I've made another change in an attempt to speed up some of the longer threads. The Select-o-Dial drop down menu worked really slick for those of us with newer, higher memory computers. On older computers all the memory usage that the drop down menu was using was causing some longer threads to slow to a crawl.

I'm experimenting with changing the drop down menu to simple icons. I've also changed the Information Bar above each post so that if it is a post you made, it will be in a lavender-ish color to make you own posts stand out in longer threads.

Here is what I need to know...

#1 When you hover over the Edit/Remove Post icons (on posts you created) if you keep the mouse over the icon for at least one second can you see the roll-over text pop up?

#2 For those of you who had some of the longer posts slow down, does this speed up the loading any?

It pops right up and I can see everything; and I do not notice any speed issues.

Also you may have explained this but I assume everybody's own bar is now pink... just noticed this
 
Actually Jed its Lavendar :-)

I did this to make it easier for everyone to be able to pick out their own posts when reading long threads.
 
Feature Request

I read the site from both home and work. So lots of threads in one place or the other never progress past the "wash" label. I'd like a command to "mark all as read" (set "spin") so I can see from the less-used browser which ones are still active and which ones are static. Threads which are still active transition to "rinse" when someone posts in them.

Hi Todd,

That's not a bad idea actually, although one can now do nearly the same thing by clicking on the thread and immediately backing out.

Another feature I thought at some point would be nice to have is a "Mark as Uninteresting" so the thread would still pop in the index list, but would be in a light gray, so its easier to ignore. Clearly all of us here see occasional threads that are of great interest to some members, but not necessary to ourselves.
 
 
I don't get hover text on the control icons, but the associated function appears to be accessible if the icon is clicked.  I don't have any posts new enough to allow editing or deleting (well, except this one now) but the "Report Offensive Post" function is accessible on the rest of them.

Firefox 3.6.8 on Win2K Pro.

David, 6 years is not excessively old.  I use a PC at work that's 12 years old.   :-)
 
Thank you Glenn! Question, can you see the hover text on icons where you are allowed to edit or remove your post because less than 6 hours has passed????

Also...

Can you and/or anyone else who cannot see the rollover/hover text here in the Discuss-o-Mat check out this site. On the upper left hand of the page are three icons with hover-text (see the red circle in the image below). Can you see the hover-text on this site?? Thanks everyone in advance!

Robert, I don't see the hover text on my new post above, or at the refrigeration site.  Looking at the source code on both sites, images are coded with both alt and title tags, so it's apparently something quirky with Firefox on my Win2K, IE6 hover text works.  The same Firefox version on XP, hover text works.  Sorry, I shouldn't have said anything about it, I recall the same thing happening when you were working previously on the control icons.
 
No I appreciate your help Glenn, I am glad you said something as this is good for me to know. So now the question still remains, who else cannot see the rollover text?
 
It seems to be working for me on the post I created over in the As the Tub Turns forum. I get the hover text on edit and remove. I went to the post Quality Ranges in this forum and though no new posts there, when I clicked Spin it dropped right to the bottom. That post, due to the pictures in it was loading a bit slowly in the past.

Using an 8yr old HP, 1.6P4 Processor and, apparently 894mb RAM. I am seeing the Rollover text with no problems and I too tried Quality Ranges #1 thread and yes, it seemed to be noticeably quicker. Noticed the lavender bar last night too.

I like the idea of "Mark as Uninteresting" too.

This is an edit: Whilst I could see the rollover text before my posts were too old for editing, removal. Tried again with the above post and all fine - editing and removal are both there
 
Testing for hovering text...

MacOS 10.6.4:
Firefox 3.6.7 yes
Safari 5.0.1 yes

MacOS 10.4.11:
Safari 4.0.5 yes
Firefox 3.5.9 yes

MacOS 9.2.2:
iCab 3.0.5 (PPC) no

So it works for me, except when using the old mac. I don't notice a difference in download speed.

Noticed something else when using iCab: when I use the "Update & Preview" button, I sometimes get the message: "Network Error #-3159". Not a big problem beause I use iCab only for testing the new AW features :)[this post was last edited: 8/5/2010-03:33]
 
I can see the text, and today when I went into the Bear thread, I clicked on Down to Last and zip I was at the end, yesterday it took a long time to get to the end of the thread, don't know if this was a computer issue on my end or what.

I do think that not using a drop down menu formatted different for each and every post speeds the loading of the text portions of the pages so you can pop down to the bottom while the images are still waiting to load.

I guess I really cannot be too concerned with 12+ year old computers, but maybe I can change the graphics to be more obvious.

I suspect this is why the google.com interface is so simple with almost no pizazz so it can support computers practically back to the Radio Shack TRS-80!
