Late last fall I picked up a vintage wrought iron patio set. I was willing to pay as much as $7.00 for the set. The set includes the table, base, umbrella and three chairs with padded seats. I got the lot for $ 4.50 and a set of dishes thrown in.
The umbrella is in very good shape for its age. What is the best way to clean it and keep the fabric from drying out?

Cleaning a patio umbrella

It looks pretty close to what was being sold in the Eatons catalouge in 1972.
The set is made in Montreal.

What is the material it's made of? Vinyl or Cotton Duck Canvas. We had one at our last house that was 100% Cotton Duck. We washed it with some Dawn and water and just rinsed it really well and rinsed it well with the outdoor hose. It was the best umbrella we ever had.

If yours is Cotton I suppose you could sew in a patch and coat it with a waterproofing agent.

As far as vinyl goes, I am not sure.

A friend in Florida had a fabric umbrella that was getting dirty when one night a storm blew it into the pool. He fished it out the next morning and when it dried, it looked like new.

For the holes, if it is vinyl, maybe some silicone sealer would work or that stuff in a can that they use to seal almost everything in TV ads.

repair tape

Try a local RV or camper supply store.

They sell a vinyl tape for just such repairs to a camper
or motorhome awning. It's UV-coated to resist yellowing.

I've used it on my own camper and it works well.

Be prepared for a little sticker shock tho, it will
be more than you paid for the umbrella.

Sunmaster umbrella

I bought mine at an estate sale, they had two but sadly the other had been sold and taken. Whoever the person was who bought the other had taken the wrong pole and the one that was left wouldn't fit mine. I had to use a pipe! Oh well... It still looks great!

Umbrella Brand

rpms - Brian ...you payed too much at $4.50 and only dishes. No car? lol!

Will - that's a shame that happened - you got it set up though.

So...no brand name on Brian's umbrella and Will, you have a Sunmaster Umbrella(not a Sunbrella)?

Thank you.
