Calling all MAYTAG experts...

Tonight I looked at a matched set of Maytag's in turquoise.
They cabinets are in pretty good shape and don't look like
they will need much more than a good cleaning and polishing.
They dryer control panel is in very good shape, but the
washer is not quite as good. The paint is worn off the
buttons and the metal surround is a little corroded. I was
hoping to find a set with lighted panels which these don't
have, but they do have the red pilot lights above the dials.

I couldn't test the dryer but the drum turned freely by hand.

We tested the washer by filling it with water from a hose and
then turned it on. It seemed to need to warm up for a minute
as the agitation was slow but then picked up to normal speed
within a couple minutes. It agitated and spun just fine from
what I could see and was pretty quiet. HOWEVER, there is an
oil leak. The inside of the cabinet is clean and shows no
problems but underneath where the belts are, the entire apron
is sprayed with thick oil.

My question is how difficult is this to fix? Is it just a
gasket and are those parts still available? The model #'s
are:
Washer T A606 Serial 309759BM
Dryer T DE306 Serial 671608BM

Can one of you Maytag experts date these for me and tell me
your opinion.

Sounds like a trans seal. The trans must be removed from the cabinet and the o-ring inside the trans must be replaced and refilled with new grease. The upper trans shaft seal should also be replaced. It can be done but I don't know how handy you are. It would be a relatively difficult task for one who has not worked on the Maytag before however if you are handy with tools and have the inclination, I would say it could be done. Rickr had his done professionally. That would be another possibility. Parts should still be available.

Cool....another set of Turqouise 1966 Maytags

I hope you are going to save these they are worth the work that needs to be done to the washer. This was the first year of the 06 series washers and dryers and the last year Maytag offered turqouise (in 1967 it would be replaced by Spanish Avacado). The control panel on the washer can be replaced with another or it can be restored. I know the buttons for my friends A407 with the blue trim panel are still available maybe the ones for yours are too. Good Luck Patrick Coffey

Grab this set, otherwise you'll kick yourself if you don't! The tranny/washer resto will require a bit of work to replace the lower seal, but it is very much worth it!

Here's what I'm having trouble swallowing... the guy wants
$450 for the set. I could see that if they were problem free
but they obviously are not. Or do you think this price is fair
for the color?

I may also have located an avocado set a few years newer that
the seller only wants $85 for. I haven't looked at them yet
so don't know the condition.

Do you think the turquoise set is worth that match more in it's
present condition or should I look at the avocado set? I don't
need 2 sets or I'd consider them both. My garage is filling
quickly and I don't have a basement.

$450.00 is a bit high,seeing they need work,but when was the last time you saw a set?
If you get them,I probably have a console in decent shape.

For some reason I can't get the turquoise color out of my head
either. If they had the lighted consoles it would already be
a done deal. Since it's already a 2 speed machine would the
lighted consoles be interchangable? The MAYTAG logo is also
pretty much gone on the washer, probably from overspray.
Is there a stick on one available. Also - does anyone know
the year these machines were produced based on the model and
serial numbers above? The owner thinks 62, but I see a patent
sticker on the back with dates up to 64. Just curious.

Here is a pic of the other set I may look into. The control
panel and dial colors are different and they look a little
newer with the bigger dryer door. Sorry, don't know the model
numbers of these. Opinions?

my maytag list indicates they were mand in June 1966

The other set is a lot newer,probably mid to late 70's.The dryer is the newer style,evident by the large door,and the gold background on the console.
The 806 console will work on a 606,you can use the 606's timer and switches.I don't know what it would take to make the fluorescent lamp work,probably not much at all.
If you have a service person fix the oil leak,you'll probably have a couple hunderd dollars in the repair. Not much for parts,but a lot of labor.

What would they have cost "brand new" ? If the tops are
in good or better condition (I mean the porcelin enamel)
you'll probly be hard pressed to get such a fine original
matched pair any time soon. They look very nice!!!!!

You can easily replace the heads of the machines with lighted ones when you find them. That turquoise is to die for!

If anyone need buttons for Maytags, get them soon - parts that do not support their cost of manufacture will be soon gone forever! I checked with my parts-supply online ordering system and they have only a scan few sets left and the rest were NLA from 'Tag and out of stock.

I did see buttons available online as well. You are right that those won't last forever and they are surely not turning out any new batches these days.

If you don't, I will since I will be in Portland on Friday! This is a collector's dream, and this is a collector site. To put it in perspective, a 1963 Impala convertible sold then for 2,975. One that still works without rust but still needs restoration sells for between $18,000 and 25,000. One that is perfect sells for 35,000 to 50,000. I will bet you the Maytag pair cost even back in 1967 more than $700. You can't think of a collectable as a comparison to a new machine, you are buying history,and with a Maytag of this era, you are buying history that still works!! Phil

Alright already! I'm just going to try and explain the repairs necessary and what they would cost and see if I can get him down a little on the price. It's bad enough that I dreamed all night about that turquoise agitator going back and forth. Shhhhh, don't tell my Frigidaires.
