Very nice Hi-Fi set-Who is Dom Deluise?Used to have the VM TT from one of those--Played it thru a Scott Amp with an attenuator.Worked just fine!!So now I know what the console looked like that the VM TT went to-the TT was marked with a Curtis Mathes nametag.Also liked the stereo RR tape machine in the console-quite nice!With the reels on the bottom of the deck-may be a little hard to thread.

The photo of the RR unit in this console was put in upside down. I don't think the reels would be hard to thread at all. If only they put the photo in the ad properly.

The R-R in that unit is located underneath the tuner and pulls out from the cabinet just like the turntable. It essentially is laying flat. Like Allen mentioned, the picture in the listing is upside down. If anything, the inconvenience would be the bending over to load it and operate it.

Now I get it-so the tape machine should be shown laying flat pulled out in a drawer-like the TT.Yes,MUCH better.And you could do tape editing on a tape machine laying flat.

That "drawer at the floor" tape unit is fine for someone young and agile (meaning anyone younger than me) but for an oldster I'd have to get down on my knees to use it and then ring for the nurse to help me up. I'm at the stage of my life where the toilet and everything else needs to be higher.

Magnavox made a series of Imperial consoles with a tape recorder drawer like this one for sale in Sacramento. I'd love to find one in the contemporary cabinet style. This Mediterranean version is not something I like and at $800 they are dreaming.

PS...Rex, Dom DeLuise played, among other things, a sidekick to Burt Reynolds in many of his films...sophisticated stuff huh?

Yes,thats right-both the TT and tape machine are too close to the ground for us oldsters and tall people.You would have to use a milking stool if you used the deck for editing.A higher height is prefereable.Like standing or for sitting on a standard chair.
Thanks for telling me who Dom is-When celeberty names come up--the F-15's fly over my head!Guess I have to watch more Burt Reynolds and Dom shows.I can remember stats on all of the transmitters and other equipment-but star names--forget it!

Nice Magnavox Hi-Fi with tape deck--Guess the beast could date from the 60's or early 70's.Looked like a dealer disply TOL unit-like how it apperas to be unused-but alas---Caps in the electronics will no doubt need to be replaced.Esp if the unit wasn't used.Disuse is hard on electrolytic caps!

Imperial by Magnavox

The last monster pictured was not a standard catalog issue, it was not or seldom displayed in a showroom. It contained LITTLE or no plastics in the cabinetry. This unit indicates it was made after the 1970 model year. A gorgeous Contemporary and I think a Provincial style offered also. They exceeded the $1,300 range when new. It's been hinted in the Magnavox site that the days of the cheap console are over. I hope it isn't, even though I've reached the saturation point in my acquisitions. I will retain what I own now, I haven't seen any in the thrifts for at least two years now.

cheap consoles - still available ; many are flagrantly ugly as heck and cannot expect the higher dollar - as for the nicer units, the TOL or better MOL, maybe so -

Regarding seeing them in the thrifts- there was a solid WALNUT Morse(?) unit for $149 at Goodwill, which later was marked down to $99 and with a senior discount that's reasonable for $80. It looked like the one I attached here, but it isn't the one I saw - just very similar to this one.

Of course you know our mutual friend Michael in Tennessee has/had 3 or 4 of those big Magnavox Imperials including the Mediterranean model in the dark finish pictured above and a lighter finish too. I know he sold many of the consoles in his collection (he had over 40 at one time) to the Magnavox Museum near him. He's sort of changed channels and is now into high-tech sewing machines...hardly as much fun.

But for your $750 you the seller doesn't know if the thing works-very nice-but for $750 we should know if it works-otherwise----Don't know WHAT to offer for it.Why doesn't he try it????If not at least have an expert look at it.If I have to pay 750 bucks for something--the something should work perfectly.

1960 Blaupunkt Console

I have a 1960 Blaupunkt Console (Short-lived Boston model) which I've loved since I was 3 years old. German, beautiful workmanship, and its still operational.

It has a layout that I can deal with: Radio in a tip-out drawer, phonograph under the top right lid, record storage/tape recorder pit under the left top lid.

I strongly suspect that the configuration seen in the original post (turntable and recorder in low-down drawers) was to keep the housewife happy, who wanted to use the radio as a credenza. With a "top loader" like my unit, you either are forced to constantly move stuff, or you keep nothing on top.

I like the German radios - during my childhood/teen years, the neighbor across the street, who was German, had a grand Grundig stereo. Workmanship and quality always impressed me - you could feel and see the difference compared to our USA built stereos. Not that we didn't create some nice ones.

Windsor...

I wonder if that advertised Windsor has the pricey Stephens field coil horn or the trio of paper speakers like mine. Although I hate to see any console sold as parts those field coil horns always sell for $2,000+ on ebay. A couple of years ago a very nice guy had a "almost" like-new Windsor for sale (dirt cheap) in San Luis Obispo, about 325 miles from me. He and his girlfriend wanted to visit Palm Springs so they loaded it in his van and delivered to to me...free! It's another one of those "projects" covered up in my garage. You don't see very many Windsors for sale anymore, especially with the TV/hutch.[this post was last edited: 5/29/2014-23:31]

1947 Magnavox Windsor

I've seen this advertised before. This has the "tweeter trio" instead of the valuable field coil horn. I don't like the way the Webster-Chicago 78 changer has been replaced. Seperate optional FM tuner and no doors over speaker mean it's prior to 1948. The "naughty" pine Drexel cabinet is unusual. $175 in Sacramento.
