cheap consoles...
are still around. It's largely a matter of space. Not many want such behemoths in their house these days. In the last 3 months we've picked up a $25 1961 Maganvox at a Re-Cycle store and a free Sears-Silvertone of similar age right off the curb, both all tube units (only kind that we play with). Their size and bulk, and the fact that most consoles will need work, make them of rather limited appeal. Vintage components by respected makers are a convenient size and just continue to escalate in value, however, making one wish we'd hung onto some of the '50s and '60s Marantz and McIntosh tube stuff disposed of years ago.
