1982 Kenmore DD MOL washer (if the serial number still has the year in the first 2 digits)

Washer does not get up to speed in spin. Coupler is fine. Washer does try to spin during drain. You can hear the different speeds in the motor if you choose spin in the normal cycle or delicate cycle, so I assume the motor is fine (agitation speeds are fine).

With these symptoms, can the transmission be assumed ok and the clutch the problem?

Worth replacing the clutch? How difficult of a job?
 
Does sound like a clutch or possibly dragging brake problem
-also check that the tub is not loose(top of tub post rusted
away)as that is the problem with my '93 24"DD,as that machine
is sitting apart right now,i will have a look at it too see
what clutch or brake problems could be possible...
DDs are very easy to work on and an'82,first year DD is a bit
of a classic-i'd say it's well worth repair.
 
I had a DD from a lady complaining spin was too slow, not clutch, tranny, coupler, or motor........

there was a small baby sock lodged between the inner and outter tub near the top back area hidden from sight, but caused one heck of a puzzle till I figured it out

after removal, ran fine after that....and to think she tossed it out and bought a new one, can you say overload?

The problem you describe is most likely a slipping clutch the early DDs did not have many clutch problems. I drought your reading the serial # properly if its C820----- it would be made in 1988 the 20th week. Late 1980s DDs were good washers and if its in pretty good shape may be worth a new clutch just make sure there isn't a lot of oil spraying out of the top transmission seal in which case it may also need a rebuilt transmission.

No spraying oil, relatively clean under there. Can turn the tub by turning the coupler by hand. This makes me think there is nothing between the inner and outer tub -- except the thick layer of Downy mold.

Can you recommend the part number?
 
Replace the clutch in it today. OMG, it was a piece of cake. These things are so easy to work on, they should never end up in the crusher pile. Anyone can do it! The whole thing took about 10 minutes. It took longer to disconnect and reconnect the water supply hoses than to actually do the repair.

BTW, there was a 6 pad clutch in the machine, but the replacement was the 3 pad clutch. The shop had these in stock. They never heard of the 6 pad clutch and didn't find the part number. I decided not to wait for them to order one and went with the instock 3 pad...

I will get the model and serial number, but it still spin drains. The timer does stop the motor for the obligatory 3 seconds after the drain increment. If this early model (1982) was supposed to spin-drain, why would the 3 second pause be in there? Or is there something wrong with the transmission that does this?

Is there a youtube video on clutch tranny repair? I have two that need new trannys and I am not sure how to begin.
