I recieved a letter from Whirlpool to extend my warranty. It was for $139.00 for a year. The machine has been off warranty for a few years. I put in a new pump 6 months ago. The old one looked brand new and was not clogged with anything but was dead. Recently, there was no response from the touchpad at all. I unplugged it for a day and now it works fine. Is it worth getting the warranty? They said in the letter that they would replace the unit if they could not fix it.

There are no more Calypsos available, unless Whirlpool has a hidden stash of them, so a replacement machine would likely be a Cabrio.  Majority of mechanical and electronic parts are still currently available but prices are increasing and they're likely to start going NLA in the next year or two.  Extended warranties, like any insurance, are a gamble.  Considering the cost of a touch panel, machine control board, motor board, or pump ... the warranty would be a good investment if something did go wrong.

pass on it..

extended warranties make a lot of money for the manufacturers/ or stores that offer. i was a store manager for a big retailer- you guess, and it was all about the protection agreements and their profits that were made..
take a chance... allocate that same amount of money away for future repairs, or if the situation arises that its beyond repair, take the funds you put away on the insurance and put it toward a new machine. there is so much new technology in the market and more coming. get the best as it becomes available..

every appliane i have bought never had a protection agreement on it. never had issues... if any glitches in whatever you buy will always happen under the origional warranty time frame..
this is my opinion... keep your money..

I agree

Allocate money for future repairs.........This way "if nothing ever goes wrong" you will STILL have the money that you "would have" given Whirlpool.

Some businesses get really pushy about the extended warranty. The salespeople really bug you. Why? Their managers know it's usually 100% profit and really push their salespeople to sell those warranties.

I found a way to deter this! When a salesperson starts pushing the warranty too much, just tell them "Gee, you are really pushing that warranty a lot. Then say:

Maybe I should rethink my purchase of this item?

or

Maybe I'll go buy this item at a store that isn't so insistent on buying an additional warranty.

Shuts them up every time.

I had the GE extended warranty on my Calypso......

several good points about it:

It didn't start until the manufacturers warranty ran out

all money would be refunded to me if I never used the warranty for the full term

after 3 service calls they would replace said machine......

now my machine did give me an error code, service man called to say he ordered the control board parts, GE decided it was too expensive to repair, sent me a check for the original purchase price of the machine..$600.00 plus tax......all I really have to do is unplug the unit once in a while and it works fine.....

so if your fine print is like this it may be worth it, or consider this for your next purchase!

EXTENDED WARRANTIES

I agree with all the comments about how worthless these warranties are however Martin said the machine is currently broken in which case getting it fixed for $139 is a good deal, you may have to wait 30 days however if you take the deal before you can make a claim. Check the fine print.

Nope.....no one came to the house even to check out the machines problem.....in less than 10 days I got a check in the mail.........and like I said, it still works!......but the warranty is still in effect for the dryer, go figure.....

I just got a Kenmore version of this today at Smith's I haven't received it yet it gets here Tuesday. I think it might need a new board. We'll see.
