I think we should be able to post our own pics in our profiles...may have to talk with Robert about that...

but...my main question is...How do you guys get an album started in here?...i'm having a hard time and can't get it to post...I have to be doing something wrong...can someone help?

I have thought about how nice that would be too, but I wonder how many people would put up a picture of their cat, or their favorite confection, or (heaven forbid) their favorite washing machine (laughs). I think if its a little easier to see the person you are talking to, it might actually cut down on drama.

from a completely selfish standpoint, it would be great for me because I am very bad at connecting user IDs with names and faces. I look at profiles a lot when I am reading, especially when someone refers to another member by name.

maybe it would be ideal to allow members to put up a small "avatar" image, either a tiny pic of themselves or of something they like. I wouldn't mind being able to put a real name on my post as well. Of course, it could all be optional, should you have privacy concerns.

just playing with photoshop...

pantera....for someone who wants to hide, you're quick to be the biggest pulsator here...but you seem "agitated" at times..lol

Martin,

You joined us recently. I am glad you did.

Please, don't make assumptions about why some folks here are open with their personal contact information and others are not.

And, if you don't like what I have to say, do mention it. I'll be more than happy to discuss it with you here.

It's Robert's idea.....

just check out "See it Wash"...go to 1947 GE washer...first video is of Robert showing us his GE washer...but before he begins he asked us to show ourselves in the videos or pics, that it personalizes it more...

It's would just be an option...not mandatory...and even now you still have the option of how much personal info you guys can post...don't be so defensive...I'm sorry if I offend anyone here...some of us are looking forward to wash-ins in our area just to meet many of the great people who share our interest...I do know how important it is for some to keep our lives private...not everyone in my life knows about me and my partner...but to the ones I get to talk openly about this...let's just say it's nice to feel comfortable with people who know and understand and accept...I understand what you go thru...I go thru it too...I really like talking with you guys..some of you are "characters" with a wild sense of humor...this adds to the fun...for me anyway...hopefully we can always talk about this stuff...I always thought I was the only one who would stare at a washing machine in amazement...we are everywhere...because of Robert we are here...will probably never meet him...but I count myself blessed to know of him and the people I get to know because of him...

Martin,

There's nothing wrong with your idea by itself and I am sure you will get to meet many of the nice folks here.

Unfortunately, there is also a darker side to a few people who use this site.

After some pretty strong discussions on controversial topics over the last few years, on more than one occasion, personal information was misused to contact employers and get people fired. Others in the club have had the experience of being attacked with name, address and phone number posted in other internet forums where they were given a "warm" welcome.

In one case, the alias was that of a member's cousin who is a police captain in New Jersey and wasn't pleased to start getting hate mail for being a "N-Lover". When his parents received envelopes with blood spattered letters inside...that particular in-duh-vi-dual got some much needed personal time in a center for people who need to calm their nerves.

Let's leave it at this: Not everyone who reads the wonderful stuff on this site is a member. Not all internet users are necessarily content leaving their disagreements virtual.

Still others (not me) are well known people in the public spotlight who enjoy their anonymity here.

And, finally, many of us remember what happened to LPSG when they changed hands and the new owner brought them public attention on UK TV. It was not nice.

Ultimately, Robert does what he wants. It is 100% his site. And he has run it brilliantly well.

Not really surprised...

...at the strong opinions about this.

fwiw, i wasn't suggesting that the website is flawed or not run well, quite the opposite. i enjoy perusing the site and my only desire was to offer ideas about how to make it better and more personal. i have a hypothesis that if posts were a little less impersonal, perhaps people would realize there is a real person behind the words and be a little less prone to lash out.

pantera, i'd not heard of people from here getting envelopes spattered in blood before. that sounds like big time crazy, and with it happening through the mail, i would imagine has serious consequences. scary that something like that could happen here. we all have our tiffs but stuff on that level is nuts.

as far as privacy concerns, well, everyone has a right to be as private as they want. i am not suggesting that this be MANDATORY, i was suggesting that this be OPTIONAL. you could always join and make your username, email, name, age, and whatnot anything you wanted - which is exactly the same thing you could do now. or you could leave it all blank. no one is suggesting you HAVE to add this information, Robert is kind enough to let you leave it blank if you desire more privacy. i'm not suggesting we change that, and I don't think yogi is either.

i love the searchalator addition and i think its great that Robert built, runs, and pays for this place. my desire is only to suggest things that might be fun and useful. i even cringed as i posted the mockup, knowing i was suggesting something that would create more work for Robert.

i was going to ask what the LPSG was, but then I googled. yowsa. i can see something like that getting interesting, should it get in the wrong hands. hopefully Robert won't sell the site to someone who wants to put us all on television for being part of the washing machine support group!

Hey Eric,

Yes, this is a great place.

Most of the folks here understand the difference between sharp disagreement in the virtual world and going after people at their places of work or their families.

Unfortunately, well, there are a few who really do take it far over the top and do hurt people in the real world.

I figure, well, yeah, OK. Since the blow up over Austin several years ago, there are going to be some folks here who hate me and will always attack me, even tho' most of them don't know that the whole thing began because I don't like racists and am loud about it. They think I'm attacking one of their cherished members and there is no way to talk to them.

I can live with that, just like I live with the silliness that I am "off my meds" because I objected to some nasty things that were said to people who really are coping with some illnesses.

But what drives me crazy is when people actually do lose their jobs and their families are attacked. That's over the top.

And that is why we I am so glad Robert lets us be anonymous here.
My cousin in the UK actually had pics sent to his employers from that site by some yobs in the UK who thought they'd get him in trouble. We have the same screen name!

Enough already, it's a nice day and anytime these topics come up, the usual suspects start making life difficult for all of us.

I'm out of this thread.

If Robert decides to bring back the wallpaper or give us avatars, fine. If not, fine. I just appreciate his patience and willingness to put up with me.

Yogi's just excited to be here. I can relate to how he feels. It's a great environment, and it's often nice to put a face with a name. I'm not saying I'd post my picture, but many sites do have the *option* of an avatar. For me, the occassional picture threads provide the opportunity for those who want to post a picture of themselves to do so. That works for me, and it's probably a lot less work for Robert, although I suspect the bandwidth of a large picture thread can exceed that of permanent profiles with little thumbnails. I'm OK with either arrangement. Nothing is mandatory here other than maintaining a level of civility that doesn't bring Robert into the mix to end up banning someone who can't behave.

Ralph
