Dame Edna, also known as Dame Edna Everage, is a character portrayed by Australian actor Barry Humphries. Dame Edna is not, in the usual sense of the phrase, a drag act; she is a fully-rounded character with no connection to the rest of Humphries' life (he's straight, married several times, four kids). When asked, Dame Edna denies that she has anything to do with Humphries, calling him her manager. Dame Edna is not so much a comedy act as she is an alter ego of Humphries'.

She is outrageous, a caricature of a certain kind of woman who has reached a certain age oblivious to reality or changing times. She says exactly what she thinks, only more often. She is wildly popular on three continents; Australian, British and American audiences flock to her appearances. If you listen to her during her appearances, she has quite a history.

I liked Robin Williams' line about Sarah Palin better.. He claims he first met her in Alaska, she was breastfeeding and skeet shooting at the time. LOL

I thought Dame Edna looked great tonight. She must have been getting dirty looks from someone in the audience toward the end, she started glaring and going after the person, and Jay/his producer cut her off pretty quick. Good thing. Considering Jay's usual Hitler Youth audience, things would have gotten nasty very quick.

BTW did anyone find Jay's collection of 911 calls and police arrest videos funny? Good lord. Let's make fun of senior citizen medical emergencies and people's Miranda rights? Yeah Jay, we all know you're a freaking right-wing fascist shill, but now you're really scraping the barrel. Just pathetic.

Dame Edna,

I saw her in Boston a few years ago. Absolutely hysterical; however, if you don't want to be picked on to do a skit with her, or be made fun of, don't sit in the front rows. There was a young women, who picked on her and she walked out of the audience ... it looked like she et a few lemons beforehand ... talk about a pickle-puss ...

I thought she was pretty good last night but did sense that the typical Leno audience wasn't sure what to make of her. Jeff, you sized up the Leno demographic perfectly. I'll be so glad when he's gone and a more with-it Conan replaces him.

Sorry I missed Dame Edna

My local station pre-empted the show. Ike was on his way into Galveston! We had local flooding again due to the storm surge here almost as bad as Rita just not as forceful. Fortunately many homes have been raised by most that have chosen to stay in the communities that flooded again.
