Burco D3 Dryer Restoration Stray Wire Help

Hello,

My first time posting to this forum, after having been a follower on the website for several months.

I recently bought a working Burco D3 tumble dryer off ebay.

My name is James, I am 24 and an avid fan of the 50s/60s, and everything in my flat is from that era, including my 'new' Burco.

Im not sure if this is an automicwasher.org sacrilege but When restoring the washer from its rusted state, I chose to paint and finish it off in my own design to look more like the American Washers and dryers from the same time. More chrome

Anyway, after some paint, some chrome, and all other little bits, I was just about to put the foe formica top back on the dryer, when I realised that one of the wires has come loose!

I have attached pictures below to help with my description. It is a red wire that seems to lead from the mains cord and connected somewhere by/around the timer. I cant seem to find any remnants of the metal fitting or shadow of dust where it once connected, so I figured one of the many wise people on here with a Burco may be able to tell me where this wire goes?

Hi James and welcome!

I have a similar dryer I think , I don't know its numbers but mine has a small glass window and did have blue plastic trim, this was broken so I put a chrome handle on and painted it beige to match a fifties fridge I had. It's now at my dads as his dryer as I've got a 1965 bendix washer dryer. I'll try and have a look at my machine to find where the wire goes, one thing to check if you haven't already , if yours has a small circular cover on the front to the lower right of the door , remove this and Hoover out all the fluff, it's not a filter but more a cover as this is the channel where the air is pulled through from the top of the drum to the fan, these are nice machines quiet and mine has 0,1,2,3 for temperatures.

We would all love to see pics of machine , your kitchen , flat appliances, you! as we all appreciate 50 60s things

Hi mine is very similar but with chrome facia , mine blows air out of front at bottom in a small bag a bit like a fishing net, connecting an air pipe is not really possible unless you remove filter or keep removing pipe each time to empty it,

I had a Burco dryer some years ago and i am sure it had a light in it, I can see from you pictures where the bracket would mount, and the white wire comes from the door switch and the Red from the mains.

But yours appears to have that part missing

Great to see you have taken the trouble to rescue this dryer, and look forward to seeing the souped up version of it. Although there is always the tendency to try and keep vintage appliances as origional as possible sometimes that cannot be done and also, at the end of the day its yours to do what you wish with it.

It rather looks like another variation for the Parnall/Bendix/Fishlow dryer that has featured here on several occasions - I myself rescued the Fishlow version a couple of years ago although I have passed it on to another collector. I did take some photos of the inside at the time although I have not been able to track them down yet but will keep looking.

Be great to hear of any other 50s/60s stuff you have too

Here is a picture I took last night of the dryer. Not the best lighting but it gives you an idea of the look.

when I opened the top of it original there was no trace of a mount or anything like that for a light, and the break on the 'prongs' of the wire looks relatively fresh so I think I must have knocked it off of something.

When I took off all the panels for painting I cleaned out the tube behind the circular 'Tumblair' panel which was so heavily caked with dust I could have used the role as insulation

I think you did quite a nice job of it, from the ebay listing you posted it was certainly not in mint condition. And our friend ChesterMike will be pleased with the chevron as it is reminiscent of Servis

hi James i was at my Dads tonight so got chance to take some photos, the red wire from the live side of the mains block at the back goes to a small block under the timer on the right hand side. Mine also has a place for a lamp but sadly none was fitted which is a shame as it would look cool with the glass door. I hope its some use.

this pic shows my pimping attempts and the mains block at the back as well as the ducts in the lower right hand side where the fan sucks the hot air through the clothes.

What washer do you have? any other vintage things?

Your Burco looks great. Im guessing yours must be an earlier model as it is a lot more '50s' looking than mine was before I had my way with it.

It is interesting about the exhaust filter bag. Mine has a plate where your filter is but nothing behind it. Instead it vents out the back with a fitting for a venting house. I guess it must have been an option of some sort.

Have you ever purchased a new belt for yours? the belts on mine are more or less fine, but could use a replacement. I purchased a 'burco d3 belt' on a spare part website but it is a much larger size. maybe there are newer burcos called D3s?

Ill attach some more pictures of my flat. I also have a Hoover 638 in the closet which is not pictured.

Do you have the fridge and cooker connected? I have been surprised by how many of those Bellings crop up - there have been a quite a few on ebay recently. Is that a Perido TV? Sorry for the inquisition

Hi James that looks fab, it's has a great feel, I'm moving in! Did you say you were in a flat? I'm assuming stairs? I get you or your friends or moving men were delighted to lift those appliances up stairs , they were built like tanks in those days.

Sorry I forgot I've not ordered belts for mine but try a car shop as they can find one usually near the size you require just ask them to do one a bit smaller

Welcome James, you have a beauty of a classic dryer there, its not often I say I like the revamped look (the rest of the gang rib me mercilessly about banging on about original features) but in this case it really has worked brilliantly.....love your home as well,

Just dug out the spares list for this dryer, the D3R is rear venting, D3 front venting.

Dont you just love when manuals had headers with "Nomenclature" - meaning list of calalogue parts etc, in them...from another time!!! I do have other Burco manuals when any of you need them, washboilers, drying cabinets, wringers & twintubs.

James hope this is useful, is this to be a working dryer or for show use??
