False alarm I talked to the seller this morning and the machine is actually a Norge Wringer washer, the guy was really nice and was willing to sell it for much less than he was asking, so if anyone wants a wringer washer call him. So the elusive Norge Combo will still be very rare other than the one found on E bay last year that made its way to Iowa there are no others known to exist.

Here's the bigger issue - where the heck do people listing things on craigslist get the idea that a wringer washer is a 'washer-dryer'. It seems to be an upstate New York trend....

I thought we had experienced a similar listing for a wringer washer labeled a washer-dryer. Maybe if anyone listing a wringer had remembered Maytag's terminology of "roller water remover" they could have used that, but "dryer"? Never.

I thought the area code (413) looked familiar, then I saw the ad. It's in Belchertown in western MA. Surprized he didn't list it in Springfield MA instead of Albany NY.

I would guess that because the wringer is part of the water removal process, they consider it a "dryer" of sorts. Technically they'd be correct, as the wringer certainly does remove a lot of water, and 'drying something' means just that - removing the water. I'm not saying they're correct in their terminology....A lot of the 1950s and 1960s Kenmore literature I have refers to "spin dry" functions although the end result certainly does not leave typical laundry any kind of "dry" as we think of today.
You could stretch that and say that this then means that every wringer and automatic washer is a dryer then also, but some people look at things they don't understand well in often weird ways. These things just strike us more directly becaue we are so much more atune to the subject matter than most.

Am willing to bet even the most puny final spin on top loaders back in the day beat a wringer hands down. IIRC the best a wringer can manage extraction wise equals about 200rpms give or take.

When the first Bendix Automatic Home Laundry machine was tested, it was noted that its spin removed less water than a wringer. Bendix said a sufficient amount of water was retained in the load to enable bleaching by the sun when line dried which was more spinning than the machine did.

have not ever seen some of these machines operate, nor did their parents. John I do wish this had been "the one". When i am at my brothers in rural missouri, i snoop in barns and sheds as we visit, and the opportunity arises with folks especially the elderly that have lived in one place for many years. We will keep looking. It seems when i find another "Wringer" they kept them for rugs and dirty farm clothes. We all know that contemorary newspaper ads most always quote a price on a "new automatic" followed by the phrase "with trade in" alr
