And there should be CLEARLY marked signs telling stupid people (the masses) not to overstuff the machines without sorting and if they do... We all know they will disregard the labels and signs. They won't listen to them! And don't even think about confronting them telling them they're gonna break the equipment, not to mention ruin their clothes. You would think people would know better than to abuse expensive machines. If it takes me up to 8 machines to wash properly assorted laundry, fine! So be it! I'm not the problem if they get mad at me for "taking all the machines".
Do the masses think we're really that stupid when it comes to laundry? We will not be fooled. I can go to a laundromat to observe the behaviors of how most people overstuff the machine to the point where they break, and then they have the audacity to cuss the place out.
If I owned a laundromat, I'm only gonna give them 1 warning, then if they do it again, I will kick them out. If they do it a 3rd time, I'll have them banned permanently. If I use a machine properly in the home, then I will give the commercial machines the same proper treatment as I would at home. That means using all 3 most common temps, proper amounts of laundry detergent, bleach, and fabric softener when desired, leave the doors open and wipe down any seals. I have high standards to not only my laundry, but also the machines themselves.

What gets me is that people think they know how to do laundry when they shove every single thing into a machine then force the lids or doors shut by slamming them. They put way too much detergent and softener, even bleach. SMH!
 
And despite the old sitcom . . .

 

. . ."men can't do the laundry without flooding the house" schtick,  it's the men who are scrutinizing the detergent label and measuring like chemists in a lab while the ladies dump in a glug of this, a splash of that and a heaping dash or two of the other like an old family recipe.
 
I must admit... I've learned a LOT from the internet over the years... IN the past, I was not as good at doing laundry as I am now...but I always sorted and never over stuffed...I don't EVER remember using cold water. Always at the very least warm...

but with all the information at our fingertips, you would think this wouldn't be an issue in 2023... but it seems like there are even more bad laundry habits than ever. Maybe people just think machines and detergent are so fantastic they don't even need to think about it?

I actually read manuals, even on equipment that seems as if it should be straight forward to use.

Scary thought, if people think washing machines are so fantastic they don't even need to think about using them, what other machines do they think that about? Trucks, chainsaws, tractors?
 
I've gone to a local laundromat a number of times and my experiences is that I almost never see any machine loaded to much more than 1/2 its capacity. Note this is a laundromat that is smart enough to not mess with top loading machines. The majority are all hard mount Dexter's. I routinely see their largest front load machines running less than 1/2 a load and crazy folks paying $10 a cycle!

I've never paid attention to the wash temp, or to how they sort, but they sure don't know how to load a commercial front load washer!

That just drives me crazy. Or they'll put too much laundry detergent and fabric softener or not enough in the machines or in the wrong compartments. When I do use the laundromat, I make sure I add laundry detergent and fabric softener correctly. Fabric softener doesn't ruin the machine if people would just follow the recommendations.
 
The biggest issue I used to see was using WAY too much detergent. I saw one lady use 5 times more than I would use in a top loader. It was an older speed queen front loader the had a pre wash, main wash, 3 rinses with a spin in between each rinse. The last 3rd and final rinse was still billowing suds. YIKES!

Using that much detergent will result in itchy clothes not to mention they will smell like detergent as well. Some people want that ‘fresh’ smell if you will but using more detergent than you are supposed to won’t get you the results. Just use the correct amount of fabric softener or dryer sheets for that load and you won’t have any issues.
 
We had Speed Queen top loaders in the dorms for the first couple years I attended college. I didn't notice many problems with the way other people used them other than the traditional college student over-stuffing and thinking cold water is the answer to all of life's problems, ya know the drill. But the machines were rarely broken, they didn't smell or anything, so whatever people wanna do.

I think it was my junior year when they renovated a lot of the dorms and at that time they got rid of the top load washers and put in front load Speed Queens. An email went out letting students know that starting that year they would need to bring high efficiency detergent and also provided some other tips on using the new machines. It was apparent that most students disregarded the message because it wasn't long before those washers started suffering breakdowns and they also stank to high heaven. I imagine it was mold city up in there, so I quit using the dorm's laundry facility and started taking my clothes to my then girlfriend's house to wash every two weeks. was a pain to do that but I couldn't get past the thought that those front load washers had become gross due to neglect.

