I just picked up my parts Flair for the REAL Flair coming from Cleveland. I've been tearing it down and going through all systems , its a very well built Range so I'm gonna try and get this one running as well. It can be the basement Flair!! LOL

Now some Bojack rewired all the burners to ONE LEG Of the 220 terminal AND He/She used Hahdware store vinyl wiring inside the roll out cooktop! It has all melted!! A duh!!!!

Ebay has tons of high temp wire for sale in 14,12,10 gauge - Does anybody know what the original GM spec was for burner wiring on these or the regular ranges as it will be the same???

WOW. It's a wonder they didn't burn their house down, or electrocute themselves! I'm sure you will get it working perfectly though! I think someone told me it's 12 gauge- at least for my 1961 Deluxe 30"- Take a look at my thread "Vintage Frigidaire range.. should I buy? Pros and cons?" I was lucky enough that it didn't need any rewiring though. I really love it and I'm sure you will love your Flair when it's done!

PhilR knows

how to please! He understands Frigidiareism and nicely delivered "parts-in-stock" last week for me. He brought a complete cooktop down for parts. YAY!

Now this project can get underway!

First this Range of ranges will need a through cleaning before rewiring begins- see the photographic evidence for yourselves...

Grease everywhere! Ofcourse as you restorers already know that is a good thing to find as it protects whats under the grease LOL!

Hi Jon

I have always been a Flair Lover. Love the way the doors on the ovens open up.I always loved the style of that range since seeing it on Bewitched as a child. I have had my eye on a few 30" ranges. As a matter of fact there is a 30" in Dennis but they are asking $1,000. It looks beautiful, but right now I can't drive to get it.
Where are you going to install the Flair in your kitchen ? "Who" is going on a sabbatical ?

Just for the record

The Flair stove or other brands imitating it(?) are one of my favorites, too. I see many for sale, but there are some that look better than others. I don't know which models, but not all Flairs look alike. I haven't cooked on a Flair, so...not sure how easy, fun, or what challenges, if any, come with the good looks. These are beasty boys.

Good luck with this Jon, you have your hands full again. :-)

Frigidaire Flair Ranges

Hi Jon, welcome to the lousily wiring Frigidaire used on their ranges, LOL.
Two weeks ago I spent about two hours fixing the burner wiring on a 1962 40" Flair range, it had burned harness connectors and two bad drawer switches, they are all bypassed now and the customer is thrilled to have all the burners working for the first time in about 10 years she said.

Frigidaire Flairs were well built mechanically but the real prize in Hi-Oven ranges with the lift-up gall-wing oven doors are the Hotpoint Hallmarks, from the 1950s through the 80s no company had better wiring in their electric ranges than GE-HP.

14 Ga. wiring is plenty heavy for burner wiring on ANY of a ranges 240 volt circuits, heavier wiring is not as flexible and tends to break where the wiring has to flex when you pivot the elements for cleaning and also for the wiring to the sliding cook-top.

The burned wire connector near the thromostat is because they used too large a wire-nut and they may also not prepared the wires properly before connecting them.

Good luck with your new project, we have lots of used parts for these ranges.

Flair Google Group

There is a whole Flair Group so there are lots of Flair lovers. I have one just waiting for me to build my kitchen.

I have Flair love too...

and have been looking for awhile for the right 40"er to show up... PhilR has one for me, but right now it's buried under and behind 6 billion appliances in his garage stash, aka Le Grand Musee de Freegeedaire Quebecoise.

Phil came down last week to visit us in VT and collect his '60 Pank Deluxe washer, and a good time was had by all!

Jon,

I had missed this thread! I also like Flair ranges, I just wish they would be self-cleaning!  I'm quite thrilled with the 1973 Custom Deluxe you got for me. I  just reinstalled a brand new Heat Minder switch and sensor on it. This range is almost the same as the Custom Imperial model from just a few months before, less the Speed Heat burner. When Frigidaire introduced the Touch-N-Cook model in mid-1973, the Custom Imperial was downgraded to Custom Deluxe and the Speed Heat feature was gone from all 30" models.

Trying the Self-Cleaning function for the first time!  The next step will be to switch the panels with my Deluxe so it becomes white and matches my other white goods in my kitchen!

40" Hallmark Hotpoint Ranges

Hi Phil, I also have the same HP HM range that is pictured in your link. The 40" model is the best designed high-oven range that I have ever seen, it has two 8" three size burners in the front where you can actually use big pots on them [ the right one has GEs seance-a-temp control on it ]

These HP HMs also have the best built-in ventilation I have ever seen on any range, the range top ventilation system actually pulls the steam etc away from big pots on the front elements and whisks it away either outside the house or through an automotive air-cleaner type filter to remove all grease and then through a charcoal filter to remove odors which is located under the cook-top [ the charcoal filter is over 2 feet square and 1/2" thick, it is big enough to actually work ] The ventilation system is also automatically turned on when either broiler is in use, turning the oven selector switch to broil opens a vent in the oven and turns on the ventilation system, so all excess heat, grease, smoke is carried away outside or again through the great filtering system if you have the non-vent model.

I think the only odd thing about HP HM ranges is that both the cook-top and control panel lighting is all incandescent as compared to Frigidaire s florescent lit control panel lighting.
