer since my setup is built in under a counter in a small laundry room. If the dryer was deeper I would not be able to open the laundry room door.

NONE of the current dryers do a fantastic job on any king size matresses. They do better at the coin laundry or hung out on the line.tHEY'RE JUST NOT MADE TO BE MACHINE DRIED A HOME.

A freudian slip?

I never put my king-sized mattress in the dryer.(LOL)

Just kidding...I knew what you meant.

I can wash and dry my Cal King down comforter in my Neptunes. Does a fantastic job with tennis balls in the washer and dryer.

Even with my 7.0 cu ft Duet dryer I still have to pull the mattress pad out and re-arrange it to get it fully dried. So if that's what I would have to do with a Frigidaire it's no big deal.

Thanks for the input. Much as my partner loves the Bosch, I don't think those will fit in the space we're working with.

Well, I worked for Electrolux and Electrolux-Wascator designing washers and dryers for many years, but I can talk about affinity because I wasn't involved on it's project, but I do have a washer and an electric dryer.

Some people say affinity doesn't clean because it uses less water, and a washer can't clean with only 2 teaspoons of water, blah, blah, blah.

I have only one thing to say: Affinity is one of the best washers I've seen on last 10 years.
It saves gallons and gallons of water each cycle, It really cleans (if you know how to dose your detergent) and it rinses very well. The best thing: You can forget the HE detergent marketing bullshit and use regular detergents in it
It's extraction is amazing and the best of all, Affinity is nothing less than a Wascomat washer with a cute cosmetic design.

If you want to see it working BEFORE ordering, please feel free to add my MSN [email protected] or Skype Thomasortega, I can show it on webcam.

Bosch

My partner is really pushing for Bosch. I do like the way the doors are on the heavy side, open flat and close--and latch--by themselves. Such an improvement over the clunky and poory designed latches on our current Duets. And controls are on top instead of in front. One less protrusion. The Affinity machines' capacities appear much smaller visually than just 1/2 cu ft for the washer, and the dryer drum is absolutely tiny at 5.8 cf compared to most others that are 7.0 cf.

So if Bosch will fit, we will probably go for them. It's now hinging, so to speak, on the dryer vent connection and how much more room that will require.

The Bosch machines seem like they are well made. I had the Kenmore version of the Frigidaire frontload washer...the one with the control panel on top. The washer is decent but the dryer doesnt match what the washer can hold. At 5.8 cuft thats a tad small. For most average sized loads its not an issue and they dry well. But when you want to dry a comforter thats bulky your better off at the laundromat.
The Bosch dryer looks nice and and big and at 6.7 cuft its kinda deceiving with its size. One thing I did notice that the Bosch dryer doesnt move alot of air. The brochure says 170 cfms...it maybe plenty for some people but my Miele kicks ass at 350cfms. That dryer keeps clothes at body temp and is very fast. So lets us know what you guys get.

I'll keep you posted. We should have something lined up within the next 10 days or less.

This is a whole new experience, selling a house and having money to spend on the next place.

Also, since these washers will be adjacent and open to the family room in the new house, we want them to be as attractive as they are quiet (although I don't mind the looks of the Affinities.) In the case of the Bosch pair, the dryer is supposed to be super silent. Generally with FL pairs, the dryer is the machine that makes the most noise. Looks like somebody is going to pout if we don't go for the chrome trimmed 800 series.

I'd love to spluge on a Miele pair but the Bosch machines are already seeming like an extravagant purchase. We are both hooked on the way the Bosch doors function. Just let go of one and it will close and latch on its own. It may be an illusion but the design of the doors makes both drums seem like even larger capacity than they really are.
