Photo For Archives, and a Plea:
I'm putting a photo up for the Archives, and I'd once again like to ask that people consider taking the moment to do that when they find neat stuff FS.
The reason is that some damn rare stuff turns up on CL and other online resources, and photos enrich our reference base. This range's photo is a perfect example - most '57-'58 GE 40-inchers are the TOL and near-TOL models like Liberators and Stratoliners. This range utilizes that same basic styling, but it's shorn of all the deluxe features, like Automatic Calrod, the second oven and the meat thermometer. That makes this a valuable photo for us to have here, particularly if someone can identify a model year, model name and model number.
So - just think about it, huh? There is no frustration in this hobby like coming to AW, using the Super Searchalator to hunt down something rare, and finding that there's discussion of a CL ad, but no photo that would give information on details. If someone buys a range with missing knobs or trim, for example, photos are the resource that can tell them exactly what to look for.[this post was last edited: 12/29/2013-16:44]

I didn't think about it and you're right. Just the past couple of days I've gone into the archives and wished the photos were there.

This range also has the smaller pushbutton burner controls... the more deluxe models had larger buttons that are back lit with a color indicating the burner temperature. These were such a futuristic design, I think of them as the Jetsons range!

It's something of a curiosity. As I've mentioned, it uses the same styling as the 1957 Liberator and Stratoliner models, but it's not pictured in the 1957 catalog material I have.
As Jeff (moparguy) pointed out, it does not use the "keyboard" controls of the 1957 TOL models, but uses standard pushbuttons instead. It's a single oven, too. There's no Automatic Calrod, and no griddle, nor any provision for one; the only "deluxe" feature on it is the presence of a second 8-inch burner.
If it were not for the second eight-inch burner, this range would be equivalent in features to the 1957 Model J-405 Speedster, shown below in a photo originally posted here by Ben (swestoyz).
If anyone knows the year, model number and model name, it would be great to have the info here for future reference.

It's 57/58 for sure...
I had the '58 GE Service manual but gave it to the buyer of my yellow '58 Stratoliner, it had the all the model numbers and names and descriptions of all a available models, some of the better ones had the fanciful/descriptive names, but the lesser ones didn't. The ones with the "Floating backsplasher" all did have names, and they were also plane related, if memory serves, like "Stewardess" or something like that iirc... should have made a copy of that and kept it.

I agree with Roger, it looks like a 57-58... I think that it was in 59 that they updated the dash to have a glass area over the clock/timer and oven controls.
I am also guessing that as a less deluxe model, that this probably does not have the chrome inner oven door.

If I had to make an intelligent guess I would say that this is a 1958 Speedster. This particular range does not appear in the 1957 brochures or service manual. I don't have the 1958 brochure. The basic console design follows the same design pattern as the 1957 Liberator & Stratoliner but the fact that it has only one oven, no meat thermometer and small control buttons would lead me to believe that this could be the 1958 redesign of the Speedster.
I finally got to checking my 1957 service manual, and this range does not show up. The less deluxe 40" models (J403 Stewardess, J405 Speedster, and J406 Mainliner) look like the picture that Sandy posted, though the Stewardess does not have the clock. The deluxe 40" models have the controls above the glass panel, like the stove that is for sale, but all have the larger lighted burner control switches ('tel-a-cook'). These stoves are the Stratoliner (deluxe single oven range) and Liberator (deluxe double oven range). So I think Mark's guess sounds logical... the less deluxe models moved to the new design backsplash/control panel, but continued to not have the larger lighted switches.
Sandy, to your point in another thread, all of the standard 40" ranges have the divided burners (two burners on each side, with large area in the center) and the deluxe models have the 'cluster top' with the burners clustered on the left side.

Flooring like that is Not Allowed today; everything has to be as bland as possible to avoid offending prospective customers. It is getting very difficult to find any decorative elements with an actual point of view.
It even extends to exteriors; everything today is painted a blah grey-beige color; very few people seem to want a barn-red or yellow or blue house nowadays.
Boring as Hell.

Just for the hell of it I went to this inflation calculator to see what the 1957 Speedster Range shown above for $369.95 would cost today. In 2014 dollars it would cost $3,068.47.
We look at those prices from all those years ago and may think how cheap things were. But we are looking at those prices while living in today's world. Our reference is skewed. We need to keep in mind people had to work as hard for what they had then as we do today. Difference was there were more jobs available for the middle class then. And many (most?) middle class families could live on one salary.

Re Speedster..
That range in various configurations was built thru the 70s making it one of if not the longest lasting range model ever, the first year had that eyeball clock, but after that it was pretty much the same for years and years.
