Can Openers - What's Your Pleasure?

I have been using the same OXO can opener for years. Not saying that it is the same OXO can opener. Seems they start to fail and need replacing almost annually. It is that model that side cuts the can lid instead of piercing from the top down.

Is there something better out there?
Or should I just buy another OXO?

I considered an OXO after reading the other thread about (mainly electric) can openers. But I noticed you have to situate them on the top, I preferred one that you connect to the side and still open the way those OXO's do. So I ended up ordering a Moha Seguro, delivery is supposed to be tomorrow. It's a Swiss product. I hope it lasts much longer than a year.

I have two ancient Swing-Away can openers

One I bought right out of college so it's 40 years old at least. The other is newer, probably 30 years old. Both made in St. Louis MO. It's my plan never to resort to an electric can opener.

I have an OXO manual that I've had for 6 or 7 years, and some cheap thing I got from Kroger, that is also a bottle opener and punch.

I gave up on electric models. The last I had was a Black & Decker; it wouldn't accommodate a #10 can, so I bought a manual.

I just bought a Cutco can opener, very nice quality feel to it.
It is a bit pricey at about $55, but it carries the Cutco Lifetime Warranty

Something similar like this one appeared on the market here. It's a side opener as well. Even our consumer organisation liked it.

The one I have is mounted under my cabinet and out of the way. It is electric black & decker space saver and works quite well. My favorite that I used to have was an Oster one that finally bit the bullet a few years back. Had that one for about 20 years. Not all that many cans that have to be opened that way now, since many have the easy open top with the ring you pull up on like a pop can.

Tupperware!

I love my Tupperware can opener!! I sell them so I might be biased but it's really a great can opener. It's the kind that breaks the seal and lifts the top of the can off. I've had mine for a year and I've never had to clean it...it never gets dirty. Awesome tool.

Nice!! $35 I believe. Well worth the price I think. There's only been 1 can that I couldn't open with it. It was a can of Rotella tomatoes. The top of it was scalloped almost...weird...but it couldn't get a grip on it so I had to use my old one. lol

Since it lays flat on top of the lid, does it have problems with lids with a ring on top? I would prefer those to open with a can opener so you can reuse the lid instead of using the ring.

I haven't tried a can with a ring on it honestly. As long as it doesn't stick up too far I would think it could work fine.

I have always had one of these mounted on the window frame to the left of the sink.

 

Talk about something that works nearly perfectly, you never have to go looking for it and I put it in the DW once in a while.

Sign me up under Swing-A-Way. Had my handheld so long, can't remember when/where/how I acquired it. I think their commercials at the time said "like the astronauts use".

My new Moha Seguro came in. I opened a can of tuna with it. Worked like a charm! No sharp edges, lid can be reused and it doesn't come in touch with the food. It has only a single handle, you first turn it a bit back and then go forward. At the end you turn it a bit backward again to release it. Never a regular can opener for me again!

Well...

Most, if not all, will work out of the package. It is just they peter out 12-18 months down the road. There are several brands posted on this site that I have never heard of before, but will do a little research on later.
