CR Test Results and Persil

Automatic Washer - The world's coolest Washing Machines, Dryers and Dishwashers

Help Support AutomaticWasher.org:

I just did my first load of whites with Persil Power Pearls, I am not impressed. I can't see that it did any better job than the Arm&Hammer Clean Burst liquid that I have been using. I bought it expressly for whites, sorry I wasted the $11.97+9.5% tax. I can only hope that continued use will render better results.

Eddie I'm sorry you didn't have good results with the Persil Power Pearls. I actually have great results. Last several loads I did of whites I used 1/2 dose of persil pearls and 1/2 dose powder tide with bleach, STPP, and 130 degrees..amazing results. Cheryl

I haven't tried Persil yet. In their defense, the top rated was the 2in1 liquid. The Power Pearls scored lower. But I use the Sears Ultra Plus and it scored even lower and I think it cleans amazingly well. lol

I just saw a bag of Ariel powder at Family Dollar. It smells wonderful…I may have to pick up a bag and try it!

I have been using both the Pearls and Original liquid since shortly after it hit the shelves, and I don't plan on using anything else anytime soon. I have found it to work far better than any other detergent I've used, and has a light, clean scent.

I'm picturing the P&G big guys sitting at a round table right now making plans for ** new improved TIDE** of course the scent will change again and probably not for the better. But in defense of P&G the powdered tide with bleach and powdered tide free and clear are very good performers at least IMO.

Impressive test results for the Pro Clean Liquid 2-in1 version! I'm still in the honeymoon phase with Tide's suds-killing Turbo line...but I'll be near a Walmart later today and may just pick up a bottle of Persil to test it out at home in very soft water.

I'll say this much: I'm impressed that Persil Pro Clean and two of Tide's detergents clean so well in cool (75 degrees) water. We would have considered that cold water a few years back. Looks like CR isn't even testing detergent in warm (90 degrees) water anymore.

100 degrees was considered the optimal temp for warm water for decades. That's considered 'hot' these days. Ah, how things change.

Note: Sorry if a similar post pops up. The one I typed moments ago seems to have vanished into the etherworld.

CR tested only the plain version of Tide Turbo, which scored the same in its non-Turbo version. I'm waiting to see how the top-end liquid Ultmate Stain Release does in its Turbo form. I haven't noticed a decrease in cleaning ability with the Turbo pods.

Having said that...I'm a little disappointed pods---especially Tide's---haven't improved enough to rival their liquid and powdered siblings. As is my tendency, I'm getting bored using the same format and have started to drift back toward liquids/powders. Still using Tide pods as the daily driver, but not exclusively.

I'm confused

When you look at their rating chart (I have a subscription and can view this), the cleaning ability appears to have been measured only for cold water. I see no rating of cleaning power in warm or hot water. Also, they appear to have compared Persil (presumably an HE product) with a non-HE Tide version. I wish it weren't apples and oranges.

No wonder the pearls scored lower if they used just cold water... But I'm happy that P&G finally have some competition! Usually the consumer wins when that happens. :)

Tide tests all detergents in 75 degree water because that is what 2014-2015 washers deliver when set to 'Warm'. Most new washers dumb-down 'Hot' water to around 100-105 degrees, as did my 2013 Frigidaire Immersion Care. Fortunately, my 2010 Frigidaire front-loader still delivers tap-temp hot water. This is why I wouldn't consider buying a washer without an internal heater anymore. At least you can get truly hot water using Allergy, Steam, or Sanitize options.

I have an online subscription for CR, as well. I like it well enough to keep renewing, but there's so much more they could offer. The detergent ratings are in two sections; one for HE and a very small one for traditional detergents. I'm pretty sure all the Tide and Persil products in the HE section are, indeed, HE.

Add my thanks to the list, Launderess, for providing everyone a link to CR's free section!

Scent

I purchased a small jug of the Persil Original liquid. I felt as though it did a good job cleaning, but the scent was way too strong. I know they offer a sensitive version, but that didn't smell pleasant either. Wish they offered a scent free version.

I just bought a small bottle of the 2in1 today and yes, the scent is VERY strong. I was getting a headache from my tshirt I washed today. LOL. The Fresh Scent was ok. I wonder if the powder is not as strong?

