Re:#

In ‘73 during the height of a gas rationing phase I saw a ‘55 Cadillac Coupe de Ville for sale at the Chevrolet dealer in Novato, Calif. while driving down hwy 101. I had a paid for ‘68 Volkswagen Bug a perfect car for those gas rationing days, but I just HAD to have that Cadillac! So the next day I got my pink slip for the VW and drove down to Novato and traded the paid for VW straight across for the ‘55 Cad de Ville which they wanted $995 for. It was light green with a cream color roof. The sale was “as is” except for the brakes because the pedal was kinda soft, so they wrote into the contract that they would fix the brakes, which they said they would do before I left, and I waited while they made the adjustment and the pedal seemed normal

The next day I drove it to work and when parking the car I ran over an empty whiskey bottle that someone had left in the gutter and that I hadn’t seen. Since I was parked on hill it didn’t seem safe to try and jack up the car and change the tire so I called AAA and had it towed to the Goodyear Tire dealer where I’d had work done before. I went to work and later on got a call from the owner of the Goodyear dealership. He told me the brakes were shot and it wasn’t safe to drive the Cad back to the Chevrolet dealer in Novato. He told me that since it was in the contract that they would repair the brakes, and they didn’t do it when they had the chance that I should call them and tell them that I was having the brakes repaired by Goodyear and tell them that it was illegal to sell a car with bad brakes and they were gonna have to reimburse me for the cost or I’d take them to Small Claims Court. They argued and I held firm and they paid for the $250 brake job!

I loved that Cadillac! What a luxury after driving a gutless, characterless VW! I drove that Cad for 8 mo before it started to nickel and dime me to death and then traded it for a more sensible ‘74 Chevrolet Nova with a 250 6 cyl and a 3 speed in the floor console. It was Lemon yellow, which turned out to prophetic, because if there ever was a lemon that Nova was one! How I missed that ‘55 Cad. The dealer that I bought the Nova from was also a Cadillac dealer and the owners son got my ‘55 Cad which his daddy’s dealership was able to restore for him for free. I broke my heart to see him drive that coupe deVille all around Petaluma. But at least I had my fun with it for 8 mo.
