Cold Water Temps........

probably should have started this a few days ago....but with these freezing temps, and even a few places loosing water to freezing pipes and such.....just wondering what your outside temp is for your home and what the incoming COLD water temp is?....

right now in South Jersey, its 12 degrees outside....and water from the well is 37 degrees......I am 5 degrees away from it freezing solid!....

as I was running around the shower trying to get wet, I am used to setting the knobs for my perfect temp, but finding I had to increase the HOT side to make it comfortable...

Zero degrees here; water from kitchen tap (on an outside wall) is 43 degrees. I've been leaving the cabinets open under the sink; leaving the dishwasher open.

Not seen a lot in Minnesota, but my furnace and water heater (both natural gas) are in the tuck-under garage. That means the garage is heated and air-conditioned, which is nice, but I also have to make sure it never freezes in there!

This happened to the people who owned the house before me: They pulled out of the garage one winter morning, pressed the button, and the door started to close. They drove off. Something caused the door to jam, and it went back up. Pipes froze, the furnace and water heater were ruined. I always sit in the driveway til the door is completely closed.

The garage has a sheetrock ceiling, and I worry about whether heat is getting to the pipes between the sheetrock and the kitchen floor. So far, no problems. The garage got down to about 52 degrees when it was -25 a few days ago, which made me nervous.

Hope you guys returned to normal. I'm glad we have heat tape on our rooftop water lines and constantly circulating hot water.

Checked this morning. According to my truck, the outdoor temp was -4 when I left the house. The cold tap in the kitchen was reading right around 43F.

Few days ago it was staying in the high single digits during the day, right now it is 33F. The cold water water temp from my faucet is 39F.

Mine is right about 48F today.  We've been cold but sunny this week and only patchy snow-cover.

Cold tap water

now is about 47F. Well water.

Outdoor temps are back to seasonal norms for this area. 30F right now.

But, the cold lows, -14F, over the last weekend and start of this week
coupled with the winds took a toll.

Got a call last evening about 5:30PM from Mom's assisted living facility
and she was going to be evacuated due to a water line break. A sprinkler main
in the ceiling had frozen and finally broken flooding 15 or so apartments
in her wing of the building. Her apartment was the farthest affected from
the break and only had some wet carpet. Where the break occurred, the plaster
ceiling fell in the bedroom area of that apartment. She and a few others may
be able to return tomorrow afternoon or Saturday. The rest not until later next week.
So for now she is staying with my brother. Others that could went home with family.
Those that couldn't were moved to a nearby nursing home for the duration.

So goes weather in Ohio!

With temps these low, I can only hope no one on this site is mad enough to launder in anything but straight cold water at this point. Just now, I can already imagine the results....

Although *tempered* cold water (As in, FL heated to 30ºC/86ºF) might be okay.

The tempering valve on the cold water raises it to between 78-80F. It takes a surprising amount of hot water to warm up water that cold. It feels like the "Cool" water setting on the 1958 machines that offered it.

I wash my gym clothes in cold using a sport wash. I washed these last week and in part of the fill hot water was taken in too. About 10 minutes into the wash the heater also came on. I believe the washer keeps cold water no lower than 65F.

After taking my shower this morning, and drawing 6½ gallons to fill the humidifier, my cold water temp is currently at 43°F.  The temp is -12°F with a windchill of  -27°F.

Zero outside right now. The cold water from the kitchen sink is 39 degrees. Oh wonderful.

Have Not Measured Actual Temp

But have not taken to "blending" hot and cold water when doing the wash for rinsing. Water coming out of the taps on "C" feels like nearly freezing, which cannot give good rinsing results IMHO.

With the way this winter has been treating us, given how cold it's been and for so long, I've often wondered if the rinsing is effective enough .
