Broke Back Mountain

Help Support :

Me thinks we hashed this one out in another lengthy thread a while back. Guess what I've still not seen it that's how much I hate going to movies. LOL
I think many were hoping it would win best pic and it didn't so whether that's something to discuss I dunno. Can't say as I didn't see any movies over the last few years to compare it to. I watched about 10 minuts of Oscars before I was bored to death but what little I caught about Capote I think that is a movie I'd like to see when it comes out on DVD next week. LOL
if I had a DVD player that is.
I am so clueless about movies, actors, etc. it's so far removed from my interests and thought patterns

They were both very good movies--

But I liked "Capote" somewhat better. If we're giving letter grades, I'd give "Capote" an "A', and "Brokeback Mountain" an "A-"

They were both interesting glimpses into gay existence, however.

My life does not resemble either movie at all, but I could relate a bit more to "Capote."

They both gave me a lot to think about concerning violence, masculinity, and homosexuality.

PS Hoffman deserved the Oscar, and I am glad he won.(He deserved it for "Magnolia"!)

I am delighted that three movies -"Transamerica" included, did so well at the box office.

Would it be too much to hope that Hollywood might be growing up a little?

I never saw this movie--the trailer was bad enough, but do you remember "Boat Trip?"

I can relate

I had a special awards presentation copy,so got to watch this movie at home a few times. It did not make me cry,or even sad. Just angry. Reminded me of when I was 17 and had my very first gay relationship, which was a very painful, but wonderful experience. We even had a couple bloody fights outside, the 3rd year we were together. We stayed together almost 5 years. I recalled how we had to be SO secret, and always worried about being "clocked" It was such a strain on our relationship. We never talked about "gay",we just were just totally in love. As I watched the movie for the 2nd time,I recalled that the story took place in 1963,and that I met my first boyfriend in 1972. Then I thought....Oh yeah! That is only a difference of 9 years... No wonder I'm pissed off! I do hope that perhaps this wonderful story will help to pave the way for the coming generations of young gay people,so their first love experience will not be such a challenge to live.
Can honestly say,I do have the satisfaction of knowing that I was the "Jack Twist",and my boyfriend was the other guy. Don't think I could have handled watching if it were the other way around.

Did youall hear that someone--I forget who--bought the two shirts from the movie for over $100,000.00? Said they were the "ruby slippers" for a new generation.

And he's keeping them one inside the other.

Of everything in the movie, it was the shirts that nearly did me in.

I am truly disappointed the Broke Back did not win best picture. The story fits so many gay couples (male or female) and touches on so many issues that they experience. Growing up in small town America and being almost 38 years before I felt comfortable in my own skin it touched me deeply.

It hopefully will be out on DVD soon. A movie I will watch to remind myself of how important it is to love yourself and share that love with someelse.

I did not see the film...

I did not see the film but who saw it told me it was a wonderful love story!

Personally it treats a very "delicate" theme... as what happend some threads ago, I considere VERY VERY VERY difficult to speak about homosexuality. We all have different opinions on it...

Anyway, if you have not seen yet the film, see it as soon as you can, it will be wonderful!

Im not surprised

That it didn't win. I haven't seen "Crash" or "Capote".
It's good that it got the three Oscars and the Golden Globes.
I'm sure it will eventually be considered one of the "all time"
greats.

why crash won

Jon Stewart gave away the answer in one of his jokes. Introducing people, he said "Will everyone in the audience who was NOT in Crash, please stand up. "The cast is huge. Remember, everyone in the audience got to vote on best pic. And of course, what pic are you going to vote for if not the one you're in; hence the win.

Crash's win was a big shock; everyone forgot to do the math. Remember Brokeback was mostly a two character flick. Even Jack Nicholson ) raised a a wide eyebrow when he saw the name on the card, before announcing the winner.

There's an enormous and really satisfying thread under this index around the beginning to middle of December (Ithink); title is :Brokeback Mount. It's great reading.

I'm in the middle of Crash with a class. We stopped today after the actual crash, where Matt Dillon and a beautiful actress whose name I don't know perform so brilliantly and viscerally that you can't breathe and you almost cry. So far, the film is spectacular. In case you din't know, as I didn't, the topic is race relation in LA; no one and nothing is spared.

perception

Don't forget it won Best Director and maybe two awards.

Of course it was the best film; Crash won on a technicality.

And the fact that everybody wanted it to win and expected it to win, even a Supreme hetero like Jack is wonderful and clear validation.

HONEST: everyone in Hollywood was rooting for it. We should rejoyce.

It's just the cruelty of math. The fascism of mathematics ruled the day.

What can I say. I was Brokeheart too !

A movie is being judged here.......

not my social community. I do not need a movie to win an award to validate me. I was not that impressed by the movie.
The 6 top awards went to 6 movies. I'd say it was a good year for movies.
I am really glad that Brokeback did not sweep the oscars. Other than it touching on an issue that has not been dealt with before, it was just a movie to me. I certainly have saw better movies, and worse ones. I think it was treated fairly.
**ready to surrender my card now**

Now Boys!

While Brokeback Mountain was an ok movie....there was not ONE movie this year that was REALLY an Oscar movie...and hasn't been one for several years now. Hollywood is putting out CRAP. Even Capote was a good film but certainly NOT a great one. Think of the Oscar winners of the past! They're just not making GREAT movies. Nothing to choose from. Mark

BTW

..the gay theme just isn't THAT interesting anymore. It's been done.......and done......and done.....and done......and done......been done with lesbians, transgenders, drag queens, regular guys, lawyers, cowboys......and done......and done......and done.....Mark