When I was living in a dorm there wasn't enough dryers to keep up with the washers, so you'd have to wait for a dryer. As soon as a dryer became available someone would grab all their sopping wet clothes out of the washer before it had time to finish its final spin, and throw them in the dryer, multiplying the problem. It was a long time ago, but looking back to reply #32, it does seem as if the coeds were the biggest offenders.

Speaking of using detergent and softener compartments, and being able to read, when I was looking at reviews for certain top loaders a common complaint seemed to be that the laundry powder didn't fully dissolve when you put it in the detergent compartment. I used one of those machines, and it clearly said on the compartment "liquid detergent only", and the instructions and manual told you to put powdered detergent in the bottom of the tub before filling. I thought it was especially funny on the youtube videos where the reviewers are trying to sound so professional and knowledgeable.

Yesterday, I ran the front load Speed Queen Horizon empty with just bleach and hot water, or so I thought. I did notice that the hot water cooled down. I put it on hot, heavy, and normal. I suspected the people didn't wipe down the seal or leave the door open.
 
Greg luxflairguy just seems to have a blind hatred of certain members here to the point that he will jump at any pretense to take offence to try to get someone banned.

While I'm sure Greg thinks he's the epitome of what it means to show courtesy and respect for other members with statements like "SHUT THE FUVK UP!" and "You are disgusting and I'm blocking you from now on!", he can't seem to get his facts straight. Much the same as another member here who complains about others not being factual when he can't back up what he says. It's easier to hurl invective and try to get someone banned than to disagree in an intelligent and polite manner.

So Greg claims to have Jerome blocked, yet somehow he's still taking offence at what he supposedly said. Strange.

It’s interesting how luxflairguy says Jerome is being sexist and so forth and taking offense to it, but the most offensive thing is how he basically told Jerome to shut the f-bomb up.

In fact, lucflairguy snapped at me awhile back since I mentioned why I don’t have a membership on here since I like to devote that money towards that machines and such and got a response with him saying “pay up or shut up”

Luxflairguy, if you want people to respect you, treat them the way you wanted to be treated. By snapping at people will just cause them to snap back at you. It’s interesting when Boomers such as you complain on how younger folks don’t respect anyone etc. but yet seem to be on a high horse and like to lecture people and have a attitude and when people my age say “Enough is enough, I am tired of this nonsense” then get pissed off since it’s the truth. That’s not an opinion or fact, it’s the TRUTH.

Plus if people such as you claim to be wise and have wisdom, then why go about it this way? Not very wise to be combative, conniving, and condescending in my book.

As both a casual observer and a participant I regret to say this has become the internet as a whole in the last 4 to 5 years. In varying degrees I'm seeing it in almost every chat forum, social media site and discussion feed. Claim to be some type of senior authority or of unmatched moral superiority, fling ad hominem personal attacks, illicit a defense response back, then report/ask mods user be banned on the basis being belligerent all while flashing a right minded demeanor.  

 

How or why that is I have theories, I'll also let the experts figure it out, however I think the rest of us need to stand up to it in a way that keeps the internet open for everyone rather than letting a handful of angry individuals curate what everyone can read, see or post.

 

@maytag85: Well said. Nothing more I can add other than stand up for others but at the same time don't get emotional. Being upset is their goal. Misapplied behaviorism is a form of copium for these folks. Ruin the person's credibility or character, then make them mad/upset/emotional enough times developing an aversion to the point they stop participating in the forum. Don't let them have their way.


 

Let me be the one to say you are real, you deserve to have a voice, and I genuinely like you. And of course there is your talent which I love

27 was my post and I don't think I said anything sexist whatsoever. Even went back and read it a couple times to make sure because it's been a couple weeks ago since I posted on this thread. I think you might have me confused with another poster.

This thread has gone this this many responses, that's a lot of abused public laundromat equipment, but now how did this turn to automaticwasher.org member abuse?!

 

Seems as though whatever laundromat I'd been to--a current chain/franchise in my area known as Skylar Laundromat, which recently opened a new location in part of a former record store housing a couple pet care-oriented businesses, maybe I've gots to go to and try someday...

 

Anyway, people around where I live might evedentally treat laundry equipment here a lot better, I'd seldom encountered a machine, washer or dryer which would not work properly, work at all, or just be tagged out of order or out of service...

People Are Stupid

I think by now, we can all agree that the general public are stupid when it comes to laundry. It does no good to bitch and kvetch about it, as it won't change anything!
It doesn't help that the Government Is stupid and forces the appliance companies to comply with their stupidity. And most of all the general public can be led like sheep to slaughter.
