AHHHHHHHHhh

So, got home with a car full of stuff to unload.  Was parked outside in back of house, went out for the third batch and what runs out from under the rear door of the car?  Yes, you guessed it, what a appeared to be a baby or young chippee.  He stopped, looked, saw me, ran back under the car, then ran back out and into a burn pile of branches and scraps.

So I stood watching to see where he'd go.  He quickly ran out the other side of the pile, over some potted plants (leap, leap, leap), then he saw me move and ran back into the pile.  I thought he'd be under there a while.  Nope, he ran back out, over the pots, then made a dash for the house.  The door was open, so I thought he'd aim there, but no, wen't to one of the holes I took a picture of the other day.

So I thought, oh great, it's in the house.

Then, before I could finish that thought, I saw it , or one of similar size, run out from the side of the house and jump into a tree.

Either there are secret tunnels under the house, which I can believe, or there was another chippee up to  no good as well.

There no evidence to suggest he's in or under, the house.   Also, the trap hasn't gone off today, and there's no indication anything was near it.

Guys, chippees, may be cute, but essentially they are rats with a happening suit, a manicured tail, and a vegan diet.

From the comments, it sounds like this will be a busy year in several places, for chippee infestations.

rats will also live in holes in the ground outside.

Well, mine is still around.  My family room has a high cathedral ceiling, and I have a few ( well a lot.. ) of big plants in there.  One of the Ficus trees is about 10' tall, scrapes the ceiling.  Adjacent to it I have a bar.  found a collection of droppings on top of the ice bucket,  looked like black BBs.  I guess he liked the tree.  I was taking the plants out for the summer ( very late...) and the thing made a dash for it again.  I have it trapped in a room again with an open window, next time I go out I will be picking up a trap.

I have a cat that in his younger years was quite the squirrel eliminator. I actually observed him once catch a squirrel out in front of the house, carry the squirrel between his front legs (like a lion with a gazelle) with the squirrel chirping the whole time, and then drag it under a car in the courtyard. Took about a minute for the chirping to stop, finally, thankfully. I don't care for squirrels because they devastate the garden, but that was a bit much even for me...

He also used to bring parts of his catches into the enclosed patio, and a couple of times into the house. I guess he was proud of it. But he's too old to chase squirrels now and prefers to sleep about 23-1/2 hours a day.

For that matter, rats can be kind of cute, too!

But they are the cutest when they live in a cage, have a name, and came from a pet shop. They are MUCH less cute when they just sort of move in...

I used to catch so many

in my Rat zapper then bought several dif sized " Hava hart" traps..
course I made sure that they went on a permant vacation. Cause the creepos will keep coming back..
when you take them somewhere else you are just forcing the problem on someone else.....
Just like all the idiots that unload their unwanted cats and dogs into the "country". RAH....
YEll they are just like rats, mice .. I wouldnt hestate to konk them in the had.. esp if you are a gardener Cant stand the voles either. Ever see a flying sqyirrel in your house. It aint purty. Heck they can get off even the toughest glue traps....
Lazy KITTY kat, outdoor only finally left one for me. to see... He has did nothing about the mole THOUGH...
He picks mostly on birds, the coward. LOL

Now I'm in business

A while back I saw a video on the magic trick to bating snap traps.  It's using half a softened tootsie roll or Mary-Jane peanut butter chewy, and working the warmed candy into the trap, and letting it cool.   As an extra feature, I add a dab of peanut butter to give the extra smell that lures them in.

  On the chippee front-

Worked outside most of the day Saturday.  Had several  chippee sightings.  I saw the same young chippee (looked the same anyway) as the other day, run under my house, in two different places.

Plus, I set up a trap in a cement enclosure to catch these parasite OUTSIDE.  I was working 20' away from it and chippee ran into it.  Unfortunately, I had a mere mouse trap in there and chippee tried to eat off it.  I was working and heard "CLICK !".  I was excited, then I saw chippee quickly exit the box, stop, and I think he was in the trap, but got out, and was counting his blessings ( I swear I saw his two front paws together in prayer position as he was looking up at the sky), then ran under the house.

I've since changed that to a rat trap  (he-he).  And left a tray of mouse poison.  (pictures soon)

I'm surprised- The first chippee sat in the back for a couple days and nothing touched it.  I took it to the front of the house and put it on the sidewalk.  Still there.  I was mowing the grass and it was still there, though its pretty flat and black.  There were a lot bugs eating at it.

   On the mouse front-

Time of death= 12:20 am.

Was sitting at my desk and heard the wonderful, joy-filled sound of a mouse trap CLICK.   Went into the other room and proudly I saw it.

  On the garden front-

It's electric fencer time.  I'm re-setting up my electric fence Sunday.  It has served me well.  It's fought off deer, cats, dogs, rabbits, and probably drunk, nefarious  people.

Well pictures are predictable from me.  I was posting pictures from the beginning of this thread and will no doubt continue.  In fact, a majority of my AW and VL responses have some type photo or link.

However, today, it's 90 degrees and humid.  (gasping for breath).

We'll see what successes I have in these conditions.

The cement enclosure with traps inside.  Setting the traps outside will hopefully keep from having the rodent inside.  I used some old cement blocks and a cover to keep from getting wet.

Garden stuff-  If these start to get damaged or missing..... but soon will be protected with electric fence.

Look for holes with a well worn traffic pattern.   This can be a good indicator of where they're coming in.

A different style plastic trap placed near a opening I've seen the chippee going in.

dead mouse from last night and chippee from last weekend.

Is this Theodore ?

I've got to say, those Jawz traps are awesome easy to set and empty.  No worries about losing a finger.  It's like operating a clothes pin.  Both when setting, and when releasing the spoil.  No need to touch the vermin.

I put the mouse out here, but it, is gone.  I hope something made a good meal of it.  That's recycling.

My flower about to open.   Small strawberries growing.

But I'm scared.  Before I found this one, I was coming around the corner of the house and I saw, in a big tree, about 10' up, a small chippee.  It saw me, but was in no hurry to scamper off.  I swear it had a gun under one of it's paws.

I think this band of (BAD, yes Bad)  vermin choral singers is mob connected.  I fear I may be next.  OH NO !

I think I've got the trio....

but I know it's not that easy.

I actually felt sorry for this one.  Jawz really did it's thing.   But this one didn't die instantly, and got pinched.  I hate to see an animal suffering.

When I found the trap, it was about 8' from where the trap was set. And when I went to pick up the trap, it was still slightly alive.  poor thing.  Did the most humane thing and put it out of its misery by cutting off the head.  No need to show the pictures, but it didn't just slice off.  These little buggers are stringy.

I guess it's good news.  The second one I put on the sidewalk- it wasn't gone the next day, but the day after it was.  That was also the day I found another pile of bio-material, this time in the front yard.  I think it's from a cat, that I hope ate the chippee.

Whateva.....  have to say again.  These Jawz traps really are awesome.  I didn't think those plastic spikes would hold but they sure do.  And so easy and safe to set and eject the spoil.  No need to touch the vermin.

Haven't seen or heard anything inside the house.

It seems the busy time of day for these chippees is earlier in the day.
