Classic 70's Simpson dryer.

Wow! A full size Simpson dryer that would be a match to Leon's Simpson from 1974.

Never knew just how heavy a shirt could be 'till my horse fell on me in 2000. For the longest time, I could not bend over. Then, for an even longer time, bending over hurt more than anything was worth.
Anybody know how old this is? Looks very solid. Simpson...aren't they related to Maytag somehow or other...Maytag bought their stuff (or vice versa)? If they still exist and are still in business, could they be a resource to avoid the Maytag debacle in the US?

Simpson and Maytag are not related...i wish they were! In the 1960's, Simpson used similar technology like the Maytag helical drive principle, which continued into the 1970's. Simpson were bought out by Email who eventually have been taken over by Electrolux.

The Simpsons of today are nowhere near the rugged machines they once were....they use a reversing motor to agitate rather than a proper steel drive gearbox.

This dryer in the picture is about a 1974 model, i have the matching washer below. I would get this, but do not have the room at the moment for it.

Thank you Leon, I guess I was just dreaming. Since the Australians have had to invent so much on their own, I was kinda hoping...
Electrolux has such a mixture of really good and truly dreadful you just never know.
Very ironic somehow that the machines of our youth would turn out to be more reliable 20, 25, 30...40 years later than the newest stuff...counting from the day you buy a new machine...

I remember quite some time ago, seeing some Appliances having Simpson-Sears on them, as well as possibly even some TV's and Stereo's. Weren't they something that was Sold up in Canada?

Reliability and what Choice thought

Hi Kevin,

The new electrolux machines are light and full of plastic. However they still seem to last out about 7-10 years. The biggest problem they have now, is the cheap electronics failing. The mechanical timer models of even 2 years ago just keep chugging away.

Choice bagged these dryers bigtime. A model slightly early than this, had temps that got up to 205F and with no low heat option. The previous model had no door switch, you had to stop the timer to stop the tumbling. However it was the only large capcity dryer that was available, except for probably the Westinghouse, but that was slightly smaller.

Since that design of dryer, there hasn't been a domestic large capcity dryer available on the Aussie market. Maytag and Speedqueen are about it.
