DADoES comment about keeping his phones charged and our dependence on electricity got me thinking...

Like most people I don't have a landline. I depend on my cell. However, I have a back up phone in case my cell phone breaks when there's no quick replacement to be had. I also have a pay-as-you-go phone that uses a completely separate network. Along with that I have batteries that will allow me to charge my phone for at least a week.

However, nearly everyone I know has just one cell phone. A couple people have MAYBE one extra battery or power pack. They're all S.O.L. if they're away from a working outlet for more than 3 or 4 hours beyond what they've planned.

My job requires me to reachable by e-mail or text and I can't predict when or where I'll have a chance to recharge my phone.

Maybe I'm the one who's different?

Or do you guys have ways to keep your phones working if you're stuck somewhere or the power fails and you can't recharge as usual?

In the current city place in Montreal, we don't have a landline - believe it or not there are still working pay phones just around the corner if we need one.  In Ogden, however, we still keep a landline just in case.  Not sure what we will do when we move out of Montreal to a more rural setting...  We'll need an internet provider, so perhaps we'll wind up with a bundle.

I'm considering

A bundle thru my cable carrier.. cable tv, internet, than separate bill for landline and cell is costing me over 200 a month. I did drop the landline a few years ago but my teenage daughter is on a monthly heart monitor so often and I have to send the signals thru the phone and it has to be sent thru a landline. I doubt cost will be much different when I go with a bundle but sending out monthly payments will save time and a stamp.

I have a landline since I have DSL Internet access so I'm not cell dependent. I also have a a OBI VoIP box to work with a Google Voice number too.

As for redundancy on the cell, I even have a backup phone, swap in the SIM card and its good to go! I can charge from AC mains, the car, 12v back up power or a portable generator.

If things get really bad, I have a couple dozen radios in the basement that could likely contact someone too.
