How do you get your cat(s) to let the Christmas tree alone??

Mine climb up the trunk and then jump out of the tree. They play baseball with the ornaments. And, they pull all the lights off the tree and cover the living room floor with strands and strands of lights.

BTW, moth balls and orange peel have no deterrent effect whatsoever with them.

I finally quit putting up a tree. It wasn't worth the aggravation.

heres some tongue in cheek ones!

How to "Cat-Proof" Your Christmas Tree

1. Buy a cardboard box big enough to hold the tree. Paint it red and yellow. Paste pictures of cats playing with toys on the box. Write phrases on the box like: "Giant very expensive cat toy." "Your cat will LOVE it!" "No cat can resist!" "Hours and hours of fun!" "Only $99,999,999.99!"

2. Bring the tree home inside the box, and round up your cats. Say, "look what mommy got you! A giant, really really expensive cat toy! You will go NUTS! I can't wait to see you play with this!"

3. Force the cats to watch you put up the tree and decorate it. If they drift off towards the cardboard box, bring them back to the tree and point at it while saying things like "you had better play with this thing, mommy spent a month's salary on it."

4. When the tree is decorated, wave some branches in their face and shout, "come on and play! Lookee here, the branches move, see? Kitty is supposed to swat at the branches and have lots and lots of fun! Hey, come back here! You come back here right now and play with this tree. See how much fun it is? HEY. I'M TALKING TO YOU. Get out of that box right now, mister. The box is NOT a toy. THIS is the toy."

If you do this with enough sincerity, your cats will avoid the tree like it was a foaming mad Rottweiler. Of course, you'll be stuck with a big ugly cardboard box in your living room all through the holidays, but it can always double as a buffet table.

Oh, Steve, I feel your pain. My otherwise well-behaved cat, The Swede, used to go absolutely crazy-ape bonkers over the Christmas tree. I, too, eventually cried 'uncle' and gave away my tree and ornaments.

Funny thing, though----six years after putting her down, I still don't put up a tree, LOL!

Oh, Steven

That is so true.
My cat gets disgusted because the youngest toddlers in the family want to play with her toys.
This summer she and the smallest dog actually got together and started dragging all their play toys off into the den where the kids aren't welcome.
No joke...
The biggest danger is when cats eat the tinsel from the trees, be careful of that!

re cats and trees

that is so true of cats they just love the tree and play buna of the jungle and jump out at me when I walk by and swat me! but the last couple of years I have out smarted them by making them think its a huge cat after them. I would wait for them to approach the tree and make a huge PSST,PSST and they just would fly straight up in the air and run or the best I could do is find one of those motion detector dogs that bark when they approach. Just sit back and watch the fun!! poor kitty's just ply out of the room and under the bed!! I have not had a problem since. my newest addition is a puppy I got in may so it will be fun this year. she has not seen one, now I have to find a hissing cat and she will run. Mama cat has her bufflwed

Well--

my dear LJ left the tree alone when I put one up.

I have no idea how Boris would act, and right now, I am disinclined to put up a tree this year, although I am going to put up other Christmas decorations, as usual.

Here is an idea. Put the tree in a room with a door, and don't let your cat into the room. Or don't let your cat into the room without you.

..and the giblets perhaps for a nice soup?

I gave up having a tree with my cat.

However I still have my tree-top ornament. A rubenesque ballerina. See, the first ex-husband called my next partner the fat ballerina. (frustrated dancer with weight issues).

How interesting it was to have a fat balleina ornametn gited to us and put on the top with a tree up her... ahem. What can I say? The mext partner would not let me say "NO!" He thought it was a fabulous gift. OY VEY! I chose not to explain it to him.

Anyone ever try the Hartz brand "No" spray on the tree? It's a great training aid. Here is a version in the link by another company.

Somebody is having a lot of fun with Photoshop....

While we don't have cats, my sister does. I have noticed that if the cat in the tree is heavy enough, the tree will lean, and quite possibly fall over. It is a lot of fun to watch a fully decorated tree all nice and lit up swaying from a cat near the top!

Steve, I would try stripping the insulation back a few inches here and there on both wires on the light strands. I am sure that once your cat gets a "charge" once or twice, he will get the idea that it's not such a good idea to climb the Xmas tree after all. Of couse his fur might need grooming after he gets out of the tree though.... *grin*
