Busted Duomatic up and Running agian, John is gonna kill me!

Well last year my Deluxe 1958 Duomatic coughed and died. Water, water everywhere and not a dry thing coming out of it. SO thinking I had DHS- dead heater syndrome I searched the world for parts before attempting anything. Parts were found and sat waiting in the wings for over a year.
Symptom one was a tub overflowing with water on the DRY cycle. Open door ,water floods out onto floor, pull wet clothes out and transfer to other Duomatic. First symptom one was overbalance had pulled the wire off the drain solenoid. Fix and repair. Next new Second symptom appeared: No heat in dry cycle thats when I got scared!
Well last weekend I dug into it.
I decided to pull the back off first and start there, smart! Look what I found:

As you can see arcing

on the blower housing just below the blue wire! The contact had failed after 50 years and so the wire was found dangling and arcing agianst the housing at 220V 30 amps! How nice!
But an easy fix see the offending part below:

Now I come to do the

full hail mary load! Off we go: soak OK: wash OK: spin OK: drain OK: and then click into DRY and I feel that warm door glass heating up to dry my clothes in that comfortable Bendix way!

BUT WAIT>>> I come back 30 minutes later to check on things and WHAT do I find, a basement floor FULL Of water again!

I hiked her skirt right up! On the spot!

And there gushing in a pool of water lay the 50 YEAR OLD condenser hose nicely burst and gushing water all through the machine.

Now this is where John E can jump in and say "I TOLD YOU SO!"

Listen for him! ( I owe him that much!)

He warned me to change this hose! But I saw it was still sooo flexible; and it was ORIGINAL; So frugal me! I kept it in!

Now she has a new condenser hose and is humming along again perfecttly.

Yes John you were right all along!

bought Tide HE powder, Mike was right Target has the BEST price on this stuff around! Get some!

Moral of the story

Listen to Johnny and 50 Year old parts will fail! Be prepared!

Wow - it just goes to show you that what may seem to be a huge problem often is not!
Thanks for the advice about the 50-year old hoses - you have now convinced me to replace everything on the 56 GE washer/dryer combo that I am finally starting to work on again!!

Yay Jon, I've been in that spot before with the vintage machines where multiple things go at once, go figure. Or you get one thing fixed and it works for 2 wash loads and then something else completely irrelevant to the previous fix goes wrong!

Your 1958 Duomatic is the prettiest one I've ever seen -- and I've only seen your pictures. Never really saw one in person.

I'm delighted you got her up and going again.

I finally found a Duomatic and am enjoying it. But it's Philco, so it must be one of the last ones manufactured. It does a great job.

I have still not been able to get the motor on my diving bell Bendix to run properly. And now my square Bendix is having major problems -- tub has seized and pump leaks.

Wish I could stay home long enough to work on them -- for that matter, wish I knew what I was doing.

BTW, I found the manual showing the panel removal in doctrine!

Hi all and Eric

That pup is Artemis, my minature english bull terrier! He's not so adorable tonight I can tell you!

He's hit the terrible two's and within an hour he yanked one of my new leather gloves out of my coat and chewed it to shreds.
NEXT he chomped down on the seat belt holder in the truck tonight that was keeping him secure and now that is gone!

Wash, Rinse, Spin, Dry - The Bendixxi Way!!!

Well, 220v & 30amps standing in a pool of water looking for the fault, a braver man than many!!!...Lol, glad to here all safe n sound and working again!!!

Just love the dial controls on the washer dryer, you just are waiting for the record to pop up and the juke box to start playing...FAB.

What programme where you using?? if I had that much foam I would have thought it high sudzing powder!!is that normal for HE tide??

Bull Terriers Rule

Have always wanted one ever since seeing the French film "Baxter", and of course the "Spuds McKensie" dog.

However they are quite rare in our area, and breeders by and large will not sell to those living in urban areas, mainly out of fears their dogs will be used for and or breed to dog fight.

One has to take extreme care when purchasing any bull terrier, as the breed, both full sized and miniature can be prone to certain illnesses caused by inbreeding and the like.

Many cities in Europe have banned all "pit" bull terrier breeds because of gang and dog fighting associations.

Shame really, a bull terrier is one of the most loyal dog breeds around. If they think someone is out to do you harm, they will stake ground. If the person gets a little too close and or sets them off, then WHOOOOOA NELLIE! Things get interesting.

There was a pet store in town a few years ago, selling minature bull terriers imported from Europe, but didn't like the idea of not being able to see the bitch and or sire, so passed.

This issue is being hotly debated on the BTCA club site. BSL ( breed specific legislation) legislation is rearing its ugly head here at home as well.

BSL does not address the real underlying issue of Bad Dog Owners. Under BSL Bad owners can slack by.

All breeds are dogs and can be wonderful or wild. That is the basic truth.

This is the most loving,playful, gentle breed I have yet come across, wonderful with Children. They always shy away from conflict but as you say if backed into a corner they will not back down and they have all the tools.

If one is serious about ownership I suggest a review of the BTCA website and a good read on the breed. I can suggest a few good books.
This is a breed that needs to with their owners most of the day, they can not tolerate being in a crate or left alone for long periods.

I recommnend always always getting your dog from an AKC approved breeder/local club. You usually get to meet a parent and both grandparents so you can see the family tree.
That insures good health, temperment etc.

A wonderful breed for anyone willing to put the time in. You will be richly rewarded for it.
