This change I think is pretty cool, I'm sure there will be a bug or two, so bare with me it will be worth it I promise.

Go back to the Index page and hit refresh twice. All purple links (viewed) will be reset to blue links (not-viewed) to set up this change. You will notice some new icons next to each thread. The "Program-Computer" (named lovingly after the late 1950's Program-Computer Westinghouse Laundromat) will not only remember what threads you have seen so far but also what was the last post in the thread you have seen. This works only per computer, so if you read threads at both work and home it will only remember on what ever computer you are using.

If you are logged in you should see now three new thread indicator lights WASH, RINSE and SPIN.

wash-on.gif
WASH LIGHT ON means you never seen this thread (at least on the particular computer you are currently using). Click on the wash icon and it will take you to the top of the thread.

rinse-on.gif
RINSE LIGHT ON means you've been in this thread before, but there are new posts that you haven't seen as of yet. Click on the lighted RINSE indicator and it will take you into the thread and it will land on the first post you haven't read yet.

spin-on.gif
SPIN INDICATOR LIGHT ON means you've seen all posts in this thread, if you click on the SPIN light it will take into the thread but you will land at the bottom of the thread.

Notice that each indicator light has an arrow, the arrow is a clue into where in the thread you'll land, up arrow on WASH means you land at the top, down arrow on SPIN means you'll land at the bottom. Double arrow on rinse means you land at the first post you haven't seen you.

By the way, in order to see this change you must be logged in and have Javascript enabled on your browser. All browsers come with Javascript enabled so if you didn't purposely turn it off don't worry about it.

Questions, comments, ideas? Bring on the bugs too!

See how it changes back from Spin into Rinse for each new post that is posted. Then it takes you to the first unread post.

I see one minor bug already. Off to fix it.

I just reverted the code, I see the old style threads are having issues with this change. I'll fix it and put the lights back on. Be back soon.

It works for me (Mac OS 10.6.2 / Safari 4.0.4). Does this feature only counts ones visits when logged in? I have noticed since the introduction of the green arrows that I'm frequently not logged in.

I probably need to acquire a new routine...

OK we're back, all fixed. I'm sure there will be other bugs so please let me know what you find. Also users who are on older computers please let me know how fast or slow this is. I tried to optimize the code so its a zippy as possible considering the number of variables involved.

Hi Theo, yes all new features that I'm incorporating will only be seen by Discuss-o-Mat members, so please keep yourself logged in if at all possible when on your regular computer.

Gary, that means that they are still in the old format (non-database) and cannot save any of the new features in them. All threads created on or after Feb 24, 2010 are in the new format. Once those old threads fall off, everything will have indicator lights.

Looking good Robert

I noticed that in Imperial threads:
27121
27067
27055
27182
27193

Dont have buttons either.

I am using a 2002 HP 1.6GHz with 896MB available RAM and the screen refresh time seems fine to me, maybe a slight delay, but certainly nothing I could not live with. Connection speed will have a part to play too I guess

Is my memory playing tricks on me or do I remember reading something about the last post times going to be displayed in the time zone where we live? I am seeing the message I just posted as 14:38 whereas it is 15:38 here (EDT). Just curious.

Gary

Al see my post above (422737) in this thread. I forgot to mention that the indicator lights will only show up on the new threads created on or after 2/24.

I'm glad to hear the response is good for you. I'm hoping its nearly as good on even older computers.

Not yet Gary, but that feature is coming. Its only my list of things to work on next. You'll have to tell the system what time zone you want displayed in your profile. I'll let everyone know when that feature is ready.

Actually, this is really cool Robert.

I was pondering if you would be able to do a similar update and you took the words right from my mind! The only other idea that came to me was to have the DB count the amount of reads a thread had and display that along with the number of relpies a thread had.

Ben

count the amount of reads a thread had

Yup that's already on my to-do list as well Ben. A thread read counter would be very fun, at least while the thread is on the active list.

I also thought a "I like this post" (thumbs up) counter on active posts could be fun as well.
