Christmas laundry?

Automatic Washer - The world's coolest Washing Machines, Dryers and Dishwashers

Help Support :

Hey sudsman....

Question for you.

I worked in a large nursing home laundry some years ago. I love to see different wash formulas for different loads. I still can remember every program code, and the actual formula cycle for each. Upon reading yours, I noticed that you use long wash times, AND a really long bleach time. Why so long?

Isolation used to be our longest and most aggressive program. Max wash time was 10 mins. It had 3 flushes, a break suds, suds, rinse, bleach, 2 rinses, extract, rinse, and softener/sour rinse. Normal wash times on programs were 6-8 mins, 10 max. Bleach rinses were only 6 mins, 8 for isolation.

I am just curious why you use longer wash and bleaching times, and I also noticed cold rinses....I was very shocked. Nothing, with the exception of the household washer at work, ever got rinsed in cold water. Just curious....I love industrial laundries!

By using a bit longer wash and bleach times I can use less chemicals and save a considerable amount of money over a time. Yes the formulas could be shorter but I would need to use about 30% more chemicals than I now use. As is my chemical bill runs more than 50 K a year 30% is a big savings.

Rinses are cold as a cost cutting measure. I do use a split rinse on the sour/soft bath to raise the temp of the load for better extraction. Here we really dont care if we get more wrinkles from the higher last rinse temps as the work is flatwork ironed anyway. We have done a number of test with hot and split rinses vs the cold and found no differnece at all. If fact the warmer rinse loads we tried tended to have more suds at the final rinise that the cold rinse loads did. Also by running the loads a bit longer we have a rewash ratio of less than 1/2 % most plants this size will avg around 2% Always glad to answer any questions you have. If I dont know or not sure I will say so. 40+ years in the laundry and still learning.

Awesome responce so far guys:D I love hear other peoples laundry habits!

Well boxing day for me consisted of washing and drying new clothes i got for christmas & i'm just running a bath robe through on 60degrees in the AEG in the house! Highly annoying as i want to use the bosch but its to damn cold. When i move my next house has an ajacent garage and i'll be kitting it out so i'll have the choice! :D

Best wishes to all and keep em coming! If anyone took pics please feel free to add them:D

Thanks suds....

Everything where i used to work got warm rinses, even the final. Even the delicate program was all warm, straight thru. Rinses were always clear, with the exception of the suds down the glass during final extract. Which I assumed was the sour/softener being extracted out. Most loads did not have interim extracts. Only heavy loads like towels, pads, bibs, and isolation had interim extracts. Being a nursing home, personals were washed constantly. Usually in 75 pound loads. Always separated into light/whites, and dark. But even every day clothing was heavily soiled, and they had very through programs. The ecolab man who programmed the Milnors, thought personals meant clothes like you and I wear everyday. Not ones with bodily fluids, etc in them. The darks were coming out smelling like urine, so they added a second wash, increased the break and suds bath to hot, and added a rinse. Lights never were an issue because of the bleach bath. Of course, everything was rinsed to hell and back, too.

Where i worked was small compared to yours....there was a household Speed Queen FL, an old used wascomat, 2-90 pound Milnors (my favorites), and then a 120 pound Milnor. The housekeeping director really loved Milnors, due to reliability. In fact, they all ran 16-18 hours a day for over a year while another local nursing home was having their laundry remodeled. They "rented" our place, and as dayshift was leaving, the outside place was coming in and sorting. Never a major breakdown, except for a belt or something. Two of them were installed in 1991. Longest running program for us was 68 mins, and that was isolation stuff. We did have pretty quick turnover of linen...and only a staff of 4 women. I just filled in when they were slammed, and I always ran washers, cause that was that hardest job in there!

I could yap about this crap for hours....lol.

Milnors are fine machines always have been.

the only problem is that with anything larger then a 75 or 80 lb machine you start having problems with the ladies being able to unload the machine.. Esp. the 90 and 125s Thermal Blankets and sheet can actually hurt someone trying to unload them. At the old St Joseph laundry I had 2 200 and a 125 Milnors with the rest of the mix that ran for 6 years with out even belt adjustments.. and they were run hard too. 16 hr days for them. My favorite was the old 100lb hard mount there are still some running in this area.

Xmas Washing

Of course I did one load on Xmas morning. The dog's blanket. Cheer Bright Clean Formula HE.

How could anyone get through the day without at least one wash load?

Why would you not be *allowed* to do laundry or anything els

Out of respect for the holiday.

Just like no work is done on the Sabbath, or that one wears their best on Sunday goes to chuch and has "Sunday" dinner.

A way to mark the day as "Special".

BTW resting on Saturday is though to be the most productive/effective day of rest based on the phases of the moon. There is a methid to the "Mazdness" only we tend to forget the "why" sometimes...........

I tend not to do laundry on Sunday or the holidays, but that is because it's done during the week and on Saturday. My focus on holidays tends to be the kithcen. My dinner parties normally include two meats, two starches two vegetables and two salads. There is something for everyone whether they are lacose-intolerant, diabetic, vegeterian or just plain picky!

Besides I d'ont want my dryer I(vented) sucking though it and the clean laundry ethnic food odors being mosty stinky onion and some garlic.......... *LOL*

Thanks for the pics. I would work in a commercial laundry in a heart beat, if the pay was not such crap. Thanks again for the pics and info. I could go on and on about the machines and programs. :)

a good supervisior

in most plants around this area make up to 800 a week a CLLM can make up to 75.000 +a year at the right hospital. At one I had living quarters (which were like a 4 star hotel) all my meals and a car. In was in the Drs living quarters and was given daily maid service and a privite dinning room with the BEST food.

Well shit....

We do not have laundry plants around here, really. Unless you count Aramark laundry service. I thought the money would be crap, but what u just listed is a whole hell of a lot more than I currently bring in. :)

And toggles....trust me, I can load and unload with the best of them. ;)
