AHA!

Thanks for the info! I get the connection now.
I remember visiting ALDENs as a child. Our ALDENS store was creepy. Additionally, at North Halsted and Hawthorne in Chicago there is still a rooftop water tank with "ALDENS" emblazoned on it. Some old signage still remains.
Thanks!

I am from Pontiac,IL and we had a Gambles Store there where my mother bought here first automatic pair, the best automatic washer and dryer that they sold under the Coronado name. The washer had 16 cycles that were programed automatically. All you had to do was push the button that you wanted EX. number 1 was (Whites with bleach). Push the button with the number that you wanted and set the timer with the corresponding number and the wash was ready to go. Time and temp. were set that way. The washer cleaned very well with a deep overflow rinse;however, it shook violently during the spin cycle and finally shook itself to death in 1971. The washer lasted 8 years and the dryer 22. Have fun all. Gary

That may be the Chicago Aldens...

If the Aldens warehouse south of I290 is a multi-story building, that may be the one I went to as a child. I only have a little memory left, but to get to the "store" you had to walk up three flights of stairs! I cannot remember where in Chicago that was but I remember it as being "warehousy".
At each stair landing there was a sign that said something like "Three floors to good savings", "Two more floors to go!", "You're one floor away from the best buys in town" etc etc. We weren't completely amused.
I don't think Cicero at I290 is the best part of town nowadays... Thanks for the info.
