I purchased a Sumbeam C-30 over the weekend, complete with stand, tray, cream/sugar, It came with both cloth filters and a metal mesh filter with a small basket, where does the basket go? on top or below mesh filter, upside down or right side up or was it just added to the coffer maker, Any help would be great, it really heats that water fast,
Kim

Hey Kim!

Do you have a pic of the basket? My C-30 has the flat mesh filter, although I recall that one of the members here had a C-30 with a basket-type filter. All of the filters are usually inserted in the upper vessel, since the hot water rises to the top, brews, then falls back down. No crunchy coffee here! LOL

Basket

It doesn't fit under the mesh filter as that prevents the mesh filter from seating and sealing,, will have to get digital camera out and see what I can do, Yikes

On top!

This was a double filter. I like this filter. it seems to let the coffee filter faster than the others. I tried the cloth filters as well as paper but I like the filter that you have the best. I LOVE Sunbeam products. The earlier (before c20's+c30's) Sunbeam vac pots are just works of Deco art!!

Enjoy,
Rich

ooops...forgot!

That small basket is called the "New Jet Flow" filter. It would cause the water to, sort of, spray when it shot up the tube. I guess this was better than just bubbling up? :-)

So Rich...

Does this basket filter take the place of the flat filters that came with the C-30? You say that you don't have to use cloth or paper filters with this?

Basket Up or Down?

So the basket just sets on top of mesh filter? its smooth on the outside so I'm assumeing it goes upside down! I'll try it tomorrow morning, Thanks Rich, I'd hoped you'd see the message, How's the Monitor Top doing
Kim

Your welcome!

Enjoy your new filter, Kim I wouldn't be without one!

The Monitor is doing great!! We don't keep it running all the time. Just for parties. It realy is great for the overflow.

The little basket goes on top of the mesh filter with the open end down. In a couple of years, it was replaced by the flat perforated stainless steel plate that sat on top of the stainless steel mesh filter and could be used to hold the cloth filter flat on the top of the mesh filter. I did not use anything on top of the mesh filter if I was not using a cloth filter. The stainless steel mesh filter has 180 wires per square inch and, if it were cotton, would have been considered Percale quality in bedding.

Does this basket filter take the place of the flat filters t

You are correct, Retromom! The added basket was to cause the water to "jet spray" over the grounds. I do notice a bit more agitation, in the top pot, with this added basket. I never use cloth and using a medium grind I do not find any grinds in the bottom.

Sunbeam made a great fuss over their "Jet Spray" system in that it was supposed to eliminate the stirring common with other vacuum pots like Cory or Silex. By "stirring" one means stirring the water and grinds as they bubbled in the upper chamber to ensure an even mix/no coffee clumping together.

Have used Silex,Cory, Nicro and Sunbeam vac pots, and probably out of habit give a little stir each morning when brewing in my Sunbeam C-50. This is probably more out of habit as the pot brews an excellent cup of coffee without my help.

Sunbeam and Silex sold cloth filters to go over their various strainers not so much as to filter but to perhaps make for a smoother cup of joe by absorbing some of the coffee oils. Even today some people will use paper filters inside fine mesh drip filters, even those "gold" variety.

Have a huge display box with lots of Silex cloth strainers, but never really bother. First do not use the Silex pots often since discovering my Sunbeam C-50, next they are hard to keep clean and sanitary. Same with my stash of Sunbeam cloth filters. Silex recommended housewives rinse out their cloth strainers soon as possible after coffee had finished brewing, and not let them sit about too long. Soaking in a cup of hot water to which some Borax was added was recommended to keep cloth strainers clean and "sweet".

Sunbeam Cloth Filters

I find that using the cloth filter in my Sunbeam Vac pots does make a "smoother" cup of coffee. I keep my filters clean with an occasional OxiClean bath. It works very well.

The directions on the filter box said to keep the filters in water in the refrigerator between uses. I do this religiously. I have been using the same filter for over a year now and it seems to still be working just fine. I have only a few in reserve so I am trying to make them last as long as I can. I make at least two pots a day in my Vac pots. I am really spoiled as I can't find another type of pot that makes such a good cup of coffee. I had the Starbucks brand Vac pot for a while but didn't care for the coffee so I sold it on eBay. I think the problem was the filter and the way it was designed was such that I couldn't use any other kind of filter with it. The coffee always tasted a little bitter to me.

Paper or Cloth?

Ralph:

Try using a small stack of about five paper disc percolator filters in your Coffeemaster. If you are not totally comfortable, experiment with a potful of water first. I'm telling you, it really works. I've used them in the C-20 and C-30. I use just one filter in the C-50, and put one in the percolator baskets as well.

Laundress: So, you were supposed to stir the cauldron prior to its drop in the lower vessel? This explains a lot. I have a stainless steel Cory vacuum pot that refused to disengage upon the completion of brewing. After a few choice words and some tinkering around, I noticed that the grounds were packed in so tight (as a result of the vacuum process) that they were almost solid. I see how some stirring prior to the "letdown" would have prevented that uber vacuum!! I'll try it!! Thanks!

As an aside....why was there never a Sunbeam C-40 (or was there)?

Since our C-30's gasket split in half,we have been without vacuum coffee. I bought another C-30 on Ebay (a junker with a good gasket). The new pot arrived yesterday. The new gasket is very soft and pliable, but it stinks! In fact the entire coffee pot stinks. It smells like a barn, complete with hay! Since I only used the gasket, I washed it off before using it, and the coffee this morning had a hint of the "barnyard" odor!
I am letting the gasket sit in some slightly warmed vinegar to see if I can deodorize it. Has anyone else heard of this, off odors in the gasket?

Venus?

Do you get any coffee grounds or like a sludge in your C50 with the cloth or paper filters? With the cloth filters in the C30 the coffee is perfectly clear and not bitter. I will try the paper filters to see how they work in the C30. Yesterday I tried both the cloth and paper filters in the C50 and have had mixed results but in every pot the coffee is a little cloudy and there are some grounds in the bottom. Could it be my filter assembly needs to be replaced or something like that?

I'll let you know how I make out with the paper filters in the C30.

Thanks, Ralph