EA56

EA56 - Did you compare the persil to the arm and hammer with a heavily soiled load or a light load? Did you try the persil because you're unhappy with the arm and hammer? Sorry for all the questions. I am very curious about the arm and hammer detergent, but am afraid to try it due to lack of enzymes. Persil has five enzymes if I remember correctly, but when I tried it I wasn't "amazed". Just felt like it was as good as tide.

Letsgoblues- I used the Persil Power Pearls in a regular whites load for me. Nothing was excessively dirty. I always wash in hot water, my water heater is set to 130F. I couldn't really see a noticeable difference from the Arm&Hammer Clean Burst liquid that I normally use. I am happy with the Arm&Hammer, but due to the glowing reviews I read here I thought that maybe the Persill would be even better. I'll continue to use it on whites and see if the performance improves over time. In my opinion Arm&Hammer is pretty darn good, especially considering the price.

Started using the Persil Pearls, have not bought anything else since. Even on darks, wonderful. Love the smell of the laundry, especially whites after a load of Persil & some clorox. Tide fan for years, but they will be beat now. Got really tired of them with their "New & Improved" for so many years. Just could not leave anything alone. I mean, what cha want, open the lid and Viola, no clothes left in the washer after all the "New & Improved" disolved fabric!

Tide tests all detergents in 75 degree water because ...&#34

Now that is just sad.

On both of my European washing machines 80F/30C is heated "cold" water. Tap cold is 20F on the AEG and you just turn off all heating options for Miele.

All this cold and lukewarm washing especially with liquid detergents probably goes along way towards explaining the foul and mouldering incubators of slime and germs many washing machines have become.

75F is BELOW tap-cold in Texas summer (80F). So they put an icemaker in the machine to pull it DOWN? No less asinine.

95F is the temp at which skin goo (sebum) goes from semisolid (wax) to liquid. Below that it's impervious to surfactancy. Try this test. Put a candle in a bowl of any detergent, wait a week and see how much dissolves.

Coming to a bathroom near you, government-mandated 75F showers. If you like hard nipples you'll love it. Better than the masochistic cactus-pinpoint sprays they have already inflicted us with.

Next will be, you turn on the shower and only air comes out and blows the dust off you. Cleaning up where the dust goes is up to you, but you can't use water, we're using it all to grow rice in the California desert.

Funny...

How CR seems to jump on the newest thing and claim it's the greatest since sliced bread...

About 75* showers, I am surprised we haven't seen a device that would recirculate water from the floor of the shower back up to the shower head.

Picked up small jugs of Tide Ultra Stain Release Turbo and Persil 2-in-1 at the other evil empire yesterday. Glad to report the liquid Turbo kills suds with the same efficiency as its pod brandmate. It also sports a cap reminiscent of the scrubber cap in a 1960s Kenmore. The dosing lines inside it are easy to see, which is refreshing.

Those of you who commented on Persil's strong scent were not exaggerating. Boy howdy it is potent! It's more of a perfume/incense scent in contrast to the fruit/flower whiffs of US detergents. I was parsimonious with dosing (line 1) on a load of sheets. The scent was very strong upon opening the machine and still there after drying. It isn't objectionable, really; just assertive. Wouldn't choose to use it for loads of shirts/dress shorts---where the lingering scent wouldn't mix well with Aqua di Gio---but it's nice on bedding and bath linens. Sheets emerged blindingly white, so great job in that department.

It doesn't dispense with suds quite as efficiently as Tide's Turbo line in very soft water, but is far better with that task than standard P&G brands.

I have no doubt Persil 2-in-1 will do an excellent job on a load of highly-stained kitchen whites. Will give it that test later today.

Aside: Pardon the horrid, grainy photo. The latest update of iPhoto doesn't accept the old JPEG version on my 12-year old camera. I'm taking photos with an iPad 2 (great video, embarassingly bad photos) 'til a new camera is purchased.[this post was last edited: 6/7/2015-13:48]

Eugene, yesterday I had a mess with the persil 2 in 1, I used a traditional top loader, a full load of sheets and pillowcases and used up to line 2 on the persil cap, I had tons of foam, it took 5 rinses to resolve the problem in my water hog. Today I did a full load of colourds, used 3 tablespoons of the 2 in 1 and had great results. I think my problem with the sheets was a mixture of softer water, and my bedding is changed every 4 or 5 days so they were only lightly soiled as opposed to the colourds that were soiled much more.I recently received persil mega color perls, I was warned it was heavily scented, I dont think its overly scented at all, but the 2 in 1 from walmart is much much more scented.imo.
