DD Kenmore water drains/refills

I was searching through my local craigslist postings last night and found a 20$ DD Kenmore with the following description:

 

"<span style="font-family: 'Times New Roman'; font-size: medium; font-weight: normal;">It was working fine then it just starts cycling the water it brings in and it goes right back out probably an easy fix I don't know I'm asking $20.00 obo"</span>

 

Based off of this description I immediately thought that the drain hose is too low.  On a direct drive machine what could some other possibilities be, if any?

That sounds kind of limited to me, that's all I could think the problem is too.

Direct-drive can't drain unless the motor runs in reverse for spin ... or by siphoning.

But it "was working fine". (?) What turns the pump on and off in a DD?

You know, I was reading that again, and now to me it sounds like maybe it is spray rinsing and he's not familiar with it?

That sounds pretty stupid I know, but I cant really think of anything else.

The pump mounts directly to the motor so it runs *all the time* that the motor is running. Agitate direction, it forces water back into the tub. Spin direction, the machine drains.

I took it as

that the only the machine will do is fill and drain over and over again?  He states that the washer does not leak but that it did agitate and spin but that all it will do now is cycle the water.

Now that to me almost sounds like a lid switch problem. On newer DD washers, it will not spin nor agitate if it is not engaged, it will fill though.

For the price, Joseph is going to find out, right Joseph? Its a $20 learning tool and a short weekend escapade. That's how I'd see it if I wanted the washer.

The seller is not sure of his work schedule tomorrow but assures me he will txt me back when he finds out.   It is located in Beebe and is about a 45 minute drive from Little Rock.

Yeah.....this sounds like the familiar PermPress cycle issue most people don't figure in when installing a machine....sometimes they intall the drain hose in too far into the standpipe, for a Normal wash cycle, no real effect.....but when you go into the PP "cool down"....when a partial drain happens, and then the machine pauses and tries to refill, a siphon has been created, and one or the other can't catch up.....so it keeps filling......but gets no where.....I have gotten a few machines because of this...not a bad thing from my side of it!....

and his may have happened with this machine......runs fine, no issues, until someone uses the PP cycle......

would be interesting to find out what really happened.....keep us posted

The seller says, "asking $20", so maybe he'll take less for his science experiment? It's not like it's in pristine condition.
Might want to ask him if he recently moved the machine or installed it in a new house. If he did, might be that siphon issue mentioned above.

For $20, I'd be tempted to pick it up just to see if I could figure out what's wrong...
