Spied these at a local supermarket chain -- "Food Club" is their store brand, apparently originating with a company in Illinois.

I think Launderess has mentioned European chlorine bleach tablets, but I couldn't find the thread.

Anyway, for $1.99, figured it wouldn't hurt to have some. I don't use bleach much and these might have a longer shelf life than liquid.

Whoops

...didn't see the expiration date till I got home!

The print on the back is tiny, but it does say "Made in France" at the very bottom (not visible here). Ingredients are "Chlorinated bleaching agents, sodium bicarbonate, inert fillers, chlorine stabilizers."

I wonder if this is the first dry bleach on the US consumer market since Beads-o-bleach?

Though not always easy to find

Dry powdered chlorine bleach is around in the USA. Lever sells small boxes meant for coin/vend laundry use but there are places that will sell the stuff to anyone.

Eau de Javel is not really big in France for laundry. Indeed it often is sold in those little sausage type containers fabric softener used to come as in the United States. However the chlorine bleach in France is usually always with the cleaning products, not laundry. For some reason French households don't mind chlorine bleach for cleaning their homes, just don't want it for laundry. Well one knows the reason, but still.

Cotton is a relative new fiber to France as much of Europe. Previous the main textile for "linens" was linen, which is very badly harmed by chlorine bleaches.

For some really powerful dry chlorine bleach commercial laundries have access to "reclaim" versions. That stuff is meant to deal with laundry so badly stained that the next stop would be the rag bag or whatever. So exposing it to strong chlorine bleach cycle falls under "nothing ventured, nothing gained"... *LOL*

Those little bleach tablets are also great to take on camping trips or if you are into "survival" type things. In the proper dosage you can use the chlorine tablets to "disinfect" water one is unsure of to make it safe for drinking.

Thanks, L.

You always have the skinny!

I know my nephews (Eagle Scouts) have mentioned the chlorine tablets for camping, but I imagine you'd have to be careful about the dosing.

Tried one tablet in a load of white sheets today, and it didn't put holes in anything. So there's that.

Bleach Tablets

We have had them in Australia for about 5 yrs White King make them, in Regular & Lemon scent. Can't tell difference between the smell. I use 2 in a 7kg top loader. They are slightly effervescent when u throw them in the wash. They are good for cleaning the toilet too!

Chlorine Bleach Tabs

I bought them at Publix ONE TIME (loved them) and then they were no longer available. I have looked in every grocery store, hardware store and mass discount store since and NOTHING!!!
